    studying on your own is perfectly fine. i took the sat three times once without studying, once after an online prep course, and once after studying on my own.

    my highest score was from studying on my own.

    stop by borders and pick up a college board prep book for about fifteen bucks. it gives you tips on strategies that are extremely helpful, gets you oriented with the testing style, and does the same things an expensive tutor will do for you.

    generally it will help, but it depends on your altitude. if you really want to increase your score on a test, you can learn on your own first, then if you stuck you can write the questions down and ask your tutor. Otherwise, it would probably the waste of money.
