Ever wonder if an ACT or SAT test preparation course is worth the money? It is certainly a great worthy question and exactly the one I had when I first started investigating them. Here’s what my due diligence showed to me.
Virtually Every School has a Lower Limit for Acceptance
There is a lot more than bragging rights riding on your ACT and SAT scores! First, virtually every college and university requires that you meet or exceed a minimum score in order for you to be granted acceptance. At any given college the more competitiveprograms require higher scores still.
Would You Like to Pay Retail or Get a Nice Discount?
So, you already knew that there is a minimum score for acceptance you say? Well did you know that those sticker shock tuition prices you see on most school websites, especially private colleges and universities are really just suggested retail prices?
Depending upon the college or university just a 1 point increase in your ACT scorecan reduce your tuition bill by ,000 – ,000 annually. Sounds incredible, I know but you can watch a 2 minute video here: ACT Test Practice Pays Off and see more than a dozen real world examples.
Fully Prepare for Maximum Return
Knowing that just a 1 point increase can be worth,000 to ,000 in tuition reduction over four years I hope you will agree with me that it makes a lot of sense to invest the time and money it takes to fully prepare for the test. So the next question is how to best prepare? For me, reading a book or even taking some online tests doesn’t seem to be enough when there is so much riding on just 3.5 hours. Think about it, we’re talking about ,000 – ,000 an hour! Let those numbers sink in and you’ll appreciate why I wanted to get the most from my investment of time and money. For me it was simple. I wanted to get the hands on help that only a local test preparation company can provide
Test Practice Centers: What Should You Look For?
The only remaining question for me was what to look for in a test preparation center ? Again, after plenty of research I found these four essential criteria:
1. In depth knowledge of your school’s classes . This is essential because it allows you to focus on the holes and gaps that will be presentbetween your current education and what the ACT and SAT require .
2. Small number of students. The optimum seems to be around 8 students in the class in order to provide the right balance between peer to peer learning and individualized attention.
3. Fluid course style with attention to individual needs . Avoid centers that teach a canned course because it will likely not meet your particular needs.
4. Look for ACT and SAT preparation centers that emphasize both content mastery and test taking strategies as well. Doing well on the ACT and SAT is as much about how you take the test as it is what answers you fill in .
After you conduct your own research I believe that you too will find that a local ACT preparation company that offers a guarantee of improvement and small classes focused on individual attention will make the most sense for you. Remember, you are making an investment and the potential returns are huge!

I encourage you to use the criteria above to help you find the resources that will help you excel and grab the big academic scholarship you deserve. As you navigate your way through the college admissions process, hiring a tutor to help your son or daughter prepare for the SAT is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. It’s a big investment of time and money. You want the best return on your investment that you can possibly get.
The key to getting a big return is the tutor that you choose.
If you make the wrong choice, you’ll face endless battles with your son or daughter over the amount of effort he’s putting into his lessons and homework, and the prospect of little or no improvement in his score.
If you pick the right tutor, you’ll dramatically increase the chance that you’ll end up with a happy, motivated, confident child who’s SAT score goes through the roof.
Choosing wisely can be a daunting prospect. There are a lot of tutors and a lot of tutoring companies. It can feel like you’re buying a car. You don’t hire a tutor very often, and you’re dealing with a professional who’s job it is to sell his services or those of his company.

Should you hire a tutor at all?
If you’re reading this report, you’ve probably decided to hire one. If you’re on the fence, let’s examine a few reasons why hiring the right tutor can make a big difference for your child.
1. It’s hard to get into a good college today. The number of applicants to the most desired schools has gone up dramatically in recent years. The number of students being admitted has stayed fairly constant. Many of the top private and state schools are reporting record low admissions rates.
Are you considering a top public university? In the spring of 2009, UCLA admitted only 21% of its applicants, the lowest rate of any public university in the country. UC Berkeley wasn’t far behind with an admission rate of 23%.
Considering a top private school? Some Ivy League universities had admission rates of less than 10%. The top small private colleges had admission rates in the teens.
2. You’ll pay as much, if not more, at many mid-ranking private colleges and universities as you will at the most selective schools. In a recent study of the cost and quality of a college education, Malcom Gertz, a professor of economics at Vanderbilt, found that the price of tuition is not directly associated with the quality of education.1 In fact, the most selective colleges offer the most financial help.
3. Projected lifetime income for students at the most selective colleges and universities is significantly higher than it is for students at less selective universities. According to Caroline Hoxley, a Stanford based economist, the average difference in projected income is .2 million.2
4. Higher SAT scores mean a greater likelihood of a getting a merit based grant or scholarship.
5. Perhaps most importantly, a significantly higher SAT score increases the likelihood that your child will get into the school of his dreams.
Choosing a college is an enormous decision. Better SAT scores mean more choices. Now more than ever, the stakes are high. Test preparation isn’t just another educational expense – it’s an investment in your child’s future.

Why does my school buy high end computers just to use Microsoft Word and occasionally Internet Explorer?
Why does my school buy high end computers just to use Microsoft Word and occasionally Internet Explorer? They always complain about not having any money after they buy this stuff for no reason… My old crappy laptop can run those programs just fine and it’s from 1999.
They also complain about not having money for books and paper. We have to supply our own paper FOR THEM.

Do I HAVE to take SAT prep classes to do well?
Or could I use an alternative method and get the same results?
I’m going into my Jr. year of HS September 4 and I haven’t taken the PSAT or SAT, nor have I had any preparation for it. My mom talked to Sylvan Learning Center today about a class they have for SAT prep, but it’s 00 for one month of training? Hmmmmm… I’m PRETTY SURE I won’t have time to go everyday, nor would I want to, so I don’t see how 00 is a reasonable cost being as that I KNOW there are other programs and methods that are cheaper. We have the money, it’s just that, me personally, I would think it’s a waste of my parents money… especially since I already want/need a lot of things to be bought for me this month (my birthdays this month, school starts in September, etc.)
What are some different methods of preparing for it or how did you prepare for it? Books? Classes? What?
And if you did take it, what was your score?

Do you think those kids who get sent to testing prep camp things get very good test scores?
I know some people who get sent to writing camps and SAT stuff and I feel like so unacomplished like "why arent I enrolled"? Those cost quite a bit of money dont they? Do they actually help alot? Does that mean those who dont go to those camps fail at life? My brother didn’t go to any of those and he got 1450 out of 1600 when he was in high school :/ Im just wondering if im really missing out?
if you get a grant and it’s not all used for school where does the rest of it go?
i applied for fafsa and i live in california. if i get approved for fafsa and not all the money gets used for my college what happens to the rest of it? they said i could get 5300 dollars, but my college will only cost about 1500. so where is the rest of that 5300 going to go? straight to me? or does it get saved for my next semester? i really need a laptop for school, which is why i am wondering what will happen to the rest of that money… and i also need to buy books. could the rest of the money be used to buy my books?

SAT Prep courses: need recommendations please!?
Hey, so background info real quick: took the SAT in March 09, and scored a 1790 (cr: 550, math: 620, writing: 620.) see, i had taken a prep course through sylvan learning center, but i truly do not think it made a difference. it was a very weak (but unfortunately expensive) course and i really need to increase my score, seeing as my dream school is Georgetown!!!
my goal SAT is roughly a 2100. if you have a course you want to recomend, thanks so very much. 
so, anyone have any suggestions on test prep centers that are GOOD!!!??? Put money aside for a moment, and just speak loud and clear please. I really need that score and am willing to study and prep as much as possible for it. so if you know of a great prep place in the houston area of texas, please, please, please let me know.

How do i connect my xbox 360 to the internet through my wireless laptop?
Ok here’s the deal, i have my laptop and xbox 360 which is on one side of the room (this is quite a long room, not sure how long but i dont feel like measuring) and i have the desktop computer in the other end of the room which is connected to a wireless router. What i want to do is connect my Xbox to my laptop and then using my laptop connect to the internet, just in case ill put a little diagram:
XBOX 360 <ETHERNET CABLE> LAPTOP <WIRELESS> DESKTOP/ROUTER <INTERNET>
Now ive been google-ing around and have found many people asking the same thing and others sharing their success in connecting and saving the money instead of buying a wireless connection for xbox, i have tried a few of these methods and none have yet worked, i have tried: making a bridge connection between my wireless and xbox cable and that didnt work and just plain connecting the xbox to my laptop and wirelessly connecting. i have tried both multiple times and nothing seems to work and aside from this topic sometimes my laptop doesnt recognize the xbox and when i do xbox-laptop connection test it fails. sorry for the long question but i really wanted to express in detail.

I can’t pay for tutoring… how can I study for the SATs?
Ok so, I am very confident in English, however, not so much in math…
Some of my friends are spending up to 10,000 a year JUST for SAT tutoring…. I know my family cannot afford that, nor do I have the free time like my friends do. I have a lot of other things to do. (No, not hanging out, it’s more significant than that.)
Anyway, I need to take them some time this year.
What can I do to make sure I’ll get a fantastic score on the SAT with zero money and little time?
Simple preparation for a two-pound young chicken?
I have a small chicken that a co-worker gave me and it’s been sitting in my freezer for two weeks. I don’t have the money to go out and buy special ingredients for a little thing like this and an old condition prevents me from being able to digest the tough matter of fruits and vegetables that I might otherwise have prepared it with. What can I do with it?

SAT/ACT Prep?
Has anyone taken the SAT/ACT prep courses at Sylvan Learning Center? or do you know anyone that has? I’m considering taking it over the summer, but I want to know if it’s worth my money. So, if anyone could enlighten me on how much they benefitted from the course, that would be much appreciated. Also, if you could name some other places/private tutors for test prep go right ahead! Tell me what you guys recommend! and any tips for SAT prepping and testing are also welcomed! lol.

I’m starting high school soon and i want to buy a laptop that is fast, i can do homework on and so i can play.?
i need a laptop that i could play sims on, do homework using microsoft word, excel and power point i also need it to have fast internet. And not to expensive i might have to buy it with my own money.

SAT prep tutors worth the money ?
Well im planning on taking the SAT after summer and i want to be ready because my goal is to break the 2000 mold and i know that is not a easy task im not one of those people who are just gifted with test taking im more like a study your but of and get a good grade type person. Im willing to work and study hard, i was considering in investing in a good SAT tutor like a one on one thing, i think the indivual attention will do me justice.
So has anyone got one ? if so was it worth the money ? how much was the improvement ? and which company ?
