SAT prep classes can be either a waste of money or a complete help to the individual who takes them. For most motivated students the big name companies of Princeton and Kaplan hand them a 600 page book and basically just teach the students the strategies in the book. So, basically, you just paid $1200 to learn strategies from a book (something you could have just as easily accomplished by buying a 20~30 dollar prep book).

However, some students who have NO clue as to what the SAT is and how to attack it find the prep classes as a stepping stone to individual study and excelling. Someone above me stated that their score raised 250 points through attending some of the classes. Most prep classes provide their students with great materials and go over those materials with them. For those students who have no idea where to start with the SAT or do not know the basics of the test, a prep course might benefit them.

Personally, after attending 1 month of prep classes I realized that I could have achieved everything i learned at home for 30 dollars and saved my parents $3000.

they do work but it all depends on how much effort you put in it

It depends on you. I took the SAT prep class and improved my score by a good 250 points.

    Good luck!

SAT prep is definitely worthwhile, whether it’s in a class on on your own. I don’t think a class is necessary to improve your scores because you can learn the same strategies from other prep resources (books and online). But some people get a lot out of classes because you can ask questions and it makes you accountable for doing your homework.
