I am looking for a laptop mostly used for school and email, editing pictures and I also will be downloading music on it (which i know puts me at risk for some viruses). So I’d buy the norton anti-virus for the next years(is this sufficient enough for my protection). I plan on having it for 4-5 years at least!, I plan on getting the best buy Black-tie warranty for another 0. It is on sale for 9 at best buy. Please tell me any suggestions or pointers you have! or other reccomendations. I’ve never thought as gateway as being a good brand, so i am really unsure, but i also don’t know a whole lot about computers. Is the 4gb of ram worth the extra money? or is 3gb plenty of room for me, and my computer still not be slow after a few years?

Thank you =]
Yeah, im not a gamer at all, unless the occasional pogo counts!

PostHeaderIcon Which laptop should I buy Dell Inspiron 1720 or Acer Aspire 7720G?

Hi

I want to buy a laptop for school work, using applications and for quite a lot of gaming. I have got two options at the moment:

the Dell Inspiron 1720 – http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0399594088.1218824002@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccjadeeljmemihcflgceggdhhmdfho.0&chain=PC_World&seo=yes&sku=136908&channel=WEB&page=Product

OR

The Acer Aspire 7720G -

http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_7720G-1A2G24Mi_Laptop_LX.ALN0X.249/version.asp?tref=fpg-Acer%20Aspire%207720G%20Gemstone

Specs:

Dell Inspiron 1720
·Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2390
·(1.86 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1 MB Cache)
·Genuine Windows Vista (R) Home Premium
·2 GB Memory
·120 GB Hard Drive
·17" TrueLife Widescreen display
·NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphic card
·256MB dedicated graphics memory
£399.99/0

OR

Acer Aspire 7720G – 1A2G24Mi
·Processor – Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 / 1.5 GHz ( Dual-Core ) – L2 2MB Cache
·RAM – 2 GB (installed) / 4 GB (max) – DDR II SDRAM ( 2 x 1 GB )
·Hard Drive – 120 GB – Serial ATA-150 – 5400 rpm
·Operating System – Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
·Screen – 17′ TFT active matrix 1440 x 900 ( WXGA+ ) – 24-bit (16.7 million colours)
·Optical Drive – HD DVD-ROM – integrated
·Graphics – NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS TurboCache supporting 1GB – 256 MB
£449.97/0

To me, they are essentially the same but there are a few significant differences that I would like to know more about. <( Listed Below )>:

Which is better: ·

1. – (Dell Inspiron 1720)
Intel Pentium Dual Core Processor T2390
·(1.86 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 1 MB Cache)
£399.99/0

OR

(Acer Aspire 7720G)
·Processor – Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 / 1.5 GHz ( Dual-Core ) – L2 2MB Cache
·RAM – 2 GB (installed) / 4 GB (max) – DDR II SDRAM ( 2 x 1 GB ) ???
£449.97/0
2. – (The big question) –

(Dell Inspiron)
·NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS graphic card
·256MB dedicated graphics memory
OR
(Acer Aspire 7720G)
·Graphics – NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS TurboCache supporting 1GB – 256 MB ???

For the question about graphics, I am wondering what the TurboCache to benefit the 8400M GS and if it makes it better than the 8600M GS.

Q3 – If the Acer Aspire 7720G is better, is it worth it for £50/0 more?

Q4 – is the processor for the Acer significantly better and which laptop has the better graphics?

Q5 – Will either/both of the laptops play games like COD4, cysis, fear and bioshock. (Being able to play Cod4 is a necessity)?

Thank you very much for looking!

EDIT: 22:03 BST – 15th August 2008

Thank you very much everyone for taking an interest but i am still undecided as half the answers have been dell, and half have been acer. Please can I have some more detailed answers and reasons, especially for Q1 and 2.
Thanks again.
