master list of colleges. which ones are hard/easy to get into? is a post from: The GRE com

I’m applying at various colleges (such as Georgetown, U Penn, UVA, Duke, etc.), and I was planning on taking my three SAT IIs in November and the real SAT Reasoning Test in December. Is December considered to be too late for regular decisions into most universities? Does it look bad to take SATs in December? Any answer is helpful! Thanks!

1. I hate the SAT and i have almost a 4.0 GPA overall, so im smart but horrible at SAT testing ive tried SAT prep courses it just isnt working for me so what are some good SAT optional colleges?

2. do students from these colleges succeed better in the workplace than students from SAT required colleges?

please anything you know will help!

Hey I took the World History AP test about mid May and now I am signed up for the World History SAT II. The thing is I just started taking the test on the REA preparation book for SAT II and it is much much much harder and specific then what I encountered on the AP exam. Is the SAT subject test really more specific then the AP test?

Thanks for answering
to first poster, Yeah I know AP classes really are useless, like it doesn’t help only makes it easier to register for classes. But it sort of looks better for colleges along with a GPA boost.
to 2nd poster:……………………………..
to 3rd poster: Yeah like what the heck is the Velvet Revolution I learned nothing that specific and the AP test multiple choice was nothing like that. I didn’t even bother to score my 1st practice test because I did so badly and knew like crud. Hopefully it will be more AP oriented multiple choice.

Critical Reading : 490
Writing: 570
(MC: 57, Essay: 8)
Math: 450

whats my total score? and if this were my real sat score would it get me into decent colleges?

An IQ test presumably measures inherent intelligence, and the SAT was originally intended to do just that. An IQ test would eliminate unfair advantages gained from students who can afford expensive test prep. as well as those trained to do well on the test for years versus those who are too poor or too disadvantaged.

Opinions?
I am fromt he U.S. and my question was not on whether I should send my IQ test scores to my colleges as well but more an opinion on whether an IQ test should be given over an SAT test from college admission XD. Moreover, some IQ tests test spatial intelligence (your interpretation of shapes etc.) and artistic intelligence as well. Also, athletic minds are judged already in admission when couches of top universities (or scoutss) sit in on some games of high school athletes as well as judging their athletic records.
bah some grammer errors* mmmm.

Hey my two sisters had an SAT tutor and now I have them. They are a couple who teaches SAT, but I feel like I am not being prepared! Even though it is one on one, i feel very uncomftorable with them, and I am afraid to ask questions. When I do, I feel like I don’t get a clear response. I really want to take a prep class somewhere else or get a different tutor, but I am afraid my parents wont let me because my two sisters got into good colleges and they had this tutor. What should I do??

All high school courses are honors, you have a B-plus average, you have taken an SAT-prep type of course, however, your SAT scores come back on the middle to low side. Would colleges you are applying for even look at you?

Is the writing really hard to do well on? At this SAT preparation course students, including my friend and I, took practice tests similar to the SAT, which I know because of taking tests from the blue College Board book and asking another friend who took the SAT and the same course when she was our age, about 2-3 years ago.

My friend got an 800 on writing, and I got a 740, but for some reason when she took the real SAT (I haven’t yet), she only scored a 600. What gives? She was really good at writing and did assignments for 25 minutes in 10 minutes, getting maybe 1 wrong. Also the person who is most likely gonig to be valedictorian at our school only got a 710.

Any tips? In the College Board book I’m scoring in the 700s, getting only maybe 4 wrong with. I think my essays are pretty good. I need a good writing score because math is the easiest for me, probably a pretty easy 770+, but critical reading I’m only getting mid to high 600s. I was counting on the writing, which is easy for me, to get me around 2150-2200, but people aren’t doing good on it. Why?? Advice???
Also, on the PSAT I got a 68 on writing (HOWEVER, only 3 were wrong and none blank; it must have been a bad curve, and after looking at the PSAT I realized one or two of those errors were really stupid mistakes).
I know I need a good score for good colleges. I don’t really need help with writing since I’m getting almost every question right under timed conditions. I just don’t get why such smart people are doing so poorly, including my friend who got an 800 on writing for a practice test similar to the SAT.

Alright well I took my SAT last month and did poorly on Reading/Writing. I did do good on math aleast but I need to retake it and with most college applications being due Jan 15 I am signed up to take it again for Dec so I can get my scores back in time to send them off to colleges.

Now I only have a month and I want to make sure I get the best book out there to help me cause im pretty much going to lock myself in my room haha and study this book all day and night learning new techniques and strategies.

Do you all recommended any other books out there? Or am I good with this one.

After finding out how Holy Cross doesn’t require any standardized tests, I am ecstatic, especially the fact that it doesn’t put me at a disadvantage.

My SAT scores are as follows:
SAT Reasoning Test
1250/1920

SAT IIs:
Chemistry: 720
US History: 750
Math Level 1: 700
Math Level 2: 580, 620, 670

ACT: 30

I took the SAT once without preparation to see if it’s the test for me. Apparently, by my scores, it is not, therefore I opted for the ACT, which is a decent score. However, I’m really persistent on showing Holy Cross my SAT II scores. But I would have to send the SAT scores all at once, meaning they see my crappy reasoning test. So then I would have to submit my decent ACT score.

All in all, would this hurt me? I feel these standardized tests do not put me in a good light, because my school load and corresponding grades are much more impressive, considering how I always took honors and AP courses, giving me a 96.5 weighted GPA and a 94.2 GPA.

On a side note, should I give only 1 great teacher recommendation, or add another one? One social studies teacher I’ve known for 4 years and had in freshman year and now for AP Euro, wrote me a phenomenal letter. I feel it is sufficient. However, I also have another teacher in mind that I had for 2 years in a row for Honors Chemistry and then for AP Chemistry in my sophomore and junior year. Although I wasn’t the best student in the class, I actively participated, went to extra helps all the time, the teacher loves me, and he pushed me to my limits.
Here’s the thing, I can’t send individual SAT scores. It’s the whole thing, with the good and bad.

Also, I thought that the colleges will disregard the lower scores of my Math Level 2, because I have improved it over time.
I CAN’T SEND MY SAT II SCORES BY THEMSELVES!
The deadline for the interview was December 31st for an on campus one, and December 1st for an off campus alumni one. I didn’t do either….

Am I hurt by that and the fact that I didn’t visit? The interview is highly recommended, but I blew my chances apparently.

However, Holy Cross is sort of my within reach school, not necessarily a safety, but not a total reach.

My daughter just took the SAT and got an overall score of 1840 - 680 for reading, 650 for writing, an 11 out of 12 on her essay, and a dismal 510 in math. Obviously, she’s not going to be studying anything math-related in college! She has a 3.5 GPA and is in the upper 1/3 of her class of about 600 kids. Knowing that she’ll be going into an English-related field, how will colleges look at her SAT scores? And aside from hiring a SAT-tutor (is that even worthwhile?), how can we help her get these scores up to a more respectable number? She did similarly well on the ACT - composite score of 26, with excellent results in the English sections, and not-so-great results in math. She’s interested in attending Hillsdale College, Carleton College, Colby College or perhaps Middlebury. Thanks!

I recently took a practice SAT in preparation for the real SAT in May. I just got my results. I got a 1790 overall, 510 for math, 600 critical reading, 680 for writing, and 8 for the essay.
My question is if these scores are good, considering it is my first SAT.
Also, what can I do to improve them? What did you guys do?
What colleges will these scores get me into?
I’m a junior currently.
Thanks

without any specific practice for sat i scored above 1450 in diagnostic test…math 510 C.R 500 and writing 440(excluding essay)…i am foreign student and english is my second language…i have more than 3 month for sat preparation..how much can i improve and what is minimum requirement for admission in colleges of USA???
i just finished my 12th class.

If I do poorly on a SAT test, what will that do with my resume? Will re-taking it and doing better completely solve the problem, or will it be hard to overcome? I am asking because I don’t know if I want to go ahead and take the test in January with little preparation or if I want to wait all the way until May (I can’t do the March one). Thanks
Just to clarify, I am asking whether or not colleges only see your highest scores.

sive to colleges. I got a 2180 on my first attempt on the SAT and was wondering if Ivy League Schools such as UPENN or Harvard would be more impressed that it came from a poor school as opposed to a Private Rich Kid School, where they are offered SAT classes and all that good stuff. It seems unfair to me that some people can afford SAT tutors and get perfect scores and thus get into these top schools.

I’m a junior and I need to know like the best prep book to use and if I should take a prep class or not and which class would be the best. Any other helpful information would be greatly appreciated.

Also how should I study for the SAT II subject tests. I haven’t taken any yet and I need to take like two or three. I want to go to UCLA or USC so is there certain subjects I should take. And one more thing. I think I can take the u.s. history test this year and physics next year, but im not sure what other subjects. and will colleges only see the scores that i want them too or all of them. oh and last year i did really good in world history and biology, but i was too late for the tests. now my memory has faded majorly, but should i try and refresh with a prep book and try and take those now.

i’ve gotten really tense about all this because it seems all my peers have already been preparing and what not. is this a really late time to be prepping and how much should i be studying a day. thanks!

I was caught trying to look over questions on a previous SAT Section, and I think they’re going to invalidate my scores. What/how should I tell my parents? What is the procedure, will colleges/my parents get notified of their cancellation?

I’m taking it through FLVS. The first SAT scores were: Math- 420, Reading- 350, Writing- 370. I retook the test a couple weeks ago but haven’t got my scores back yet. Some of the colleges I want to attend require a combined score of 1200 with just reading and math. How much do you think this course will help? Do you think it will help me enough to get this score or at least close to it? Sources?

What subjects are on the SAT?

How many questions?

Do colleges/universities look at the score?

Need help! i bought an online course and i took the practice sat test and i got… is this good/bad/average?
Critical Reading : 490

whats my total score? and if this were my real sat score would it get me into decent colleges?

I am applying to UCs and CSUs:

-How do i know which colleges to send my scores to?
-Where do i go to get my fee waiver identification code?
-Is collegeboard an "additional" score report or a required
thing?
-How many colleges can I send my SAT scores to?

[please no "i dunno/whatever" answers] thanks.

I got a 760.
I had 770 on the SAT Reasoning test math part.
I can’t find anywhere what scores colleges want on subject tests… so is this decent? Do you know where I could find information about subject test score ranges at different colleges? Thanks!

Taking the test Nov or Dec 08. If I haven’t applied, they don’t know me. Is there some system at most colleges for filing SAT scores on students who haven’t applied with the college?
