    Get a dell, definitely.

I highly recommend Dell, that’s what I use and my grand-daughter uses Dell for her school work…Inspiron is great! good luck!

it doesn’t matter what company you get.

what matters is the specs (cpu, ram, HD, video)

    Why?

Because there’s no difference between a HP, sony, Dell, etc. THEY USE THE SAME TYPE OF HARDWARE.

what you should focus on is getting the right specs, for the right price.

    exception:
mac- they really are different, and are much more expensive.

Dell’s, compaq, and acer Ive heard are the worst. Toshibas have an excellent reputation and I have friends that are still toting around the first laptops toshiba ever made. They are the longest lasting certainly and have been in the game from the beginning.

Dont be afraid of vista. I heard all the same BS when win98, 2000, and XP came out. Minimum should be a processor that runs 1.6ghz and at LEAST 1gb of ram.

Laptops you can get on sale at best buy every week with no mail in rebates. GEt them from ebay, and you dont know what youre going to get and may not have a viable warranty. Buy brand new, theyre not that much anymore. I got mine on sale at best buy for $350 one week.

No Dells. Horrible reputation in laptops. I used one my school checks out from the library and it was junk.

    1. Now my first concern is to which brand should i buy ??

ive had a Hp and Dell so far, both are very good laptops

    2. vista is crap, definitely go with xp if you want a problem free life, unless you know how to partition your hard drive and have both. dell offer the inspiron 1520 with xp, and there is also the most expensive one in the xp range that can be got with xp. i got the inspiron with xp and have had no problems. very good reliable laptop.

    3. buy from the dell or hp website, both have offers and bundles most of the time. dell always seem to have money off laptops.

    4. dell staff are very helpful and will answer all your questions

    5. if you are using the laptop for gaming i recommend the inspiron one i have, the 1520.

    2GB RAM is standard
i upgraded to 250GB hard drive
i got the higher resolution truelife screen as well, just looks better

everything else you dont need to change

your brother laptop sounds good, my friend got the same one and LOVES it!

    hope this helps you

i highly recommend a Dell. hp and compaqs are only good for prices. Dell has real quality.

I can’t tell you what to buy any more than anyone else on here can, but I can say as a depot repair tech that fixes desktops, laptops, etc., which models I like and which ones I don’t.

    Likes…(starting from best)
    HP/Compaq
    Sony
    Fujitsu

    Dislikes..
    Toshiba
    Dell
    Apple

I would never buy a notebook off of eBay or Craigslist. I buy either new or factory refurb (directly from the company).

Vista is fine, but I would say to have at least 2GB of RAM (which is par for the course these days anyway). I run it on an HP DV6500t w/ a Centrino Pro 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo and it flies w/ Vista Ultimate 64. That’s far from what you’ll need to do any of the above-mentioned stuff, so I would say anything from $800 and up will suit you quite nicely.

Check the company websites for education discounts. HP and Apple both offer them.

One nice thing about Vista Ultimate is you can get Virtual PC 2007 for free from Microsoft to run XP, 2000, 98, etc., or anything else you want in virtualization (ie. no rebooting).

I’ve owned 6 HP notebooks and only one has been a lemon; it was replaced by HP w/ a new machine which has lasted fine since.

Sony’s are excellent but you are paying more for style and fashion of the machine. Beautiful screens, too.

Fujitsu makes very reliable laptops. Pricey.

Toshiba’s are not known for their high reliability. Few class action cases against them… nice cases though

Dell has good warranties….fast machines…hastily built though. I ordered an HP custom from the factory at the same time my buddy did from Dell. His came a few days before mine did and it had to go right due to issues w/ the build quality…mine was fine.

Apple… niche product, fewer people use it so fewer problems. However, all repairs are done by Apple or Apple Certified Service Center. Short 90 Day phone support unless you buy ext. warranty. Repair quality is not great (check their discussion forums…http://discussions.apple.com). Macbooks are known for flickering displays, chipping topcases, and running very hot. Can’t say if latest release is any better…

You have choices so pick whatever fits your budget. Most repair people I know either own Lenovo or HP–Lenovos are nice but pricey and don’t always have the latest/greatest chips and graphics cards.

Good luck in whatever you decide on.
