Usually when people have trouble with reading comp, it’s for one of two reasons. It might be that you’re having trouble with reading the passage. Focus on the main idea and structure of each passage. Read each paragraph for the main idea of the paragraph, and jot down a few words in the margin to remind yourself what you were thinking. The SAT is meant to test your understanding of big ideas, not details, so don’t worry about understanding the details when you read, just worry about why they’re there (what larger point are the details supporting).

Some people struggle with reading comp questions even though they understand the passage. If that’s the case with you, try this exercise: take a reading passage and start by marking the correct answers next to each question (do this before you read the questions). Then go through and try to explain why each right answer is right (find the support for the choice in the passage) and why each wrong answer is wrong. This exercise lets you focus on the patterns of the test without getting frustrated by whether you got the question right or wrong.

    Good luck!
