Start Your GMAT Test Prep Early and Study Consistently

When it comes to GMAT test prep, the key is to be consistent and start early. The same applies to any challenging and daunting test, such as the SAT or the GRE. Many people choose to take a GMAT preparation course, although some busy working adults don’t have the time in their busy schedule to take such a course. This is why online courses are so beneficial. If you get started with your GMAT or SAT online course as soon as possible and study consistently in the months and weeks leading up to the test, you have a good chance of scoring high. There are many tools that you can use once you sign up for a good GMAT preparation course. One of the most helpful tools is the practice test, which is typically timed to simulate the actual experience of test day as closely as possible. Once you get started with your GMAT or SAT online course, you will want to go through as much of the material as you can before you begin taking these practice tests, especially if you have been out of school for a while. After reviewing the basics of what to expect on the exam, then you can begin taking practice tests and see what areas you need to focus on, which you will have plenty of time to do if you started early. Consistency will help you make the most of your GMAT test preparation, and the best way to ensure this is to create a study plan with attainable goals for each week. If you can consistently study for a set amount of time each day, or as close to every day as possible, then you can reach each goal and move on to the next. By the end of this preparation cycle you should be able to finish the practice tests with great improvements in all the areas you were weaker in. But it will only work if you start early and study consistently.

Timing is One of the Most Important Aspects of GMAT Test Prep

When it comes to GMAT test prep, everyone has different tips and tricks that they say will work best as you get ready for this important exam.  Many people suggest taking an online GMAT preparation course, and there are many other tools such as personal tutoring, books, CDs, software, flashcards and practice tests that round out the experience.  What they often neglect to mention, however, is how important it is to prepare for taking the test itself, regardless of the material that is on it.

The GMAT is a timed test with three different sections, similar to the SAT but geared towards graduates who are applying to MBA programs at leading business schools and universities.  As you get started with your GMAT or SAT online course, you will undoubtedly learn all about the material that will likely be covered in the math, verbal and writing sections of the test.  But unfortunately, many students neglect the principles of smart time use during their GMAT test prep, which can result in careless mistakes or running out of time.  Learning how to manage your time is one of the most important tricks to acing the Graduate Management Admission Test.

While taking a GMAT preparation course or following an online test prep program, it is crucial that you learn how to manage your time and know what to expect during the actual timed test.  One trick that some people think will work is checking the clock after every question, but this can actually have a counterproductive effect.  Your attention should be focused on the calculations and careful reading of the questions instead of being occupied by the clock.  This is why the best trick is actually to adopt a staggered timing strategy.  An ideal strategy is to only check the timer once after every 10 questions at most.

So if you’re preparing for the GMAT, it’s important to get an idea of what the test will be like and whether you are prepared to finish all the questions in the time allotted.  Timing truly is one of the most important aspects of GMAT test prep.

ACT TEST Prep

Edit Article |

Posted: Oct 05, 2010 |Comments: 0

|

Share

]]>

The ACT test assesses high school students’ general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. ACT scores are one of the most important factors in the college admission decision, second only to grades in college prep courses.

This is a high stakes test. How will you prepare for this important test?

The ACT has 4 components: English Language, Mathematics, Critical Reading and Science. The SAT exam has 3 components: Math, Critical Reading and Writing. the ACT tests grammar, punctuation and syntax versus the SAT is focused on vocabulary . The Writing Test, an optional component, measures skill in planning and writing a short essay. The SAT does not test you on science and trigonometry. The ACT lasts 2 hours, 55 minutes with 30 minutes for the optional writing.

So which test do you want to take? By taking a predictive test PSAT and PLAN in your sophomore year you can somewhat predict your scores for either the ACT or the SAT.

We can work with your son or daughter one-on-one with a commitment to their success.

From your past experiences in taking tests, determine what the weak areas are and work on those. By seeking out teachers or counselors you can ask for advice on how to improve in those areas. Take sample tests, evaluate the results and keep testing and reevaluating.

A review of the weaker area(s) of concern can help with the content of the ACT, such as vocabulary words or brushing up on geometry, trig, or algebra problems.

Because the science section will measure your reasoning, it is the easiest section of the ACT. It will be important to know how to read scientific data in charts, graphs or reports.

Each of the four multiple-choice ACT test sections (English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science) is scored on a scale of 1-36. You will also receive a composite score, which is the average of your four test scores (1-36). When you receive your score report results, it will include national rankings where you can compare your performance against students across the country. For instance, if you ranked in the 95th percentile on the Mathematics Test, you did better than 94% of other students, while 5% did tested than you.

You will receive a Writing Test sub score and a Combined English/Writing score. Essays are judged for quality not quantity with a sub score of 0-12 and a combined English/Writing score of 1-36. The Ivy League universities will look at your essay, while other universities may not consider this as important for their admissions requirements. On the ACT web site you can search for writing test requirements by school. As you decide on your choices of possible universities, based on your scores, you should check with each school to understand how they make decisions about your writing score.

So, should you take a ACT online or classroom course? It can be costly in both time and money. However, practice sessions, taking sample tests, review of weaker areas of concern and tracking of your scores during this class is helpful.

You can also get good results with a disciplined approach, perhaps a one-on-one tutor and a good ACT guide book. If you chose a one-on-one tutor, they should help you in the ACT content areas, as well as, strategies how to take the test. You will need to know content, as well as, methods or processes for math problems and reading. Feedback is essential to avoid making the same errors and to know why you may have missed an understanding of a subject area.

How Students Can Manage Their Time and Study Habits to Improve Their Grades

Who doesn’t have time management problems? I think we all do to some degree. If you’re a student, you may seem to have more difficulty with this than others because you have so many things going on in addition to your school work. Nobody can slow time down, and we always need more of it. You can gain control over your time by planning, and making choices about, how you will spend your time, and how much time will be spent on each activity and school subject area.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice test, that is used by most U.S. colleges and universities for admissions into undergraduate/bachelor’s programs, placement decisions and sometimes as a measure of eligibility for scholarship.  It is used primarily in the US but also in the United Kingdom and Singapore.

In India the test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the months of October, November, December, January, May and June (6 times every year).

The SAT has ten sections. This is divided as under –
Section 1 – always a twenty five minutes essay
Section 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 – 25 minutes each
Sections 8 and 9 – 20 minutes each
Section 10 – always a ten minute section of multiple-choice questions.
While the format for the first and the last section is defined, sections 2 through nine vary and deal with mathematics, critical reading, and writing in no particular order. In fact, adjacent test takers might have test books which are entirely different in the order of their content.

It is a 3 hours and 45 minutes exam. The weightage for different subjects is as under –

Writing: 200-800
Mathematics: 200-800
Critical Reading: 200-800
Total marks are 2400. It is a 3:45 hrs exam. With breaks, the test takes over 4 hours to administer.

There is also a non scoring section of 25 minutes. This section is a common practice of test development and is used to ensure validity and fairness. It can be from one of three areas mentioned above or multiple choice and is mainly used to test run future editions of the SAT.

On the face of it, SAT seems like a test of one’s verbal and mathematical knowledge. However, it is more about performing under pressure of an examination environment and needs an effective combination of high accuracy and good speed. This is an acquired skill and takes much more than learning the syllabus till class ten. It needs focused and informed practice and the use of strategies and techniques to build accuracy and speed.

The SAT is based on fundamental knowledge of school syllabus till the 10th Standard and tests the following three areas -

Writing
Critical Reading
Mathematics

SAT and ACT Test Scores Are Important Criteria For College Admissions and Scholarships

Students will be taking the most important tests in their high school career sometime in the next few months. SAT and ACT scores are among the top three criteria for college admissions at the majority of schools. When students do well on these tests, it can greatly improve their college opportunities and chances for scholarships. It is much easier to improve a student’s test scores than it is to improve their GPA. These tests are coachable and when students learn the necessary strategies and gain some invaluable practice, they can increase their scores.

With this in mind, wouldn’t it make sense for high school juniors to prepare for these tests before they take them for the first time? Too often students think that test prep is something that is not necessary. They feel they can do whatever test prep they need on their own. Most, however, do not take the time or have the discipline to do enough to make a difference. Recent studies show that earlier critics now agree that test prep works and can make a difference in a student’s performance. Even the College Board and ACT, publishers of the two tests, provide test prep materials for students to purchase. Test prep has become a big business, but you can help your student prepare for these tests by finding affordable and effective courses or tutoring.

Many parents listen to college representatives who tell them that they look at each college applicant in a “holistic manner” and that test scores are not a big deal. However, research shows that more than 70% of colleges and universities consider SAT and ACT test scores a significant factor in college admissions. Too many students are rejected from colleges because of low test scores. Many lose out on merit scholarships because their test scores are not high enough.

Students often find the SAT and ACT tests intimidating. They seem very unlike anything they have studied in school. In addition, the tests are timed and the race to finish each section can be very frustrating. Students need to become familiar with the tests and gain practice on the types of questions that are asked. They must learn to work within the allotted time frame and find out which questions they should tackle or skip depending upon the section and their strengths and weaknesses. Students need to practice, review, and practice some more to gain confidence in their test-taking abilities. They also need to find ways to cope with the stress that accompanies these tests and can adversely affect their test scores.

Parents should look into their test prep options early and decide which is best for their high school junior. There are good test prep courses and tutoring available in your community that are not expensive and do not require five or six hours a week of a student’s participation. A course should have no more than twelve students and the teacher should be an experienced test prep coach, not just someone who has scored well on the tests. Students should practice on real SAT and ACT tests, not samples that are developed by a test prep company. It doesn’t make sense to practice on anything but the real test.

The SAT and ACT need to be kept in perspective. Students do not need to be in a test prep course that takes time away from their high school classes and studying or other important activities they enjoy. Each student is more than a test score. However, by not giving your student the benefit of some good test prep, you could hurt his or her college opportunities or qualifying for merit scholarships that are based on test scores.

Susie Watts is a college consultant who assists students with their college search and the college application process. She offers college counseling to help students become stronger college applicants. She is also a test prep coach and provides tutoring, small classes, and an excellent online course.

PostHeaderIcon How to crack SAT practice test

How to crack SAT practice test

Studying for the SAT is a long-term process that should begin in a student’s sophomore year when they take the PSAT. Not only does this make them automatically eligible for National Merit Scholar, but it gives a valuable score report showing strengths, weaknesses, and projected scores. From here, decide what you need to work on.

Basically SAT is Scholastic Assessment Test developed and conducted by College Board. The SAT exam is usually taken by high school juniors and seniors. It is given seven times a year in the U.S.

Keep taking practice tests as you get closer to your SAT test date. The SAT, remember, is standardized, so you will see the same questions on the real thing. Here are some Sat Preparation tests  to help  you in polishing your skills. Before you take these SAT practice tests, ensure that you have reviewed all provided SAT practice questions.

For the Critical Reading sections, you’ll need time to read the passages before you answer; depending on your reading speed, you should have about 30 seconds to answer each question. For the essay, you have 25 minutes to read the prompt, draft an outline, and write it all out.

Once you know your strengths and weaknesses, it becomes very easy to focus your studying. There are not many different types of questions on the SAT, so this type of in-depth is incredibly effective. For example, you may be good at math, but not very good with geometry formulas. It is much easier to study these narrow subjects. Simply Bing or Google geometry formulas and you can find the help you need.

For a few months, work just on vocabulary. It will help on both the critical reading sections and the Essay in the writing section. If you need help in a particular category, take quizzes only on that topic. One common area for improvement is reading comprehension and passage analysis. You can find these tests all over the internet.  And seeing your determination may help later when you have an 89.9% and they’re choosing between giving you an A or a B in the class.

Practice tests may be long and boring, but if they’re free and get you into the college of your choice, they are completely worth it.

Why Getting Help With the SAT II Subject Test is Essential

You’ve probably heard tons about the SAT exam. You may have heard that it’s challenging; however, if you score well, you will have a great shot at the college of your choice. But how much have you heard about the SAT II?

The SAT II is different than the traditional exam in that it is a subject test. It measures your knowledge and skills in specific subject areas, including English, science, math, and various foreign languages. If you are taking the SAT II exam for the first time then it’s a good idea to enlist some help for it. Here are a few reasons why …

You Can Target Your Weaknesses

When taking any college admissions exam, it’s not just a challenge to wrap your mind around the material that you will find on it, but also how to prepare for it. For some, the SAT II exam highlights subject strengths, but for others, some of the subjects covered may be a little be more of a challenge to conquer, even in the classroom setting.

That’s what’s great about enlisting help for this exam; if you are on the weaker end of the spectrum, you can find a tutor who can help you target your weaknesses subject-wise. This means, not only will you benefit from tutoring that can help to strengthen your knowledge and skills for the exam, but also for future assignments in high school and college.

Many Colleges Accept this Exam

You may be feeling a little leery about taking the SAT II, let alone enlisting help to prepare for it. But the truth is, there are a lot of schools out there that are ready and willing to accept this exam for admission. The exam not only helps them to determine how knowledgeable and skillful you are in certain subject areas; it also gives schools an avenue for advising students about course selection.

In some cases, you’ll find schools that actually go as far as to specify the subject tests that they require for admission. This is done to help them determine just how prepared you are for specific college-level work. So if you are attending a school that either accepts or requires the SAT II for admission then it is in your best interest to seek some type of assistance to help you prepare.

Online Services are Available

Probably one of the biggest reasons it’s good to seek SAT II help is that you can take advantage of it via online resources. You may be able to work with a private tutor who can help you in a one-on-one live chat environment. Or you may be able to utilize an online course that offers practices tests. Either format can work well. It’s just a matter of determining which might work best for you.

There is no doubt that taking the SAT II exam can be a scary prospect, especially because it can weigh very heavily on your college admissions. However, you can score well on the test if you prepare. The more seriously you take this process, the greater your chances are of getting into the college of your choice.

The Importance of SAT and GMAT Test Preparation

There are many benefits to attending test preparation schools rather than trying to do all the studying on your own, whether you are preparing for the SAT, the GMAT or any other important test that will affect your acceptance into a professional or collegiate program.  Many high school juniors take SAT preparation courses at local educational facilities to prepare themselves for this important test that affects their acceptance into undergraduate programs.  Current undergrad students and working professionals also rely on GMAT test preparation courses when they are planning on returning to school for a Masters in Business Administration program.

Test preparation schools provide many different options for prospective test takers to choose from.  Some people prefer the structured atmosphere of a traditional classroom, but some people do not prefer this style or cannot attend the class because of work and personal obligations.  This is why online courses are one of the most beneficial types of SAT or GMAT test preparation.  With the ability to take practice tests and review materials as many times as they’d like, students can prepare for their big test in the style that works best for their lifestyle.

Online programs are particularly popular for GMAT test preparation, because so many people who take the Graduate Management Admission Test are currently working and have very busy schedules.  Since so much is riding on the scores from this test, future MBA students must find a way to fit the proper amount of studying into their hectic calendar.  Being able to take the test prep courses online with unlimited access to timed practice tests, study guides and other materials, this type of program is actually preferable for many test takers regardless of their schedule.

Attending test preparation schools, whether in person or online, can make the difference between a high score and a disappointing performance on the SAT or GRE.  So it is important to sign up for a study program, start early, be consistent, and do whatever it takes to score high enough to get admitted wherever you want to go.

Elgin and Batavia ACT Practice Tests and Test Preparation: Is ACT and SAT Test Preparation Worth the Money?

Ever wonder if an ACT or SAT test preparation course is worth the money?  It is certainly a great worthy question and exactly the one I had when I first started investigating them. Here’s what my due diligence showed  to me.

Virtually Every School has a Lower Limit for Acceptance

There is a lot more than bragging rights riding on your ACT and SAT scores! First, virtually every college and university requires that you meet or exceed a minimum score in order for you to be granted acceptance.  At any given college  the more competitiveprograms require higher scores still.

Would You Like to Pay Retail or Get a Nice Discount?

So, you already knew that there is a minimum score for acceptance you say? Well did you know that those sticker shock tuition prices you see on most school websites, especially private colleges and universities are really just suggested retail prices?

Depending upon the college or university just a 1 point increase in your ACT scorecan reduce your tuition bill by ,000 – ,000 annually. Sounds incredible, I know but you can watch a 2 minute video here: ACT Test Practice Pays Off and see more than a dozen real world examples.

Fully Prepare for Maximum Return

Knowing that just a 1 point increase can be worth,000 to ,000 in tuition reduction over four years I hope you will agree with me that it makes a lot of sense to invest the time and money it takes to fully prepare for the test.  So the next question is how to best prepare?  For me, reading a book or even taking some online tests doesn’t seem to be enough when there is so much riding on just 3.5 hours.  Think about it, we’re talking about ,000 – ,000 an hour! Let those numbers sink in and you’ll appreciate why I wanted to get the most from my investment of time and money. For me it was simple. I wanted to get the hands on help that only a local test preparation company can provide

Test Practice Centers: What Should You Look For?

The only remaining question for me was what to look for in a test preparation center ?  Again, after plenty of  research I found these four essential criteria:

1. In depth knowledge of your school’s classes . This is essential because it allows you to focus on the holes and gaps that will be presentbetween your current education and what the ACT and SAT require .

2.   Small number of students. The optimum seems to be around 8 students in the class in order to provide the right balance between peer to peer learning and individualized attention.

3. Fluid course style with attention to individual needs .  Avoid centers that teach a canned course because it will likely not meet your particular needs.

4. Look for ACT and SAT preparation centers that emphasize both content mastery and test taking strategies as well.  Doing well on the ACT and SAT is as much about how you take the test as it is what answers you fill in .

After you conduct your own research I believe that you too will find that a local  ACT preparation company that offers a guarantee of improvement and small classes focused on individual attention will make the most sense for you. Remember, you are making an investment and the potential returns are huge!

A nearly overwhelming choice of ACT practice and SAT preparation resources are available for the college bound student.  I encourage you to use the criteria above to help you find the resources that will help you excel and grab the big academic scholarship you deserve. Sat Under Observation: Test Format, Sat Study Plan, And Strategies

SAT is an interesting and impartial test. Another thing less known about the SAT test is that it does not reflect the sum total of a student’s academic skills. Rather, it’s a platform that tests students on the basis of their reasoning skills. The SAT score is not the only thing that you need to get admission in a good college- past academics, recommendations and extracurricular activities are also important. However, most reputed institutions consider the SAT scores for admissions.

The SAT test format

There are three main sections in the SAT- Math, Critical Reading and Writing. These sections are further subdivided into eight sections with questions on reading comprehension, grammar, arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. A 25-minute essay is also required to be completed. The essay section appears first on the SAT. Including breaks, the SAT becomes a four hour and ten minute test. It is therefore important to get a good night’s sleep on the night before the SAT test day.

SAT Test Preparation

SAT, being a standardized test, requires a systematic study plan. No one book can guarantee you a good SAT score. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with the test through SAT practice tests. By taking a number of SAT practice tests, you can develop a better idea of the test pattern, difficulty level, and time management. The SAT test is designed keeping in mind an average high school senior. This is the reason why topics such as trigonometry, advanced geometry, calculus and higher level math functions do not appear on the test.

Test preparation should begin with revising the concepts that you would have studied in high school. Next in line are untimed SAT practice tests. Finally, you should start solving timed SAT practice tests. Attempt easy questions first and then move on to difficult questions.  If you are stuck with a question, skip it. Move to the next question. Hours of study and solving SAT practice tests could help you develop a winning approach for the SAT test.

Learning Center, Private Tutor or Online Assistance

To choose from these, parental involvement is a must. Let your parents decide whether they can afford the fee structure of these tutoring methods. A learning center, for instance, might charge a few thousand dollars for SAT test preparation. A private tutor, on the other hand, would charge less, but might not be available as per your convenience.

Cost Incurred in case of Learning Center: test prep fee, commuting costs, commuting time
Cost Incurred in case of Private Tutor: Tutoring fee, commuting cost and time (if not a home tutor)
Cost incurred in Online Tutoring: Tutoring fee

Before choosing a SAT test preparation institute or tutor you should look into four things- teaching methodology, syllabus, cost and convenience

Prepping for the SAT calls for a well laid study plan that incorporates all aspects of the SAT- concepts, vocabulary, grammar, elimination, guessing, and reasoning. It is good to start early. Consistent study is crucial to cracking the SAT. Burning the midnight oil is not necessary. Cramming a week before the D-day is not suggested.

PostHeaderIcon Tips for Improving your Standardized Test Scores

Tips for Improving your Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test taking can be a very stressful experience. Don’t freak out. Standardized test scores are important, but they are not the primary factor in deciding whether or not you get accepted by the college of your choice. If tests make you cringe, you can compensate for less-than-stellar test scores by having a solid GPA, volunteer work, well-rounded abilities and a heavy amount of extra-curricular activities.

Even though your standardized test scores aren’t the sole deciding factor in your application, you should still make every effort to ensure that your scores are up where they should be. Here are a few suggestions to help you improve your standardized test scores.

Take the PSAT. The PSAT is offered to juniors in high school during the month of October. The PSAT is just a Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test. It does not count toward your real SAT scores. The PSAT is optional, but you should really take it. It’s like a trial run that will familiarize you with the format and process of taking a standardized test. These tests take hours and have different sections, so you can practice your test taking stamina and see what subjects you score strongly in and what subjects you still need work on. Because it’s not the real thing, you’ll still have time to improve the areas that you need to work on, before you sit down and take the real test. There’s also a preliminary ACT test known as the pre-American College Test.

Consider getting a tutor, buying a study guide or enrolling in a test-taking course. The more you prepare for your standardized test, like the SAT or ACT (most colleges accept both), the less surprised you will be come test day, and the better you will be able to perform. These tests are marathons of scholastic output, and the more familiar you are with the format, the better you’ll be.

If you work well in a one-on-one environment, get a tutor before you take the test. If you learn better on your own, just buy a study book with sample tests and familiarize yourself with the format at your own pace. If you require a more structured approach, consider enrolling in a professional test taking course. These courses can be pretty expensive, but they can teach you valuable tricks and strategies that’ll give you noticeably better scores.

Get a good night’s rest before you take your test. Don’t show up late, don’t forget to eat a good meal and make sure you have a water bottle, some snacks, some headache medication and extra pencils handy. Practice controlling your stress. Try meditation, massage your temples or do whatever it takes to stay relaxed, calm and focused on the task at hand.

If you prepare properly, your standardized test taking experience will be a breeze. You will not be surprised or confused by particular sections or questions. If you invested your studying time accordingly, then you will not freak out. If you just have a crippling fear of multiple choice questions, that’s okay. Spend time developing your other application attributes (like grades, activities, an award winning personal essay, etc). Make every effort to improve your scores, and if your quantitative scores are not up to par, then overshadow them with your superior qualitative features.
