What programs can be fully run from an external harddrive or thumbdrive?

Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!
Now that I know my wife’s laptop’s harddrive is failing, I would like to test the rest of the system to see if it’s salvagable. I need to run some relatively complex programs (like say explorer, firefox, MS office, etc.) from an external source, like an external harddrive or thumbdrive. however, all the ones i have require extensive .dll’s or local harddrive access. what programs could I use?

Open Office will. This is a free office Program that has the same as Word and Excel. This will run off your USB stick. and can be free downloaded from http://www.openoffice.org/
the best part is it is free.
