Publishing a book of poetry

The journey usually starts with a friend or family members telling you maybe you should get your work of poetry publish because it is so good. You probably said, “I don’t think my work of poetry is good enough for others to read. I only write to share with friends.” Well, maybe it was not quite like that, but usually we always start by sharing our work with friends and families. As time passed, you probably continued sharing your poetry and you continue to hear the praise coming from their lips about how good your poetry is. You convinced yourself maybe it would not be a bad idea to at least try to see if anyone would give you an opportunity and publish your work.

This is probably where your journey into the dark side of publishing started. Everyone in the publishing industry turns your work down. The letters are saying things such as: “that it’s not what we are looking for right now.” Your self-esteem stumble and all your friends and family who always praise you continued with their encouragements, but you know your chances are close to zero on getting a major publishing house to publish you. Then you start to hear about self-publishing and went to Google to locate a self-publishing company to help bring your dream to realty. The sales representative tells you how you can create your own book and own the rights to your work and the royalty will better than industry average. The only thing is, you would have to share in the cost of the publishing.

You agree and ,200 later you have your book. You went to all your friends and most him purchase a copy, though it was way over price, but they did it to support you. After you sold your friends a few of your poetry books, you sat around waiting for the self-publisher’s website to help you generate sales, until they told you have to pay more money if you want a promotional campaign for your book. Now you realized you did not even break even from the first ,200 you spent; now they want you to pay more money. If you are smart you would stop. Today, I want you to know you are not alone.

My name is Gamelz and here at www.ipublishabook.com you will get a chance to read all of my books for fre. I always wanted to write and publish books just like you, but never realize the challenge I would face trying to get a publisher to look at my manuscript. I went the route you always hear a writer should not go, and that was to self-publish. I write short-stories and poetry. I realized this genre has very little appeal to book publishers because they are not able to generate a profit from that type of publishing. Once my book came from the printing company, I realized very quickly I was not going to generate huge sales and that I needed to share it with others. So, I decided to create this website www, ipublishabook.com and offer the book for free to those who want to read it.

I did not write to make money. I wrote it because I enjoy writing and wanted to share it with others. This site www.ipublishabook.com will include my entire writing portfolio, again, for free. As an aspiring writer, I am always looking to be part of a new and exciting project. Please take a look around to see my site www.ipublishabook.com and read my work and my distinctive style of writing and let me know what you think about www.ipublishabook.com I would appreciate it very much. I would conclude by saying for you not to give up on your dream to publish poetry or any other style of writing; it is a wonderful feeling to share your publish work.

PostHeaderIcon You Wrote a Book! Now Where On Earth Do You Publish It?

You Wrote a Book! Now Where On Earth Do You Publish It?

If there’s a list of the “Ten most frequently asked questions about writing and publishing a book,” this question will be near the top:

“I want to write a book. Should I try to get a publisher, big (like Harpers) or niche (like New Harbinger)? Should I publish my own ebook? And if so, should I create an e-book to download? Or pay for hard copies?”

The answer (as usual): It depends. What do you hope to accomplish with your book?

Experienced authors will advise you, “Decide where to publish before you write the book.” Sales depend on choosing a title, topic, writing style and content strategy tailored to your publishing platform.

(1) Traditional publishers:

Cons:

Expect a long, arduous process to go from proposal to print. These days, most authors need an agent just to get past the mail room. Getting an agent will be just as tough as finding a publisher. Not all agents will be motivated to work to sell your book. I’ve heard many authors complain, “My agent just sat on the manuscript for 6 months.”

Once you sell to a publisher, your agent gets 15-20% of royalties plus expenses. You have little control over cover art and jacket copy. You create your own publicity and “buzz,” even if you just got a big advance. And unless you create a best-seller, you will not make a lot of money from the book.

Pros:

There is no better way to create credibility and even prestige. If your book is any good at all, you get media publicity and speaking opportunities. You probably will not make a lot of money from the book itself.

But you can enhance a coaching, consulting, speaking or therapy practice. I owe thousands of dollars to my own book, which is now available as a self-published download. I didn’t earn this revenue from the publisher but clients saw my book and called for consultations.

(2) Downloadable E-book

Cons:

Making money from e-books is more about marketing than about writing. You follow a formula. You need to identify a market, find a topic, write the book, and convert to pdf, the best cross-platform software for ebooks. You absolutely, positively need a hard-hitting sales letter, which means you learn copywriting or hire a pro. And you need to help buyers fix glitches when they try to download your book or pay with their credit cards. Software can do the work but it doesn’t come cheap.

Pros:

No delays! You are limited only by your writing time. Once you learn the system, you feel like you are counterfeiting money. Your ebook can enhance your other offerings as bonuses. Sure, you follow a formula. But if you follow the formula with care, you can earn a healthy income.

And, with a quality ebook and a well-designed business model, some of your readers will turn into clients.

(3) Hard copy self-publishing

Cons: This option can offer you the worst of both worlds. You pay and often warehouse the books in your garage. Yes, you can sign up for print on demand, but you pay considerably more for each book. Do not choose the cheapest package. Expect to pay hefty fees for cover art and design. Nearly everyone needs to hire an editor. Reviewers tend to regard self-publishers with suspicion, if not disdain.

Pros: This option can offer you the best of both worlds. If you regularly hold workshops or speak to large audiences, you can sell your book to your audience. This process is called “back of the room” or “from the platform,” even though you may not actually stand in the back of the room.

Coaching and consulting clients may not care who published your book: often they are impressed to see any book at all.

Which option is right for you? Review your goals and your business model. And most important: before you write even one line, plan how you will promote and distribute your book.

Regardless of your publishing path, you become a marketer rather than a writer as soon as you say, “I want to write a book.” By planning ahead for this role reversal, you can save considerably on your marketing investment and enjoy far greater success.

Get a Cast of Characters to Help You Write A Book

Have you ever sat at your computer or with your writing pad and your mind is blank? The words just won’t come. You had a great plan to write a book but you are stuck. Or maybe you are feeling a little insecure and wonder if you will ever finish your book. You begin to feel that writing is such a lonely profession.

Fret no more! Did you know that you could have a cast of characters to draw from to help you finish your book? With this team you not only will complete your book but it will be the best book you’ve ever written because of the feedback you received while your were writing your book.

To get you started, below is a list of people you can include on your list. This cast can help you write and market your book.

Cast of Characters:

Writing Buddy: This person is awesome. A buddy that agrees to listen to your story as you write it, ask you questions to help you move the story forward, and agrees to follow up when you make an agreement to finish a part of the book by a specific date. Also, gives you support and encouragement.

Book and Publishing Coaches: These experts can save you a lot of time and grief. They know the field and can move you quickly through writing and publishing your book. However it is important that you are ready to write and commit to this endeavor. Don’t waste your money if you cannot commit some time on a regular weekly basis to write a book.

Cheerleaders: Family, friends, co-workers, clients, and prospects can help you market your book. Ask them if they would be willing to tell their friends and customers about your book when the time comes. Or on a casual basis you can tell them how your book is coming along. People love to be in on the beginning of a book idea. They will cheer you on if you let them in on the progress of your book

Interviewer: This is someone who agrees to listen to each chapter idea and then interview you on the chapter topic. Ask questions. Once a week you two will work together on a chapter of the book and record the session. Then you can take the recording and use the information in your book.

Researchers: College interns or library assistants can help you with any research you need. For a reasonable fee you can let someone else do this grunt work for you and you will stay on the creative side of writing.

Your Bookstore: Go to the bookstore once in awhile. Search the shelves for books like yours. Buy a book. Sit and have some coffee and enjoy the moment. You will feel more like an author every time you go to the bookstore.

Read the Acknowledgement page of books that will be similar to yours. Write down the names of editors and literary agents mentioned in the book. You may want to contact them when part of your book is done. Or ask one of your cheerleaders or research people to do this for you.

Reviewers: Make a list of people — no more than five — that are willing to review your book once the manuscript is done. Have a set of questions ready for them to answer — Is there anything that needs more clarification, is the continuity okay, etc. These are the people that review the book before it is in its final stage. You will want to implement some of the suggestions they make in your final draft.

Foreword Expert: Who is going to write the Foreword of your book? Make a list of potential experts. You want a recognized expert in your field if possible. Start collecting names and addresses.

Published Authors or Speakers: Gather the names of published authors and speakers that you meet at conferences and networking events. Ask them if you might contact them with questions you might have as you are writing your book. It is important to keep them informed if they agree because they can also be cheerleaders and marketers for your book.

Testimonials: Every book should have testimonials in it and on the book cover. Start making a list of people you want to give you testimonials for your book. Start a relationship with them as soon as you can. Especially those authors and speakers you have on your list.

Bloggers: Wouldn’t it be nice to have some bloggers write a review of your book in their Blog? Research Blogs for the ones you feel are the best ones to promote your book.

Do your homework, create your lists, and be prepared. You could save hours of writing time and stay on target with your cast of characters. Plus you will have a ready-made team of people who will market and promote your book when it is published. Writing is not such a lonely profession after all. In fact, it’s fun when you have built such a fantastic team that is rooting for your success.
