Ok here is the deal, I have just setup a trendnet wireless n home router to our motorola modem. We are using two laptops, the one that I setup the router with wired.. and the one that i have been testing the network out with in the other room.

Here is my question, when I disconnect the wired laptop from the router, can i then connect that pc to the wifi? without the router or modem being connected to a pc at all?

because the wired pc sees the wifi, but it just waits and wait when i double click on it. but when i plug it back into the router it connects within seconds.

Hi. I found an old abandoned laptop in my new office. There’s no hard drive in it, so I assume it’s had some problems. But I’d still like to see if it’s salvageable. I suppose I could just buy a new laptop hard drive and test it that way, but is there another way I could test the other elements of the computer without going that route? One thing that worries me is that I cannot get it to boot from the CD drive. I have an XP and a Linux boot disk, neither of which can get the computer to respond. It just starts up and then says it can’t find a hard drive.

I do have two other laptops and a desktop that I can use for diagnostics, if there’s a way to hook that laptop up to them and do some testing. Thanks!
It’s a Compaq Presario 2100 series, model 2175US. I have played in the BIOS, putting the CD drive up to boot first – no dice. I have looked through all the manuals on the Compaq website, but didn’t see anything applicable.
Actually, Knoppix is what I used. It’s a borrowed disk, though. I might try burning a "fresh" copy and seeing if that might work.
I created a new copy of Knoppix and verified its bootability on another laptop and a desktop. Unfortunately, the "broken" laptop couldn’t recognize the disk. I imagine there’s something wrong with the CD drive or its connection. It gets power, so the drive spins, but it’s not reading the disk. Any other suggestions? Or should I just write it off, especially if I need to get a hard drive and, possibly, a new optical drive as well?

I am getting one of those notepad laptops for Christmas, and I was wondering if any one had any good ideas for which one to get. I would prefer a small laptop, not too fussed about if it can play games, but is able to get different software on such as adobe and word processor, things I can use for my school work. Internet access if also a must. Thankyou.

I’m getting my first laptop… My dad’s friend fixes up used laptops and sells em’ pretty cheap, so he’s gonna buy me one. I get to go test it out on monday, but I feel like I can’t do anything accept think about that laptop. I’ve even looked up random stuff on google to try and fix my problem…. What should I do to get my mind off of it?

i have two laptops, a wireless usb card i just bought for one of the laptops.. i want to be able to run both laptops off of the same fee i’m paying each month. hubby says get a usb to ethernet connector, plug it in to the wireless router we have currently and then they will both work from there. does this sound right? its not like he can test it out.. he’s in iraq right now and i need to make a decision before i can’t take this wireless card back. thanks for the info!

i might buy a new laptop instead of my old one because my old one had trouble in it so do u know any good laptops? i usually use my laptop for songs, movies, school homework and chating so do u recomend anything for me?

i have a s-vid cord but one of my laptops are vista and one are XP, i wanted to know , if i would be able to share files between both laptops using a s-vid cord, i know i could if i had a double sided usb cord but i dont have that . i only have a extra s-vid cord witch both computer are able to use,
i wanted to ask on here because i did not want to mess up my computers by testing that out.

will it work?

Just wondering if patients that are in the hospital are able to use their laptops and get online without interfering with medical equipment. I know cell phones aren’t allowed, but not sure about computers.

Hi Ive been searching for a laptop for school and I have 2 laptops that I really like. I want a laptop that is good with notes and organization and multimedia. I don’t really care abt battery life because I can order a bigger battery if I need to. but my two picks that’s I like are the HP Touchsmart tx2z or the HP Pavilion dv2z. and my budget is 00
maximum. and I’m using it for highschool. Please let me know which laptop you think I should get or recommend another nice laptop for school for 00 or under. Thanks

I’m looking for a laptop to buy for myself to double as a home use and school use laptop, I am a bit of a gamer so I wouldn’t mind one with some decent hardware, but I have a solid budget of around ,000 CAN that I have to work with. I don’t care much about weight or screen size, but I would like one that is decent looking. Please no Macs. Can anyone suggest any laptops available in Canada that would work for me?

Just got a new PC for testing apps, I was wondering whether I can use a KVM to run the PC from my Laptop.

Most configurations I see are for using KVM for 2 PC or controled from a PC; what I want to know is whether I can use the laptops Keyboard, monitor and mouse to control the PC.

This is more of a followup of my last question. I did a speed test using dslreports.com using my desktop connected via a linksys usb wireless G and with cat5. I also did this test with one of my laptops. The speeds were all faster than the stated speeds for my plan. The wireless was actually rated faster than the wired. I am getting around 6Mbps which is what I get during downloads. The problem is that when transferring between computers on my lan speed is the same speed most of the time. I have done wifi laptop to wifi desktop, cat5 laptop to cat5 desktop, and any other combination. They all transferred at the same rate except for when I connected my laptop via cat5 and my desktop via wireless which was twice as fast.

I am thinking that my wireless router isn’t routing very quickly no matter how the computers are connected. My router is a Linksys WRT54G with DDWRT for firmware. Are other routers better at Lan throughput?

i use laptops for school starting med school soon but was thinking about gaming over the summer? World of warcraft. so whats the best laptop for gaming and school?

I want to buy a new laptop. I want use this laptop for school work, graphing and lots of multimedia. I would like to know what laptops are good for this, but my budget is only of 800 dollars. So please help me because i have only had desktops and don’t know a lot about laptops.

I’m looking to buy a new laptop. I have a laptop, but it is old and used and does not run well.

I’m planning on using this laptop for school writing assignments and taking notes in class, so I will need one that has a long battery life as well as one that is relatively light and portable.

I will also be using it for recreational purposes, such as e-mail, IM, games, etc. so I would need it to be able to handle downloads, photos, CDs, DVDs, and itunes easily.

Unfortunately I am also on a budget so I’m looking for the best possible price. I know absolutely nothing about computers/laptops/operating systems and everything like that.

And if it’s possible I’d like suggestions that will help me decide how to set it up once I buy the laptop.

I’d also prefer to buy a newer laptop, but I will deal with whatever suggestions are given because I trust my knowledge of computers, well, not at all.

im interested in buying a used laptop off of craigslist and i dont want to get a piece of junk. i want it so i can access the internet but i dont have the internet at home so i cant just plug it in and give it a test run. i dont think i could take out the ethernet jack out of a university computer and plug it in. and most laptops im looking at dont have wireless cards, and even if they did, i dont know how to use them.
