Want To Improve Your Sat Score?

While millions of students write the SAT for the first time, there are thousands of others who re-take the SAT test. You would be surprised to know that there is quite a large number of applicants who have had their share of the SAT twice or even thrice. Why? Obviously to improve their SAT scores.

Research however does not paint a pretty picture. Most students who retake the SAT test show minimal increment in their scores. And sometimes it might have a negative impact on their scores. It is not foolish of a person to retake the SAT. However, the decision should be backed by research and a well planned study plan. The vicious circle of test preparation, especially for students who wish to take the SAT yet again involves expenditure on expensive private lessons and test material. In fact, I know some students who had spent more than a few hundred dollars on test preparation books alone. Determination pays. However, it should be accompanied by hard work, and more importantly, smart study plan.

The points mentioned below would help the ‘experienced’ SAT test applicants to do well in the exam:

Focus on One-at-a-Time approach

The SAT monster haunts most students on account of its length and depth. And, as expected, most students find it difficult to handle all the three sections at the same time. Most colleges ask for your best SAT score for each section. In other words, your score would reflect your best attempts at each of the three sections. To give an example, let’s say that Joe took the test thrice with the following scores:

January 2009: CR(640), Math (660), Writing (570)

March 2009:  CR(710), Math (450), Writing (480)

May 2009: CR(560), Math (580), Writing (710)

I agree that in the above example, the scores (total) are very much comparable. The good news, however, is that the score Joe reports would consist of the best of the three sections. Hence, Joe’s score in consideration would be CR (710), Math (660) and Writing (710). If you look at this carefully, this would be Joe’s highest score. What I intend to explain using this example is that you should try to concentrate on one section at a time.

Increase your score with Easy Questions

The SAT test contains questions across three levels on the basis of difficulty- Easy, Medium, Hard. The SAT does not interestingly give you more points for solving a difficult question (which would eat up your time) than an easy one. Therefore, one should try to maximize the score by solving all the easy questions first.

Full length Tests

As the SAT comprises of three different sections, you should take practice tests and analyze your score in each of the three sections. This would give you an idea of your weaknesses. Most test preparation books for the SAT demonstrate ‘smart techniques’ like elimination and guessing, Use these to your benefit.

Online Test Preparation

It is not wise to invest thousands of dollars in getting private tutoring for the SAT. Instead, you can enroll for an online SAT preparation program and get access to one-on-one tutoring. There are many students who have benefited greatly from such online programs.

How to Get a Really Great Score on the SAT and ACT

What You Need to Know
The difference between a student’s being accepted or rejected into their favorite universities is becoming increasingly thin. Often, all it takes is a few points’ higher grade average, or another 80 points on the SAT, to make your children’s chosen future a reality.

Of course, the opposite is true as well, and those 80 or so points that he or she doesn’t get can be their worst nightmare, and change their future altogether.

No parent wants to see his or her child’s heart crushed like that. But thankfully, there’s something you can do about it.

The way I’ve found is best to do that is with SAT and ACT private tutoring. Not only can you select the type of tutor you want (even give a specific name, if you know one), but you can be there in the home to encourage your child and ensure he or she does the preparation necessary for success. It can even be a bonding expenience.

My Recommendation
The tutoring service I recommend is one that’s been around for decades. You may have heard of it: Kaplan Tutoring.

Having been a tutor myself, who has seen SAT scores go up by 50% (yes, really!), I can say that Kaplan’s tutoring service really is the best way to go. The amount of professional, back-office support and assistance you get, on top of the reasonable prices and excellent tutors, makes it a winner.

Math: in this section there are also two type of questions: one, there is a mathematical problem that has four answers, only one is correct. You have to choose the answer out of the four options. The other type of questions is questions with no given answers, you have to calculate and reach the solution and fill it into a special grid.
