Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!

People, even Collegeboard and other SAT preparation corporations, say reading builds one’s vocabulary. K so i’m actively reading a book and i come across a word i don’t know; do I continue reading or look it up? because looking up words you don’t know will take a longer time to finish the book and chances are you might forget the word.

so question is read or look it up?

Look it up if you don’t know the meaning of the word. Even if it takes longer to get through the book, you’ve learned something new!!

  • e$ says:

    you learn both ways

  • April H says:

If you can gather the meaning by the context that the word is in, keep reading. If not, then look it up. By looking it up you can also get an idea of how the word is pronounced.

your question is the answer… if you do not look the words up how will you learn new words and build vocabulary?
Look the words up, write them down an memorize.

have a notebook and pen ready when you read. Jolt the words you don’t understand down but read on. At the end of each chapter look at the list of words you have noted, and see if you can understand them. If not look them up in a good dictionary, preferably one that does not translate the word into your own language but gives a definition in its own language. Only if you still don’t understand look it up in a bilingual dictionary… that way reading really builds your vocabulary!
