Both students and parents understand that the SAT Exam is one of the most important tests of a student’s academic career. The SAT Exam allows colleges to compare different students from different schools on the same scale. For this reason alone, it is important for students to study methodically and thoroughly for this exam. The math portion of the exam is weighed very heavily when the student is interested in pursuing a college degree involving mathematics, science, finance, technology, or related fields.

Like other standardized exams, the SAT Exam is a test that can be studied for quite strategically. This is because the math topics included in the exam are well-defined and fixed. Moreover, the same question types appear from year to year, and so they make great practice material for students. Therefore, the logical way to master the math portion of the SAT Exam is to master the topics that are included on the test.

In order to best understand the topics on the exam, it is necessary to first review the textbook(s) that describe the concepts in detail. Study the relevant chapters until the material makes sense to you. Once you are done studying the relevant chapters, move on to the problems at the end of the chapter. Attempt to solve as many problems as possible until you are fully confident that you have mastered the solving procedure.

After you are done reviewing the material and practicing on the problems in your textbook, it is necessary to work on an actual math SAT Exam. Take this exam following the rules that would be followed on test day. In other words, time yourself when you are working within a section, and take the required breaks (as allowed) between math sections. After a sample SAT exam is completed, grade the exam and study your results. Note if there is a specific question type that appears to be causing problems or if there is a specific subject topic that continues to baffle you.

At this point, it may be appropriate to consider specialized, focused tutoring to fill in any gaps in comprehension. The tutor would be able to focus on SAT math and to place extra attention on the weaknesses until understanding of the concepts is improved. The tutoring may be either in-person or online. Recently, online tutoring has become more popular, as it is more convenient for both tutor and student. Moreover, online math tutoring tends to be more affordable than in-person tutoring.

In an online tutoring session, the tutor and student can work on the same interactive whiteboard and share problems, answers, and explanations. Using the computer’s microphone or a telephone, the tutor and student can communicate via voice to further communicate with each other. The tutoring session occurs in a private, interactive classroom and can be scheduled at the student’s convenience.

What is the PSAT and How Does it Help Prepare for the SAT?

If you’ve heard of the SAT exam then it is likely that you’ve also heard of the PSAT exam. Many students choose to take this exam as a form of preparation for the SAT within the same school year, or possibly in the following year. If you’ve never heard of the PSAT, or are just curious about what it is, take a few moments to learn more about it and how it can help you prepare for the SAT.

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is also known as the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Students in high school have probably already heard about the test in their freshman year, as many schools begin to prepare them for it so that it can be taken in the sophomore year.

The main objective of this test is to give students an idea of what to expect on their SAT exam. It gives them an opportunity to take all of the steps involved in the actual test (testing on the same sections and being timed) without suffering any true penalties. The test is free and offers a great building block to the SAT that is usually taken in the junior or senior year. How Does the PSAT Help Prepare for the SAT?

As mentioned previously, the biggest way that taking the PSAT helps to prepare for the SAT is that they are virtually identical tests. The PSAT has the same types of sections, including critical reading, math, and writing skills, and all questions are multiple choice. This works out well in giving students a clear idea of what the real experience will feel like.

In preparing to take the PSAT, it’s not much different than preparing for the actual SAT exam. However, it’s not uncommon for schools to make preparation a part of the school curriculum since it is tied with the National Merit Scholarship. With training in the classroom setting to prepare for the PSAT, you can take some of this knowledge with you as you sit down and prepare for the real exam in the following semester or year. A Cheap Way to Prepare for the Sat

First, Start early. Cramming for the SAT will only result in a lower grade. How early? Well like most things it depends. Some students may study for a year while others can cover the material in a few months. But in general at least three months of hard, steady prep work is needed.

Start by setting up your strategy. Build a schedule to follow and stick to it. Make sure you schedule in time to rest. A few days off a week will help you stay focused. Over doing it could put you in danger of burn out.

Your Strategy:

Begin by reading and familiarizing the rules and instructions of the test. Know what will be the test conditions. Each part will have it’s own set of instructions. Learn these first so you do not need to read them again. You need all the time you have for answering problems. Also make sure you are aware of what is allowed such a when you can use a calculator. When you begin each section you want to know what to do and start straight in on problems without reading the instructions again. Also, make sure you know where the test will be, including directions that are clear on getting there. You will also need to find out what you need to bring such as what type of identification is acceptable. You can get the basic information at CollegeBoard.com.

Now that you are familiar with the exam itself, you can start to prepare. The first step should be to take an evaluation test. This will give you a good base line score so you can measure improvement. To do this take an entire sample test from start to finish. This has to be the exact conditions you will be afforded in the real exam. There fore you will need a sample test. You can find a sample exam online on sites such as CollegeBoard.com or try your local bookstore. Your high school may also have a sample test. Make sure you don’t take breaks that you will not have with the actual test. Find a quiet are with a computer. Don’t use any resources you won’t have in the real situation. If you are not allowed a calculator in certain math sections the don’t use one.

Immediately grade the evaluation test and determine your base score overall and in each section. You will probably, if you are like most people, have sections that you do better in than others. Then look into each section especially the ones you did poorly to determine what areas in each section gave you trouble. In other words, in the math section was it the word problems or maybe fractions.

Now you know what areas you will need to focus. Gather your resources. Get books on the SAT that provide specific problems solving strategy. Use online forums as well as other online resources.

Now start with the sections you are having the most trouble and take more practice tests. Use the same constraints but only take the section not the whole test. This will help you focus on the area of need. Now immediately grade the section and review it. Get an understanding of where you went wrong and correctly solve each problem. Look for similar problems you missed in your test bank or example problems in your prep book or prep software. Then the next day take another test with the same section, grade and review. Keep this up until you improve and then go on to your next section. Follow these steps until you achieve a level of mastery you desire for the entire test.

If you find you are not improving in a section you need to look at the basic skills needed. You may need more algebra before you can even start to apply the problem solving strategies. That’s why it is so important to start early.

If you have the time, take another full test and review your total scores . Look for areas you need help and repeat. But if you don’t have the time just take the full test and grade it so you can measure your progress.

Following this strategy will help most people achieve the scores they need with the basic and inexpensive resources available online, in bookstores or in you library without using an expensive course or private tutor.
