Would a laptop using wireless connection off my router dramatically slow down my internet speed? (More info..)

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!
A family member just got a new laptop. I recently got a router hooked up to my DSL to share net with another desktop PC in the house, and my connection was fine. But as soon as this laptop goes on, it seems like some programs go dramatically slower. When I use certain multiplayer online games now, I lag a LOT. I’m not sure if it’s just the servers, or if this was induced by the laptop. Do laptops use more bandwidth than desktops when using the internet? If so, why? And is there a way I can test specifically if this laptop is slowing me down, like some online test I can run? I’m not sure if it’s my imagination, but since this laptop got hooked up it seems like everything I go on is really slow.
The laptop will only slow you down if it is consuming bandwidth capacity by having a download open or streaming video.
it should barely affect it. if the laptop is downloading something that is set to use unlimited bandwdth, it may slow it down for the desktop to speed up the download on the laptop. regular internet browsing should not affect it at all.
ya!definitely……..but specially when u compare ur download speed of ur wireless network to any other modem ones,u will find that ur speed for example of a 256kbps net can be compared to a 64kbps download speed……..!
If the internet is affected that much I would be concerned with viruses, it just takes 1 bad email to infect a computer.
You can check for virus for free using Symantec (aka Norton) Free AntiVirus Checker online at http://security.symantec.com/
Another option would be programs like Kazaa, Torrents, BearShare (or any other filesharing program) which are internet hogs and usually stay hidden can easily suck up bandwidth.
Another worry would be is if you have not secured your wireless networks your neighbors could be using your wireless internet without your knowledge.
An easy way to tell is to logon to your desktop, and then login to your router, depending on your router model, you will have logging tools to see who is using the internet. I have a linksys, after logging in, I click Administration on the top, then click Log, then click on Outgoing log, then just keep clicking Refresh and you will see who is using the most internet.
The laptop might have a ton of little utilities that ping different servers for various things like updates, Remote support services, etc… Many laptops come preloaded with garbage and trial-ware unless you purchase a business model. Try to ID and uninstall any extra programs running on the laptop. Two computers should not max out a router. Make sure you have encryption turned on to minimized the possibility that other people are not using your wireless connection.
