Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!

I’m a junior in high scool, I took the march SAT and scored a 590 in reading, 560 in math, and 370 in writing (really bad I know). I had a stomach virus the days prior to the test so that may have had a little effect on my scores, but I really need to improve them. I’m planning on applying to University of Rochester (among others), the middle 50% scores for there is 600+

Was the problem in writing the essay or the multiple choice? If it was the essay, try doing a timed practice essay and then asking your English teacher to grade it – the essays are really short, so I don’t think she’ll mind. If it was the multiple choice, that’s easy, just do practice tests. You’ll get the hang of what "sounds right" soon enough.
Besides that, you need two books – one full of practice tests and Up Your Score. Okay so you don’t really NEED Up Your Score per se, but if you’re going to get a review book, that’s the one to get. It’s got everything but practice tests, and reading it actually isn’t a miserable experience. Its cheesy humor has a certain charm haha. Plus it has tons and tons and tons of test-taking tips, which are really what the SAT’s about. Trust me, it’s completely worth the $15 (or somewhere around there). Oh! And it comes with downloadable vocab list for your mp3 player, so if you’re an audio-oriented learner, that’s a nice bonus (I’m a visual learner, so I used the mnemonic cartoons in the book instead). The practice test book should also be around $15, so that’s 30 total, which isn’t too bad.
If you’re still hesitant about that cost, sometimes schools lend out SAT review books. Mine does, but I don’t know how many other schools do. Good luck! :)

    stupid stomach virus
its OK, u can always take it again
u can improve ur score by mainly:
    1. memorize a load of SAT vocab with cheap online sources
    2. in writing, there r only certain mistakes they make, namely subject-verb n stuff. u need to take some practice tests and u’ll get used to the questions. u’ll have to buy some books or practice tests of course, but its much cheaper than paying 1000 bucks for a 2 week SAT prep course
    3. find essay prompts online and jst do them, preferably with 3 examples for support per essay. if possible, use the same 3 examples for all prompts, this way u become an expert on those 3 things and u can use it in all the essays, since most topics r really general.
    4. timing is important soo again its all bout practice practice practice, not necessarily strategies or anything like that. OK? cool

u’ll do good dont worry. its mainly the writing thats killing u; however i kinda doubt u can get into rochester. UNLESS u DONT apply financial aid and do early decision. sorry.

One good way to help your score is by improving your vocabulary. You can do this by reading good books and finding lists of words (and their definitions) that are commonly used on the SAT.

University Language Services has online reading and writing practice questions you can try:

    Good luck!

barnes and nobles sells prep books that kaplan and the princeton review actually put together.
they come with a book with strategies and full explanations on why the right answer is the right answer.
some of them even come with a companion CD with more examples on it. and most of them come with an access code for an online resource too, with even more practice examples and full practice tests.
the only way you can get better is by doing the problems over and over again,
so i would really recommend these books, they are relatively cheap too, running no more than $30

    Good Luck!!
