Hi and welcome to my blog,
I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!
I am willing to devote 10 hours a day for the next three months to obtain a 2300/2400 on the SAT reasoning test. That is definitely not an exaggeration. I REALLY want to get into Princeton and I think I need a strong SAT score to do so. Which methods would be most worthy of my time:
An SAT prep course
Memorizing 1000 SAT words
Reading a book a week
Taking numerous practice tests
Memorizing all geometry and algebra theorems and formulae
Any other suggestions?
Wish you had written 2 years ago.
Reading a book a week? More like a book every 2 days. Get novels so you enjoy yourself, and read read read. Read for 2 hours at bedtime so you can do other things during the day. I have a relative who unintentionally got an 800 on critical reading 2 months ago because she read constantly after school for a few years. Just trash novels. She likes to read. Maybe she is smart, too, I suppose. And all that reading should help with the writing part of the SAT, as well.
Here’s some other info about schools like Princeton:
When I called Johns Hopkins U to ask, they said they "look" at the 9th grade scores, but they don’t calculate those scores when they figure out your GPA. They look at your grades in only CORE ACADEMIC CLASSES (sciences, English, social studies, math, maybe foreign language, I’m not sure) for grades 10 and 11 and half of 12th grade when they decide who to admit. They add up all the grades for the core classes, take the average and that is your GPA that they work with. 90-100 is an A, 80-90 is a B, etc.
Want to know what else they said?
Only 21% of the applicants are accepted.
They look to see if you took the hardest courses offered at your school.
Did you have leadership roles in all of your after school activities?
75% of the kids admitted to JHU have a GPA between 3.7 and 3.8
They like to see volunteer work and good letters of recommendation from your teachers, but the high school transcript is the most important thing. If that doesn’t look good, nothing else matters. They don’t want to hear about potential, they want to see what you have done.
Typical ACT score of those students who are admitted: 30-34 composite (top score is 36)
Typical SAT score of admitted students: 1350-1500 in the old SAT (top score was 1600 then)(800 in math and 800 in English is top score on old SAT)
The lady in Admissions said that they don’t really care much if you made National Merit semi-finalist. They care about how hard your classes are and what grades you got in them.
Brain tissue implant from Einstein.
Ha! Just kidding.
For the prep course, make sure it has good references because otherwise, it’ll be a waste of time and money.
Don’t really need to memorize that many words, unless you really don’t already know them or your reading comprehension skills suck.
Reading a book? What for?
Practice tests are good, but after the tenth they get boooooring and repetitive.
Umm dude, they give you most of the equations on there, but if you really feel the need…
Seriously though man, if you’re meant to get into Princeton, you’ll get in. They don’t rely only on high SAT scores and GPAs. Round out your schedule. Write a killer entrance essay. Get amazing recommendations. And RELAX. I’m sure they have enough tight asses as it is. (Besides, those admins can smell fear a mile off XD.)
