Sat Secrets Revealed: Get 2200+ On The Sat

Is your SAT test preparation program providing you with strategies to get a 2200-plus score on the SAT? There is no substitute for hard work. But in addition to working hard, you need to work in the right direction. Strategies for SAT test preparation would be of no use if you do not implement them while writing SAT practice tests, or just solving some SAT pre test questions. Most SAT test takers aim for the 2200 mark. A SAT exam score that’s even close to 2200 is possible. And you do not need an Einstein-like intelligence to achieve that. Here are a few strategies that I find important for crossing the 2200 score on the SAT test. All these strategies help you guess smartly while saving time and preventing you from making silly mistakes.

Knowing the Test Directions beforehand

The directions on the SAT are always the same. It would be a great idea to know them from the moment you start your SAT test preparation program. This will save you time when you take the actual SAT. Let me clarify this with an example. The SAT test paper would have three main sections further divided into few subsections, making a total of eight. Now, if you spend even one minute reading the directions of each of the eight sections, you end up being eight minutes short of the total allotted time. By knowing the directions in advance, however, you could have utilized those eight minutes into solving SAT problems.

Do not be the sheep

Most SAT test preparation programs would tell you to answer the questions in order. This is totally absurd. Most scorers know the fact that moving through the test efficiently, not necessarily in the order of questions, is the key to scoring high on the SAT. If you cannot answer a question in one minute, skip the question- no need to challenge your ego there. This is because the SAT does not differentiate in terms of awarding points between easy questions and hard questions. If you feel a particular question could be solved in the next attempt, you should circle the question and move on. Circling would help you locate those questions easily.

Guessing: Forbidden or Forgotten

There is no strategy more debatable than guessing. Most people would ask you to never guess an answer. What they do not understand that guessing is a strategy, which if properly implemented, can maximize your SAT score. The SAT does not penalize you for guessing. Does it? By eliminating one or more than one answer that shouts out loud it’s incorrect you can turn the odds in your favor.

Let me explain this scenario. The SAT deducts a quarter point (1/4) for an incorrect answer. The fraction points that a student loses on the SAT actually compensate for the points that could have been won through random guessing. You should be able to eliminate one or two wrong answer choices on most SAT problems.

The SAT test has become synonymous with college admissions in the United States. SAT test preparation, therefore, has become necessary for doing well on the SAT. The SAT exam is a standardized test that tests students on the basis of their reasoning skills. There are a few things that parents and students must know about this standardized test. Let us talk about some of those things.

The SAT test is a three hour forty five minute test. There is also a 25-minute experimental section. But the score of this section does not contribute to the overall SAT score. Including this section, the SAT becomes a two hundred and fifty minute exam. If you add the breaks, the SAT becomes a 5-hour test.

There are people who might want to take the SAT a second or third time. What is the test taking limit? Students, in general, take the SAT a maximum of three times. Exceptions exist here too as there are some who claim to have written the SAT test more than five times. Suppose you write the Sat more than once. In that score, which score would be considered by colleges? There is no fixed rule to this. However, as general rule, colleges consider the score of every attempt at the SAT. However, different colleges have different criteria- some take into account the highest combined total SAT score. The best thing you can do is check with the college’s admission office to understand its admission procedure.

What about students who have disabilities? Can they take the SAT? College Board has set certain accommodations for SAT test takers having documented learning disabilities. However, there is a process involved for this. The student is required to complete a Student eligibility form before registering for the SAT test. More details about registration for disabled students can be found on the College Board’s website.

How to register for the SAT? Online registration is perhaps the simplest and the quickest way to register for the SAT exam. Students would have to visit the College Board’s website and follow the registration procedure. The first step would be choosing the desired test date and test center. The best thing about registering online is that one can get immediate registration confirmation.

Registration via mail is also an option. College Board allows SAT test registration through mail if a student wants to pay by check or money order. There are some other criteria too about which you can read on the College Board’s website. Standby registration and homeschooled registration are also available.

Students should ensure that they understand the registration policy carefully before registering for the SAT test. Students (and sometime parents) believe in the myth that the SAT is a complicated exam that asks for years of rigorous efforts. This is not the truth. The SAT is a fairly simple test that has been designed to challenge the student’s reasoning skills. SAT test preparation should not unnecessarily burden the student. With a SAT study plan that covers SAT practice tests and test-taking strategies, doing well on the SAT ceases to be a difficult affair.

How To Choose An Sat Tutor: Questions To Ask, And Answers To Expect

What to look for in a tutor

Whether your son or daughter is shooting for a perfect score, happy to break a 1700, or somewhere in between, you want a tutor who can help her to break through to the next level and reach her potential.

Since junior and senior year of high school are a busy time, you also want a tutor who can craft an approach that will be easiest for your particular child and most conducive to learning without stress. There’s work involved, of course, but the right SAT tutor should increase her confidence, calm her fears, inspire and motivate her, help her to focus, and take an approach to tutoring that’s tailored to her particular strengths and weakness and works best for her personally.

Taking the SAT is similar to activities like sports and theater; there are many factors that affect someone’s performance. It’s not always what a student knows or how talented he is that makes the difference. If you want your child to perform at his best in a super stressful, make or break test taking situation, you need a tutor who can help him prepare mentally and emotionally, not just academically, for the test.

The right SAT tutor will help your child learn exactly what’s going to be on the test and how to approach it. As importantly, the right tutor will help him learn the mentality to have while taking the test and the mentality to have while studying. That’s the combination that results in a greatly improved score.

It’s relatively easy to find a tutor who understands the material that’s tested on the SAT and the problem solving methods. It’s hard to find a tutor who understands his students.

Here are are some questions to ask, and some answers to look for, to help you make this very important decision.

1) Can I speak directly to the tutor you plan to assign to my child?

If you’re thinking of hiring a tutor from a company such as Kaplan, Princeton Review, Revolution, or any other company of that nature, ask them if you can speak to the tutor they plan to assign to your son or daughter before you make a commitment to hire them.

It’s not enough to know the company’s philosophy or the company’s track record. If they won’t allow you to speak with the tutor directly before you make a final decision, walk away.  

Of course they train their tutors, and would never send a tutor who didn’t understand the algebra or know the grammar rules. It’s not enough that the tutor knows the material. You have to ask the specific tutor himself the questions that follow, and receive satisfactory answers, or you run a high risk of getting a tutor who can’t help your child.

2) Do you have testimonials or references?

Every tutor will have them. The important thing here is that if you’re considering a tutor from a test prep company, you have to get testimonials or references for that tutor himself. You can’t rely on those for the company in general.

3) How much experience do you have?

Experience doesn’t equal effectiveness. Someone with 7 years of experience won’t necessarily be better than someone with only three. However, a tutor with only a year or two of experience hasn’t worked with enough students.

Every student is different. They have different issues, different learning styles, different personalities, and different roadblocks that get in the way of doing their best. You can’t count on a tutor with only a couple of years of experience to handle the particular challenges that your son or daughter will face on her way to getting the score she deserves.

4) What’s the most important factor in getting the best score possible?

There are 2 acceptable answers.

The first one is “focus.” Focus is the most important factor in getting the best score possible. When taking the SAT, if a student isn’t paying full attention at every moment, he’ll get questions wrong when he knows how to get them right.

Answers that seem right but are actually wrong are built into every section of the test. A skilled tutor knows this and is always helping his students sharpen their focus. It’s the absolute, number one key at all score levels.

The second acceptable answer is motivation or perseverance. As President Obama said in his back to school speech,

“People succeed because they understand that you can’t let your failures define you – you have to let them teach you. You have to let them show you what to do differently next time… If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying. No one’s born being good at things, you become good at things through hard work… You’ve got to practice. It’s the same with your schoolwork. You might have to do a math problem a few times before you get it right, or read something a few times before you understand it, or do a few drafts of a paper before it’s good enough to hand in.”3

Studying for the SAT can be frustrating. It can make a student feel stupid sometimes. The key is to keep working at it.

It sounds obvious, but sometimes that’s what eludes us. If a tutor doesn’t know that motivation and perseverance are the key to massive improvement, he either hasn’t worked with enough students, or he doesn’t know how to help his students address these challenges.

5) What is the key to keeping a student motivated?

There are 3 keys to staying motivated.

The first is knowing why you want to get your results.  When a student is motivated by a strong desire to get into a particular school, she’ll stay motivated to push ahead with studying for the SAT even when it gets tough.  

The second key is expecting a positive outcome. If a student gets discouraged and feels like she won’t reach her goal, her motivation to keep studying will weaken. When a student expects to be successful, her motivation will stay strong.

The third key to staying motivated is enjoying the process. It really helps when the tutoring sessions are fun and engaging.

A skilled tutor will impact all of these areas. If a tutor says that motivation is purely the student’s responsibility, find a different tutor.   

6) How do you eliminate careless mistakes in the Math section?

You can think of a careless mistake as one where you knew the right answer, but made some sort of mistake along the way. The issue isn’t carelessness, though, it’s a loss of focus.

When doing a math problem, a student has to do 3 things correctly.

He has to read the problem correctly, meaning he has to know what information the problem is giving him, and what specifically it’s asking him to solve for. Then he has to figure out how to solve it. Finally he has to do a calculation correctly. If he makes a mistake anywhere along the way, he gets the problem wrong.

An unskilled tutor will simply say that careless errors come from rushing and the solution is to slow down. Or he’ll say that nothing can be done about them.

A skilled tutor knows that the way to eliminate careless errors is for the student to take a few seconds after reading the problem and ask himself, “Did I read this correctly?”  Then after finishing the problem and before moving on to the next one, take a few seconds and ask, “Did I calculate this correctly?”

When mastered, that’s a silver bullet.

A skilled tutor knows that “careless” errors happen when a student loses focus. He might not describe the steps to correct them exactly as I have here, but should know they’re correctable and have a plan to do it.

7) What’s the key for a student who wants to improve his score in Critical Reading?

Reading more and studying vocabulary are two important steps a student can take to get a better score on this section of the SAT, but if a tutor gives you this answer, you have to follow up, because it passes all the responsibility to the student.

There are two other keys to improvement that a tutor should know.

A skilled tutor knows that the most important thing to focus on in the reading passages is the main idea of the passage. When a student who’s a pretty good reader has trouble with this section, it’s often because he got stuck on the details and missed the main point.

A skilled tutor also knows that students who do really well on this section use the process of elimination to eliminate the answers that are clearly wrong, then pick the best remaining answer.  Unlike in math, where the right answer is clearly right, in the Critical Reading section a student has to look for the best possible answer among the choices given.

Give the tutor extra credit if he tells you that if a student is still unsure of the answer after eliminating those that are clearly wrong, he should pick the one that most closely reflects the main idea of the passage.

The Critical Reading section is the hardest one to improve on. If a tutor doesn’t give you one of these answers, he won’t be able to help your child on this section

How do you accurately gauge a student’s strengths and weaknesses? How do you gauge her potential score?

A skilled tutor will interactively go through official College Board SAT material with a student and carefully watch how she works. When she struggles, he’ll ask her what she’s thinking and listen carefully to her response. He’ll offer suggestions and see how she responds. He’ll encourage her to ask questions of her own.  He’ll be patient and watch how she responds to instruction.

A skilled tutor eliminates the pressure of time and creates a relaxed atmosphere. He knows that going slow is the key to building a student’s confidence. It shows both the tutor and his student what the student really knows and what she doesn’t, what her real level is.

It’s often the case that someone who thinks she’s bad at math, for example, rushes the questions because she’s nervous or insecure. She’ll get more questions wrong this way, of course, and reinforce her belief that she’s bad at it. The same is true for someone who thinks she’s bad at reading.

In order to know a student’s true potential, the tutor has to create the conditions for it to come out.

A skilled tutor knows that every student is different. When a tutor works with a student this way, it takes no more than a few hours to see what her real issues are, identify her strengths and weaknesses, and formulate a plan to help her improve based who she is as an individual.

A tutor who works this way can not only assess his student’s potential score, he can also give her a taste of reaching it, and show her what she needs to get there.  

If a tutor tells you the way to do it is with a diagnostic test, walk away. If the he tells you that he plans to give a diagnostic test that’s produced by a test prep company rather an official College Board SAT, run.

The results of a diagnostic test can only show what questions a student got wrong, not why, and it can’t show a student her potential, only her limitations.

A tutor who’s focused on limitations can’t get the most out of his students.

9) What material should you practice with, official College Board SAT material, or proprietary material designed by a test prep company?

A skilled tutor will only use official College Board material. A student has to know exactly what’s going to be on the test. Pattern recognition is extremely important. The only way to do that is to use official material.

It’s fine to use material produced by a third party to remediate a lack of knowledge. If a student is weak in algebra or geometry, is sorely lacking in grammar, or needs additional practice in reading comprehension, a skilled tutor might use additional material to teach and practice the concepts.

However, if a tutor doesn’t use the College Board’s own material for the bulk of his work with your son or daughter, look for a different tutor.    

Final thoughts

Here’s what happens when a student takes his SAT score to the next level. He learns that he can do things he didn’t know he could do before. He sees the improvement in his homework and on his practice tests. He believes that his efforts are paying off and expects to do well. His confidence and self image as a student and a test taker grows, which motivates him to practice even harder. The process builds on itself.

A skilled tutor knows how it works. He knows it’s all about helping his students have an inner shift, the right frame of mind, and a positive attitude. Then the material covered on the test, the problem solving skills, and even the level of focus he needs to do really well become pretty easy to learn.

Use these questions as a guide. They’ll help you find the right tutor for you. When it comes to getting the highest SAT score possible, that makes all the difference.

Improving your credit score is very important and simple to do. Tip #1 Understand where credit scores come from.

If you are going to improve your credit score, then logic has it that you must understand what your credit score is and how it works. Without this information, you won’t be able to very effectively improve your score because you won’t understand how the things you do in daily life affect your score.

If you don’t understand how your credit score works, you will also be at the mercy of any company that tries to tell you how you can improve your score – on their terms and at their price.

In general, your credit score is a number that lets lenders know how much of a credit risk you are. The credit score is a number, usually between 300 and 850, that lets lenders know how well you are paying off your debts and how much of a credit risk you are.
In general, the higher your credit score, the better credit risk you make and the more likely you are to be given credit at great rates. Scores in the low 600s and below will often give you trouble in finding credit, while scores of 720 and above will generally give you the best interest rates out there. However, credit scores are a lot like GPAs or SAT scores from college days while they give others a quick snapshot of how you are doing, they are interpreted by people in different ways. Some lenders put more emphasis on credit scores than others.

Tip #2 Keep the contact information for credit bureaus handy.

The three major credit bureaus are important to contact if you are going to be repairing your credit score. The major three credit agencies can help you by sending you your credit report. If you find an error on your credit report, these are also the companies you must contact in order to correct the problem. You can easily contact these organizations by mail, telephone, or through the Internet

You may want to note this information wherever most of your financial information is kept so that you can easily contact the bureaus whenever you need to. Your local yellow pages should also have the contact information of these credit agencies as well.

Tip #3 Develop an action plan for dealing with your credit score.

Once you have your credit report and your credit score, you will be able to tell where you stand and where many of your problems lie. If you have a poor score, try to see in your credit report what could be causing the problem:

Do you have too much debt?
Too many unpaid bills?
Have you recently faced a major financial upset such as a bankruptcy?
Have you simply not had credit long enough to establish good credit?
Have you defaulted on a loan, failed to pay taxes, or recently been reported to a collection agency?

Tip #4 Pay your bills on time.

One of the best ways to improve your credit score is simply to pay your bills on time. This is absurdly simple but it works very well, because nothing shows lenders that you take debts seriously as much as a history of paying promptly. Every lender wants to be paid in full and on time.

If you pay all your bills on time then the odds are good that you will make the payments on a new debt on time, too, and that is certainly something every lender wants to see. Experts think that up to 35% of your credit score is based on your paying of bills on time, so this simple step is one of the easiest ways to boost your credit score.

Tip #5 Avoid excessive credit.

If you have many lines of credit or several huge debts, you make a worse credit risk because you are close to “overextending your credit.” This simply means that you may be taking on more credit than you can comfortably pay off. Even if you are making payments regularly now on existing bills, lenders know that you will have a harder time paying off your bills if your debt load grows too much.

The higher your debts the greater your monthly debt payments and so the higher the risk that you will eventually be able to repay your debts. Plus, statistical studies have shown that those with high debt loads have the hardest time financially when faced with a crisis such as a divorce, unemployment, or sudden illness.

Tip #6 Pay Down Your Debts

If you have a lot of debt, your credit score will suffer. Paying down your debts to a minimum will help elevate your credit score. For example, if you have a 00 limit on your credit card and you regularly carry a balance of 0, you will be a less attractive credit risk to lenders than someone who has the same credit card but carries a smaller balance of 0 or so. If you are serious about improving your credit score, then start with the largest debt you have and start paying it down so that you are using a less large percentage of your credit total.

In general, try to make sure that you use no more than 50% of your credit. That means that if your credit card has a limit of 00, make sure that you pay it down to at least 00 and work at carrying no larger balance. If possible, reduce the debt even more. If you can pay off your credit card in full each month, that is even better. What counts here is what percentage of your total credit limit you are using – the lower the better.

Tip #7 Have a range of credit types.

The types of credit you have are a factor in calculating your credit score. In general, lenders like to see that you are able to handle a range of credit types well. Having some form of personal credit such as credit cards and some larger types of credit such as a mortgage or auto loan and paying them off regularly is better than having only one type of credit.

Tip #8 Look out for identity theft.

Many people who are careful about paying bills on time and having minimal debts are shocked each year to find that they have low credit scores. In many cases, this happens as a result of identity theft. Identity theft is a type of crime in which people take your personal information and steal that information to pose as you in order to get access to your accounts or identity.

For example, someone with your PIN numbers can remove small amounts of money from your bank account each month or someone can use your name and personal information to get credit cards in your name and use those credit cards with no intention of paying back the money. You are stuck with the large debts and the poor credit score.

To prevent identity theft, always check your account statements carefully each month. Report any suspicious activity or any charges you don’t recognize at once. Also check your credit report regularly and immediately investigate any new credit accounts you do not recognize – this is the best way of detecting and acting on identity theft.

SAT Dreaded Sat Experimental Section

Officially the dreaded SAT experimental section is called the variable section. The first section is going to have essays that are 25 minutes long. The essay will then be followed by another six 25 minute sections. There are then two 20 minute sections and one 10 minute section.

One of those multiple choice 25 minute sections is going to be an experimental one. The people who administer the SAT need to test questions for future exams. This is to see if enough people get them right and/or wrong. So they use you as guinea pigs!

Since one of those sections is going to be experimental, it does not count toward your grade. It’s very difficult to pick out the experimental section, but I’ll give you a little bit of a tip:

If you get to a section that seems really weird or has questions that you haven’t seen before and it’s somehow different from the rest, it’s probably the experimental one. Don’t panic. Stay positive. Just tell yourself it’s the experimental one and move on.

Now, if you get three 25 minute critical reading sections, one of them will have been the experimental one. If you get three 25 minute math sections, one of them will be the experimental one. And if you get two 25 minute writing sections, you’ll know one of those will be the experimental section.

So it’s kind of hard to tell which one it is until you’re almost finished, but if you get to one that’s weird and totally throws you off, don’t think “Oh my gosh, the whole thing’s going down the tube now!” Tell yourself “You know what, that one was weird, that one was harder than I expected. It’s probably the experimental one”. Stay positive. Keep moving. That’s the way you maximize your SAT score.

Even though your standardized test scores aren’t the sole deciding factor in your application, you should still make every effort to ensure that your scores are up where they should be. Here are a few suggestions to help you improve your standardized test scores.

Take the PSAT. The PSAT is offered to juniors in high school during the month of October. The PSAT is just a Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test. It does not count toward your real SAT scores. The PSAT is optional, but you should really take it. It’s like a trial run that will familiarize you with the format and process of taking a standardized test. These tests take hours and have different sections, so you can practice your test taking stamina and see what subjects you score strongly in and what subjects you still need work on. Because it’s not the real thing, you’ll still have time to improve the areas that you need to work on, before you sit down and take the real test. There’s also a preliminary ACT test known as the pre-American College Test.

Consider getting a tutor, buying a study guide or enrolling in a test-taking course. The more you prepare for your standardized test, like the SAT or ACT (most colleges accept both), the less surprised you will be come test day, and the better you will be able to perform. These tests are marathons of scholastic output, and the more familiar you are with the format, the better you’ll be.

If you work well in a one-on-one environment, get a tutor before you take the test. If you learn better on your own, just buy a study book with sample tests and familiarize yourself with the format at your own pace. If you require a more structured approach, consider enrolling in a professional test taking course. These courses can be pretty expensive, but they can teach you valuable tricks and strategies that’ll give you noticeably better scores.

Get a good night’s rest before you take your test. Don’t show up late, don’t forget to eat a good meal and make sure you have a water bottle, some snacks, some headache medication and extra pencils handy. Practice controlling your stress. Try meditation, massage your temples or do whatever it takes to stay relaxed, calm and focused on the task at hand.

If you prepare properly, your standardized test taking experience will be a breeze. You will not be surprised or confused by particular sections or questions. If you invested your studying time accordingly, then you will not freak out. If you just have a crippling fear of multiple choice questions, that’s okay. Spend time developing your other application attributes (like grades, activities, an award winning personal essay, etc). Make every effort to improve your scores, and if your quantitative scores are not up to par, then overshadow them with your superior qualitative features.

SAT – Dread It Or Master It!

SAT evaluates critical thinking skills required in college courses. SAT is usually taken by high school juniors or seniors. SAT scores supplement secondary school records and are required to be admitted into many colleges.

SATs can be frightening, but with proper studying, discipline, and effort, they can be defeated without any pain. One of the best ways to practice for the SAT is to answer practice questions that are modeled after previous SATs. In general, the more practice questions you are able to answer, and the more you do answer, the better you’ll do on your SAT. Answering practice questions also leads you in the proper direction of study. Questions you are unable to answer let you know which topics you need to study more for.

Learning relevant vocabulary can help with the verbal section of the SAT. It is best to start vocabulary expansion well before the test, since it can take quite a lot of time to memorize new words and their meanings.

For the math in the SAT’s it is useful to review older mathematic material, as well as more recent curriculum. Some of the math on the SAT’s may be from early high school, so despite your more recent achievements, it’s a good idea to brush up on some of the old geometry and algebra.

Writing in advance is a well-advised idea. You can find or create SAT-type essays, and write them often. The more you write them, the better, and faster, you’ll become at writing.

Remember to be fresh and well fed before the test. Sleep plenty the night before, and have a good breakfast. Don’t cram study on the night prior to the exam, a late night will only hinder your performance. Arrive early to the test, and stay as calm as you can. SAT’s are long tests, and can be very monotonous. Getting nervous will only waste time.

Unlike tests in school, guessing answers on the multiple choice part of the SAT is not at all smart. If you guess incorrectly, you get more points deducted than if you were to leave the question blank. If you can narrow it down to two choices, the risk is 50/50, and is worth taking. If you have no idea what the question is about, and guess without removing any choice, you are more likely to be harmed than benefit.

There are many other tips and tricks in taking the SAT. These methods and bits of information can be found on various sites. Start studying early, study hard, study often and your results will show it!
