SAT Test Day: the Night Before and Morning of

My students often ask me for last minute advice on what to do the night before the exam and the morning of the exam. Here’s what I tell them:

After dinner, collect the things you’ll need on test day:

1) Your SAT Admission Ticket

2) Your Student ID or Driver’s License

3) Several #2 Pencils (with good erasers!)

4) Calculator

5) Watch or other timepiece

6) A good snack! (the test is very long; you will need a snack)

You may also want to decide what clothes you’re going to wear on test day. Remember to dress in layers, because you can’t control the temperature. The SAT test room will most likely be either warmer or too colder than you would prefer.

After you have collected your things, be sure to relax! Watch a movie, talk to a friend on the phone, or go out for a walk. Do something to take your mind off the test.

Here’s my advice on bedtime: if you’re in the habit of going to bed around 11 o’clock, don’t go to bed at 8 o’clock the night before the SAT test. If you’re anything like me, you’re going to wind up starring at the ceiling for hours feeling frustrated. Rather, you should aim to go to bed about 1 hour before you normally would on a school night. Also, remember to set you alarm early enough so that you comfortably have time to get ready for the exam. You don’t want to create a time pressure situation for yourself. There’s going to be enough pressure during the actual SAT exam.

The Final Step:

In the morning, you should remember to Check Your Brain!

After breakfast, take out a test prep book and do the first two questions of each of the three sections. After a few easy math, writing, and sentence completion problems, you’ll realize your brain is still working and everything is going to be OK. Don’t check the answers….just do the problems. I don’t think the first problems you do on test day should be the real ones on the SAT exam.

Hopefully this advice will help you maximize your SAT test score. Good luck, and remember to stay positive!

PostHeaderIcon Vocabulary Prep for the SAT Test

Vocabulary Prep for the SAT Test

Picture yourself a teenager, at home one night with a ton of homework to do. It’s late you just had dinner, you’re feeling tired, you’ve had a rough afternoon, and now you’ve got a bunch of homework to do. You grab your history book and you start reading and you got like five pages to read, you’re blowing through the text, and you come across a word that you’ve never seen before. What do you do?

What you’re supposed to do and what you’ve been taught to do since childhood is put your book down, pick up your dictionary and look up that word, maybe write a little note for yourself after you’ve learned the definition, understand the word and context, understand the passage a little bit better as a whole, and cruise on through your homework that night.

Let me guess that that’s probably not what you would really do if put in that situation. If you’re anything like I was when I was a kid, what you do is you would just skip the word and keep moving. I think the reasoning that you might use to justify that is this:

You say to yourself I’m seventeen years old, I’m a pretty well functioning young adult, I have a driver’s license, I’ve been out, I’ve traveled, I’ve gone to dinner with friends, and I’ve done a bunch of stuff. I’ve never seen this word before so how important could it possibly be? Again, I function well in society, this is a word that is probably some remote obscure history word that I’m never going to hear again for the rest of my life anyway; I’m not going to bother stopping to look this word up and even if I did have the time, it doesn’t make any kind of sense.

Let me tell you something, on a certain level I agree with you 100% because I used to do the same thing. At times when you truly are under a lot of time pressure, it may not actually make sense to stop and look up a word. You’re going to slow yourself down and you’re not going to get to all your homework. If you fall into that thinking of often skipping words because you don’t feel like taking the time because you feel like you’re smart enough and you’ve never seen this word and it’s not that important, you’re like me but do me a favor – ultimately you’re going to struggle on a test like the SAT without a really good vocabulary. You’re going to struggle like I did when I was younger. If you fall into this category, do me a favor – watch part 2 on this series of vocabulary and I want to slowly start to change your mind.

Good Attitude and Test Preparation Services Help You Score Higher on SATs and GMATs

There are many ways you can get ready for the SAT or GMAT exam – you can invest in test preparation services including classes and online software, you can hire a tutor and you can buy books and flashcards.  These are all great GMAT and SAT prep tools.  But without a good attitude, no GMAT practice test or SAT class is going to get you the best score that you can possibly get.  In order to ace these challenging exams, it is necessary to avoid stress and look at the road to test day as preparation for your favorite sport or game.

There are many reasons why it’s good to look at your GMAT or SAT prep as the preparation for some sort of sporting event, chess tournament or other competitive endeavor.  No one would enjoy playing a game or sport against a team of 4th graders because they’d always win.  When you look at the test as a challenge that you score points with, then it also helps to keep your spirits up when you miss some questions.  You don’t score in every single play, and you probably won’t get 100% of the questions correct.

When you think of every SAT or GMAT practice test and study sessions as training for your sporting event or tournament, it can help to boost your attitude and keep you on the right track.  And once you get to test day, think of it as game day or race day – this is what all your hard work has been culminating up to.  So get plenty of rest the night before the test, eat breakfast with extra protein and grain, avoid sweets like donuts and drink lots of water.  This is just as important as any of the test preparation services that you should have also invested in, because if you’re sleepy, hungry or dehydrated, your attitude will go right down the drain.

If attitude damage occurs on test day, then chances are your test score will suffer.  So keep your spirits up from the first day of studying to the last day of the SAT or GMAT exam.

Get a Better Understanding of the SAT Test

The SAT test is one of the most important tests a high school student will ever take. It is a large determinant of what college the student will get in to and a respected scale of one’s intelligence and college readiness. Colleges like the SAT because it is a standardized test; individual subject grades are not as weighted due to the fact that different schools have dissimilar grading scales. The SAT will be the same wherever you take it, whether you are in Maryland or California.

SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test, and was designed to be a measure of one’s readiness for college. The SAT-I, or Reasoning Test, has a reading, writing, and mathematics section. The reading part comprises comprehension, critical reading, and sentence completion. The majority of the writing section is an essay, which must be completed in twenty five minutes. It also includes word choice, word usage, and a variety of grammar questions. Statistics, number operations, geometry, probability, and algebra are all included in the SAT. Fortunately for many test takers, the SAT does not include trigonometry, although that topic is part of another formal test, the ACT.

Each section of the SAT is worth 800 points, meaning the top score for the entire test is 2400 points. Each section is scored on a scale of 200-800, so the minimum score is 600, not zero. Some colleges do not take into account the writing section, and instead focus solely on the reading and math sections. In this case, the traditional 1600 point scale is utilized. It is only a matter of time before all colleges and universities acknowledge the writing section and the 2400 point scale becomes permanently widespread.

The organizational structure of the SAT is designed to prevent any cheating and make the test flow more smoothly. Everybody starts out with the 25-minute essay, and ends with another writing segment, which lasts 10 minutes. All of the sections in between, however, appear in a mixed order for different people. For example, while one person is answering reading questions, another might be on the math section. Most of the individual questions are the same on every test, as developing separate questions for every test taker would be highly inefficient (SAT designers have enough work making new questions every year).

Signing up for the SAT can be done online or through the mail. Most people nowadays do it online, as doing so expedites the process of registering. One can register online and after taking the test they can go back to the website and view their scores. It usually takes about two and a half weeks for score reports to be available on the site. About a month and a half after the test, scores are mailed out as well, so if one does not check online, they will still get their scores.

Currently, the basic fee for taking the SAT is forty five dollars. You can also opt to purchase additional services, such as being sent a list of questions and answers (which you would receive post-test, of course), or a comprehensive SAT study book. There is even an option to purchase just the answers, although why one would do that is questionable, as answers are useless without questions.

Register for your SAT Test and make sure you are prepared by taking SAT Classes.

PostHeaderIcon The Sat Test Day: What To Expect?

sat scores
by avlxyz

The Sat Test Day: What To Expect?

In my previous articles, I have talked at length about the SAT test, and various strategies to attack the so called ‘difficult’ questions. Assuming that you have spent a few months preparing for this exam, let us talk about the test day, and try to answer the question “what to expect on the D-day”.

Here is the situation you will find yourself in the day you have to write the SAT. Carrying your registration details and two ID forms you will enter the pre-designated SAT test center. Be prepared to be patient as you will have to wait in line before you make your way into the testing center. Roughly, it would take ten minutes or more to enter the exam room. Once you reach the room, the proctor would show you your designated seat. While your heartbeats would be going crazy, you would see other students entering the room.

As soon as the test begins, the proctor would read out the instructions laid down by the College Board. Following this, the supervisor would distribute testing materials, and also check whether the students have their pencils. The calculator would also be checked to ensure they meet the standards of the College Board. Upon the completion of all these formalities, you would be asked to fill in your personal details in the bubble sheet.

Here is what the SAT test would look like:

Section One: Essay – 25 Minutes

Sections Two - Nine: Math, Reading, or Writing – 20 or 25 Minutes

Section Ten: Writing – 10 Minutes

Surprisingly, the SAT varies its testing format and length. However, the essay would ALWAYS appear first and writing section would come last. Breaks and pauses would be given during the test.

Obviously, you are not allowed to solicit help from other students, or even talk to them. Use of communication devices like cell phones is strictly prohibited. Once the test is over, you would have to hand over the paper to the proctor.

The following tips would help you analyze what to do, and what not to do on the test day.

Do Sleep properly

…not on the test day!!! Ensure that you get proper sleep the night before the test day. According to doctors, you should sleep for at least 8 hours. The dinner you eat before going to bed should be light and healthy. Make sure you do not eat junk food as dinner. Intake of high protein meals is not recommended, as this might tire you on the test day.

Do carry your Calculator

A graphic calculator can sometimes make lengthy solutions in a few seconds; hence, it is advisable to bring it to the test center. A watch (that does not produce irritating beeps) is also recommended.

Do drink water & glucose

Glucose can instantly give you energy. Having a glass of glucose with water would certainly help.

Eat a light, nutritious breakfast

The breakfast on the SAT test day should contain a portion of fresh fruits. Do not look for donuts and pastry on the test day.

Observe silence in the exam hall, and mind your own business. Concentrate on the test, answer easy questions first, do not panic if you come across a difficult problem, and fill in the choices in the answer sheet correctly. Doing all these, in addition to your hard work that you put in for SAT test preparation, would help you fetch high SAT scores, and thus get you a seat in one of the most sough after colleges in the country!

The Author brings over 6 years of e-learning and online tutoring experience. Test Preparation Services For Sat And Gmat

Whether you are preparing for the GMAT, the SAT or any other important exam, test preparation services are one of the best investments you can make. With extra help from live courses, study guides, books, flashcards and software programs, you are assured a higher score than if you had simply tried to study and prepare on your own. For high school seniors, SAT prep courses can make all the difference in getting a higher score and getting into the best schools. For college grads and current undergrads looking to go into MBA programs, taking a GMAT practice test can make all the difference on the actual exam day. With so many resources available, it’s hard to believe that some people might try to take the SAT or GMAT without any assistance of this nature. Future GMAT takers, for example, can access GRE practice test questions, sample tests, sample timed tests, randomized question practice, score/progress tracking, video feedback and articles with test taking tips, insights and strategies written by industry professionals. And with comprehensive software, these tools and tips can be accessed over the Internet so the studier doesn’t have to take time out of their busy schedule to attend actual test prep courses. SAT prep services include online courses, test preparation study guides and products such as books, flashcards and CDs. Many students that scored highest on the SAT used these types of study tools, and getting a higher score on this exam can make a big difference when applying for colleges and universities around the country. Some schools won’t even look at an application if the SAT score is too low. The value of test preparation services should be obvious, but many people fear that they can’t afford to attend expensive courses. Luckily there is online coursework that is just as effective in preparing you for test day at a much lower cost. It would be unwise to sign up for these types of exams without it.

Get Into That Dream School with a Great SAT Test Preparation Course

Most colleges and universities in the United States accept the SAT as a primary means of evaluating an applicant’s potential. Performance on this particular test also influences universities’ decisions regarding the conferral of merit-based scholarships or fellowships. In short, the SAT is one of the most important tests of a high school student’s life. As a result, SAT preparation is crucial for success in the college application process. Without a decent score, an applicant can forget about getting into his or her dream school. That is why SAT test preparation is so important. Without the guidance of a good SAT prep course, a student has a greater chance of doing poorly. Because of a poor score, the student might not get a scholarship, which could help him pay for a large portion of his education. These scholarships are becoming more crucial to students as higher education expenses continue to rise. Many SAT test preparation courses are available, but a student must take great care in choosing one that has earned an excellent reputation. Sometimes, spending a few extra dollars for a great course can mean the difference of several hundred points on a student’s SAT score. Students who want to earn a degree from one of the country’s best colleges or universities should make sure that they take an SAT prep course. The right SAT course gives students a greater sense of what to expect on the big day of the test. Ultimately, practicing for that very important test through some means of SAT preparation helps boost students’ confidence levels and test performance. Overall, taking a preparation course prevents students from getting blindsided on the day of the test. Instead of entering a testing center with no idea as to what the test structure is like, students with a great deal of test preparation will score higher than those who did not prepare. As a result, students who take a prep course for the SAT are much more likely to achieve their ultimate goal: earning a degree from the school of their dreams.
