When it comes to GMAT test prep, everyone has different tips and tricks that they say will work best as you get ready for this important exam.  Many people suggest taking an online GMAT preparation course, and there are many other tools such as personal tutoring, books, CDs, software, flashcards and practice tests that round out the experience.  What they often neglect to mention, however, is how important it is to prepare for taking the test itself, regardless of the material that is on it. 

The GMAT is a timed test with three different sections, similar to the SAT but geared towards graduates who are applying to MBA programs at leading business schools and universities.  As you get started with your GMAT or SAT online course, you will undoubtedly learn all about the material that will likely be covered in the math, verbal and writing sections of the test.  But unfortunately, many students neglect the principles of smart time use during their GMAT test prep, which can result in careless mistakes or running out of time.  Learning how to manage your time is one of the most important tricks to acing the Graduate Management Admission Test.

While taking a GMAT preparation course or following an online test prep program, it is crucial that you learn how to manage your time and know what to expect during the actual timed test.  One trick that some people think will work is checking the clock after every question, but this can actually have a counterproductive effect.  Your attention should be focused on the calculations and careful reading of the questions instead of being occupied by the clock.  This is why the best trick is actually to adopt a staggered timing strategy.  An ideal strategy is to only check the timer once after every 10 questions at most.

So if you’re preparing for the GMAT, it’s important to get an idea of what the test will be like and whether you are prepared to finish all the questions in the time allotted.  Timing truly is one of the most important aspects of GMAT test prep.

After going through all the GMAT books, here is my comparison about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guides:
Pros – Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons – No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not very good explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros – It covers every section of the test as much as possible by a single book. Also a good source for additional practice questions.
Cons – Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Unrealistic questions.

Princeton:
Pros – Good for learning how to make educated guess and process of elimination. Focuses more on test taking techniques.
Cons – Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Weird sense of humor of Joe Blogs.

Dummies:
Pros – Good book if you are looking for test taking strategies and brief overview as it covers every section. It’s definitely worth the price.
Cons – Not a regular standalone type of a book. You’ll certainly need additional help.

Barrons:
Pros – Intensive math review. Big list of questions. Good test taking strategies. Very well organized. This is by far the best of the all-in-one kinds of books.
Cons – Although the book has a good math review, it doesn’t go deep enough into each concept. Does not have a good section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions, which is one of the most important question-type. Does not break down the concepts/questions step by step. This is the only book I recommend you must buy apart from the OG.

EZ Solutions (series of books):

Great practice question bank in basic and advanced workbooks. As with most books, you are expected to already have a good knowledge about the various match concepts, but with these books, you can literally start from scratch and reach the most advanced level of the GMAT.
Cons – To get the best result from these books, you have to invest in buying several books (set of 10 books), but if you compare the cost and benefits, the benefits outweigh the cost, or you can buy a few not all. Missing the verbal section. This is not a good option if you are looking for a very basic brush-up. Recommended for serious test takers who have enough time for preparation.

A Good Attitude Should be Part of Your GMAT or SAT Prep

There are all sorts of test preparation services that you can invest in if you are taking the SAT or GMAT.  There are SAT prep courses that students can take, and tutors that can help provide insight into all the components of this challenging exam.  There is GMAT practice test software that includes practice questions, practice tests, score tracking systems and even timed tests that simulate the real thing.  One of the most important things you can do to prepare for these tests, however, is learning about the right attitude to have on and before test day.

Whether you are taking one of these SAT prep classes or studying from GMAT prep software, it’s important to have a good attitude throughout the whole experience.  Although a good attitude won’t make you smarter or inject more information into your brain, it will reduce stress.  Since stress makes you less efficient, makes it harder to study and makes it easier to make careless mistakes on test day, learning to retain a positive attitude is crucial.  It should be just as important as investing in other test preparation services to earn a higher score.

Many people suggest looking at the SAT or GMAT as a game, which is definitely a good attitude to take.  SAT and GMAT questions are actually a lot like doing puzzle games, just like the ones that were on your placemat in fast food restaurants when you were a kid. They are just on a higher level that should be compatible with your current level of education.  And if you are competitive, think of it as a sport.  Taking a GMAT practice test is just like practicing your swing to do better in the game of baseball or practicing to become a better kicker in a game of soccer or football. 

These tips are especially important on the actual day of the test.  When the questions get really hard, you can consider them a move in a sport or a game of chess, as opposed to a difficult question.  With help from ongoing study and investment in some sort of test preparation services, this sort of attitude will ensure a winning score on test day.
