Hi and welcome to my blog,

I opened this blog to help anyone who is preparing for his SAT.
I remember myself when I started - I was so lost and in such a panic.
Luckily I got this great SAT guide that helped me a lot . So study hard and good luck!

Which College Should you Go To? Consult an Audio Book!

They seemed to be coming in the mail just about every day now. Letters from colleges all over the country, practically begging Timothy to visit their campus. All of his hard work was finally paying off. His 4.0 GPA all throughout high school, his perfect attendance, his honor society memberships and volunteerism. His high SAT scores, his national spelling bee wins. It was time for Timothy to reap the benefits!

Tim was receiving full scholarship offers from universities far and wide. Famous ones like Harvard and Yale, and ones he had never heard of, like Bethane-Cook and Gardner-Webb. Ones close to his home in New Jersey, like Princeton, and ones across the country in California, like San Diego State. He was visiting as many schools as his schedule possibly allowed him to, but it was all becoming too overwhelming. He needed some help deciding which college would be best for him!

With over 80 scholarship offers, Timmy decided to eliminate many of them right off the bat because he decided that he wanted to remain close to home. But that still left him with a list of 35 universities. He was doing some research online, when he came across an audio book for sale entitled How to Choose From the East Coasts Top Universities. This was exactly what he needed!

With a couple clicks of the mouse, and .99 charged on his credit card, Timmy was able to download the audio book straight onto his IPod. The audio book gave him an extremely detailed breakdown of every major college on the east coast. He learned which ones had strong history departments (that was his major), which ones had good volleyball teams, and which ones had the best campus life.

With the help of his audio book, Timmy chose Boston College – and it ended up being a perfect fit!

Hip-hop is hot, but it’s rarely been used as an educational tool until now. That’s the beauty of this radical new approach to studying vocabulary for standardized tests, which has been embraced by teachers and reviewers everywhere.  Instead of dry test guides that turn kids off, this method builds on our natural tendency to recall song lyrics by infusing difficult words, and their definitions, into irresistibly rhythmic music.  Now students can sing their way to better SAT and ACT scores!

PostHeaderIcon An Interview With Author Alan Rolnick About His New Book Landmark Status

An Interview With Author Alan Rolnick About His New Book Landmark Status

Landmark Status is a wonderfully funny book. Alan Rolnick uses Miami as the backdrop, and real estate as the weapon, to take the reader on a madcap journey that I can guarantee you will enjoy. When I put the put the book down and wrote the review, I just knew I wanted to talk to this guy. Anyone that can create the outlandish characters and amazingly funny scenes that I encountered in Landmark Status, has to be a pretty interesting person to chat with. Alan agreed to an interview.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I grew up in Newburgh, New York, a little city on the Hudson River. It was a beautiful place, old, proud and mostly unaware it had been rendered obsolete, cut loose from history’s moorings and set adrift by changing times. As a kid, I played in an abandoned brewery, took bus trips to Yankee Stadium and collected autographs from Hector Lopez and Moose Skowron (we never could get close enough to Mickey and Yogi). One time, a big kid sat on my hand for the entire bus ride, leaving corduroy-striped welts that lasted a week, but it really wasn’t his fault I couldn’t throw strikes.

In my teens, Beatlemania struck. My brother Paul and I decided to be rock stars, saving for guitars with car wash money, playing battles of the bands on the firemen’s picnic circuit. Paul was an outstanding guitarist and singer, destined to become an award-winning producer in New York. I wasn’t, but joined him there after graduating from Johns Hopkins with a major in Frisbee. Together, we made brilliant recordings that few heard, earned fifty bucks opening for Buffy St. Marie at Philharmonic Hall, and fortuitously took the equipment home instead of leaving it for next weekend’s gig at the Mercer Arts Center (which collapsed later that night).

Taking up journalism to put myself through my career, I became the guy at the New York Times who used computers to rank college and pro football teams. In 1983, the human pollsters awarded the Miami Hurricanes the National Championship, but my computer preferred Auburn. I’d been to Miami, fallen in love with the place, and decided it was time to go to law school (as my family had urged since I was six, usually with comments like, “he talks so much, he’s gonna be a lawyer”). The idea of living where balmy breezes caress you on the way out the door in December was particularly appealing.

Atoning for my computer’s mistake, I learned torts in locked classrooms and pulled all-nighters on the Law Review, winning induction into the Society of Wig and Robe (which, fortunately, required wearing neither). After twenty years of schooling, they put me on the day shift, working at one of Miami’s top legal sweatshops, representing robber barons in complex cases in federal court. Years later, I switched sides and began representing Davids against Goliaths in class actions.

Eventually, I decided it was time to throw a rope around the places I’d met and the people I’d been, and set out to write the kind of story I liked to read.

What is it with attorneys, are you all closet authors? In the past year I have read at least a dozen books by people in the profession, oh and they have all been very good. I have come to the conclusion that every lawyer must have a book in them.

Jeez, are there that many? Seriously, though, lawyers have to write to eat, and they’re trained to turn “fact patterns” into stories. Many of those stories are stranger than fiction, and they do make you yearn to come up with your own. Storytelling is crucial in litigation, where winning requires framing compelling themes, keeping witnesses in character, and distilling every legal argument to the pithiest possible paragraph. One classmate used to say he aimed for hearing the imagined words, “so, f___ you,” after every sentence of written argument. The unifying experience of all law students is fatigue, so I’m not surprised he’s forgotten he said it.

Where did the idea for Landmark Status come from?

Miami’s a frontier town, where outsiders easily become insiders, bellying up to the bar, tipping back a mojito and quickly learning there’s no secret handshake. I’d never been in such a place, and my legal training had dropped me off in its inner sanctum. There, I worked and tangled with kaleidoscopically colorful movers and shakers who were busy with Miami’s principal business, buying and selling the same dirt over and over again. I also got involved in litigating some of Miami’s more infamous Ponzi schemes. Having become a fan of Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen and Dave Barry, I wanted to do my part to honor this unique, subtropical nuthouse. It just had to involve a mad scramble for a piece of property, set against a backdrop of investment fraud. And it had to have a lawyer in the middle, doing real lawyering, citing real cases.

How long did it take you to bring this project to fruition?

Five years. It just seems longer.

I was very impressed with Landmark Status, I love the dark humor. Are you happy with the way it turned out?

First of all, thank you for the kind words. It’s always hard to know if the material is working! And yes, I’m very happy with the way the book turned out. Dark humor seems to grow wild here, a place so bright and beautiful it takes your breath away, even when random catastrophe is poised to strike, well, randomly. Miami is a city built by people on the run, from the cold, from persecution or personal dead ends, for whom making it to (and in) this magic city tends to foster a sort of self-absorbed sunstroke. It’s a narcissistic sense of safety and triumph you can feel merely by turning your face to the sun, until reality’s sudden impact shatters your daydream. This happens a lot in Landmark Status, starting with the wrecking ball in the first scene.

As the characters careen around Miami, where most folks are from somewhere else and ethnic politics dominates, they also collide with more serious questions about the American Creed and what’s happened to it in our fractious times. Everyone’s immigrant story gets told, but Delia, and to a lesser extent, Benjy and Raj, are the only ones thinking about what it all means. I really didn’t set out to explore Miami’s own origin story, how it came to be, who built it, and who came here when or why. But, as it unfolded, the story became a little more like “Hawaii” and a little less like “Hawaii Five-O” (tire-squealing car chase through Opa-locka notwithstanding). Looking back, I think giving the historical perspective makes it a richer story. It also means I don’t have to do it again.

Most authors style their characters after real people, so how much Benjy comes from Alan?

Benjy’s a lot more mellow than I am, for one thing. I’d like to think we share the almost unspoken inner sense of right and wrong that propels him, even though he makes light of it. I’m proud of him for that, because swimming against the tide he’s in isn’t easy. He also tends to withhold judgment a lot longer than I would, and suffers fools much more gladly than I do. He hates to lose, though, and will do what’s necessary to win, and we’re very alike in that respect. I enjoy his easygoing tolerance of the shenanigans of the connivers all around him. I have no idea where he got that. And that trust fund thing? Completely made up. All donations will be gratefully accepted.

Are we going to see more Benjy adventures in your next book?

Benjy will definitely be back. Once I figure out how to do this whole web publishing thing, clues to his whereabouts will be provided at my website (Alan Rolnick).

I remarked in my review that Landmark Status would transition nicely onto the silver screen, what are your thoughts?

It’s great to hear you suggest that. From the beginning, I’ve thought Landmark Status would make a smashing film (with apologies to the Spanish Inquisition sketch). I see pictures when I set a scene, and I’m looking forward to rendering them in pixels as well as words. Of course, destroying all those cars costs money, so we won’t be doing this one on a shoestring. Somewhere on my desk, there’s a legal pad devoted to casting choices and music cues. If it were a few years ago, I’d be chasing Dustin Hoffman to play Benjy, but I hope he’ll be interested in playing Benjy’s father Bernard, the legendary zoning lawyer and dealmaker.

I understand that you are currently working on a film project, can you tell us a little about that?

I’m Executive Producer of the film “Canvas,” which is in theaters now and will be out on DVD early next year. Produced by Sharon Lane (a force of nature, to whom I’m privileged to be married), it stars Joe Pantoliano, Marcia Gay Harden and Devon Gearhart. The film has won a number of festival awards, as well as praise for its realistic portrayal of a family struggling to cope with mental illness. Sharon fought for years to overcome studio apathy toward this indie film and first-time Director Joe Greco. We ultimately raised the money and shot it ourselves in South Florida during the legendary hurricane season of 2005, which almost blew us all out to sea. Sharon has another drama in development that also plays to her expertise in managing and working with young actors. I’m onboard for business and legal affairs, and just might Exec Produce this one, too. I’m angling for a comedy after that.

You obviously are a multi faceted person, lawyer, movie maker, and now author. What do you do with all your ‘spare’ time?

I honestly don’t have much spare time. I’m usually fighting to carve some out to keep up with our overbooked son, Max, who’s busy with school, piano lessons, soccer and baseball.

Alan, I want to thank you very much for taking the time to talk with me, and once again congratulations on creating a wonderful book, I hope that I see it on the NYT best seller list in the very near future.

Thanks, Simon. It was a pleasure.

PostHeaderIcon Book Review: Stories of a Recovering Fundamentalist – Understanding and Responding to Christian Absolutism by James C. Alexander

Book Review: Stories of a Recovering Fundamentalist – Understanding and Responding to Christian Absolutism by James C. Alexander

I have to admit that I was a little leery about this book, as a result it sat on the bottom of my pile. Problem was, eventually the pile dwindled, and only Stories Of A Recovering Fundamentalist remained. I was worried, having just moved into the very apex of the Bible Belt, I am sure that mere possession of a book with a title like this contravenes some arcane local by-law. It was with grim determination that I gritted my teeth, and launched into it!

Author James Alexander is a fascinating guy, an ordained minister, a PhD, and a thoroughly entertaining and educated writer. At under 200 pages this is not the weighty tome designed to replace sleeping pills, but a lively discussion that covers a huge spectrum concerning religion today, its roots, and maybe most interestingly the cause and effect on society, politics, education, and just about every other facet of life.

The problem with Fundamentalism James Alexander explains is the intransigence with which it is applied. To blindly obey and not to question makes no sense. Critical thinking is a hugely important part of human existence, yet Fundamentalism leaves no space for such ideas. What is written in the bible, or the Koran, is to be taken at face value, more importantly it is not to be questioned. When an interpretation is required it will be supplied by the ‘Adults’ of the church, the mere believer, only needs only to believe, not to think. Maybe this is the major reason that my trips to church only revolve around Births, Marriages, and (as I get older), an increasing number of deaths.

I suspect that James Alexander and I have quite a lot in common. I do not seek the truth, I seek the wisdom to make my own decision as to what that truth might be. I will not be bullied in this process.

James readily admits that when the going gets tough, even he has the urge to retreat into the safe cocoon that fundamental teachings offer. It is so much easier to take the well trodden path, than hack your way through the jungle. But it is that hacking process that offers the learning process, don’t be confused with this sentiment, this is not re-inventing the wheel. This is discovering the wheel that suits you best.

This is not your regular dry and insipid look at religion, this is new and fun. Early on in the book James talks a little about his life as a child. It was not the happiest of situations, but he found solace in the local children’s Bible club. It was the leader of this group that started to take James to church. As he describes it, the Bible Club Lady started taking him to church, but he could not understand why it was always the same church. Each time they traveled they passed by several other churches. In what has to one of the funniest dialogs I have read in a while, James asks her “What about THAT Church?” The answer apparently was always the same.

No. Not that one. They baptize babies.
No. That one doesn’t use the King James Bible.
That one? Not a chance! They speak in tongues.
That place!!! You must be kidding! Why, Jimmy, that’s a Catholic Church! They pray to statues, and the pope is the Antichrist. Don’t ever go in one of those churches!

You just have to love such dialog!

One of the concepts that the author establishes early on,is Logos and Mythos. Hardly new concepts, but ones that are often misunderstood, or not understood at all. In layman’s terms, logic and mythology. Both have a valid place in religion, and both have the same standing when it comes to belief. Both offer opportunities to be right, it is a question of how you use this information.

Alexander introduces a term that I had not heard before ‘The Flat Bible’. In a nutshell treating the Bible as flat, means giving the same level of importance to every section. This lends to many seeming contradictions in teaching. However if you treat the Bible as having hills and valleys a much more balanced text is revealed. In support of this notion the author includes an essay that he wrote some years ago, if you read nothing more than this essay out of the book you will gain much understanding.

Christian fundamentalism has been around as long as Christianity itself, however the modern version has its roots in the 1920′s and specifically the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, which pitted creationists against evolutionists. The light bulb flickered on again briefly in the 70′s, and now in the first decade of this century it is burning brightly. The movement has found a willing and able ally in segments of the government. As James Alexander points out, G. W. Bush’s approval ratings are at an all time low, and who are those that are sticking so doggedly to him? The Christian Right, during his time in office he has done much to further their agenda.

There are so many facets to Stories Of A Recovering Fundamentalist that I could indeed write a book about the book! Oops, looking at the length of this review, I just have!

Great book, and well worth the price of admission. You can get your copy from Amazon.

PostHeaderIcon Book Marketing – Raise your Prices and Sell More? Here’s How!

Book Marketing – Raise your Prices and Sell More? Here’s How!

It sounds counterintuitive. Raise the price of your product and sell more of it. But it’s what happened to John Harricharan. (And you can do this too.)

John wrote a book called PowerPause. PowerPause is an eBook or a digital book, which means it can be downloaded directly from the Internet. Nothing is shipped or printed – it’s a PDF file.

John started with just a thought – what is my product? He then realized he was his product.

John is an outstanding businessman, lecturer and author, but he also knows what it’s like to experience failure as well as success. He takes his own experiences and incorporates them into his lectures and books, which result in inspiring tales of strength, courage and character.

While lecturing and teaching around the world, John spoke of three principles to bring wealth, success and happiness. These principles evolved in a little eBook called PowerPause. Then the magic started.

John started selling his eBook online for . He sold one book.

The he decided to ask for it, just for the heck of it. He sold two books. At he sold a few more. Finally, when he hit , the book started selling well, and to date he’s sold more than 0,000 worth of downloads.

One of the funny things is John initially marketed his books to the self-help audience, but it was the Internet marketers who ended up buying it. We never know where the road will take us. John went from the self-help, spiritual community to the Internet marketing community. Then he found a few champions in the marketplace and he had a best seller.

PowerPause is the perfect example of repurposing. John took his lectures and repurposed them into an eBook. He then created a printed version, which he mails to people for 9. Then he created a user’s manual, which is basically a guide telling people how to do what’s in the book. Repurposed again, he sat down one weekend and read the book on audio and made it available online.

John speaks at seminars about PowerPause. He offers an eClass on PowerPause. At his website, www.PowerPauseSecrets.com, he offers special bonuses, including PowerPause – The Missing Chapters, The PowerPause Q&A (PDF and audio file) and PowerPause – Official Guide (PDF and audio file). And soon he will be coming out with a hard copy of PowerPause.

Imagine if John gave up when is his eBook didn’t sell. Imagine if he stopped digging in the gold mine. In this case, it’s a platinum mine. Instead of giving up after the first sale, John raised the price and then repurposed, repurposed, repurposed.

You can do the same thing with any book or idea. One concept can lead to other products, other information, other lectures and other repurposing, all from one idea. And with each repurposing there is more profit.

Publishing a book of poetry

The journey usually starts with a friend or family members telling you maybe you should get your work of poetry publish because it is so good. You probably said, “I don’t think my work of poetry is good enough for others to read. I only write to share with friends.” Well, maybe it was not quite like that, but usually we always start by sharing our work with friends and families. As time passed, you probably continued sharing your poetry and you continue to hear the praise coming from their lips about how good your poetry is. You convinced yourself maybe it would not be a bad idea to at least try to see if anyone would give you an opportunity and publish your work.

This is probably where your journey into the dark side of publishing started. Everyone in the publishing industry turns your work down. The letters are saying things such as: “that it’s not what we are looking for right now.” Your self-esteem stumble and all your friends and family who always praise you continued with their encouragements, but you know your chances are close to zero on getting a major publishing house to publish you. Then you start to hear about self-publishing and went to Google to locate a self-publishing company to help bring your dream to realty. The sales representative tells you how you can create your own book and own the rights to your work and the royalty will better than industry average. The only thing is, you would have to share in the cost of the publishing.

You agree and ,200 later you have your book. You went to all your friends and most him purchase a copy, though it was way over price, but they did it to support you. After you sold your friends a few of your poetry books, you sat around waiting for the self-publisher’s website to help you generate sales, until they told you have to pay more money if you want a promotional campaign for your book. Now you realized you did not even break even from the first ,200 you spent; now they want you to pay more money. If you are smart you would stop. Today, I want you to know you are not alone.

My name is Gamelz and here at www.ipublishabook.com you will get a chance to read all of my books for fre. I always wanted to write and publish books just like you, but never realize the challenge I would face trying to get a publisher to look at my manuscript. I went the route you always hear a writer should not go, and that was to self-publish. I write short-stories and poetry. I realized this genre has very little appeal to book publishers because they are not able to generate a profit from that type of publishing. Once my book came from the printing company, I realized very quickly I was not going to generate huge sales and that I needed to share it with others. So, I decided to create this website www, ipublishabook.com and offer the book for free to those who want to read it.

I did not write to make money. I wrote it because I enjoy writing and wanted to share it with others. This site www.ipublishabook.com will include my entire writing portfolio, again, for free. As an aspiring writer, I am always looking to be part of a new and exciting project. Please take a look around to see my site www.ipublishabook.com and read my work and my distinctive style of writing and let me know what you think about www.ipublishabook.com I would appreciate it very much. I would conclude by saying for you not to give up on your dream to publish poetry or any other style of writing; it is a wonderful feeling to share your publish work.

PostHeaderIcon Burning A Downloadable Audio Book To CD

Burning A Downloadable Audio Book To CD

You can only burn (or copy/write) a downloadable audio book to a CD if either it is for your own use, or you have copyright over the contents.

Any audio book purchased for your own entertainment or enjoyment is normally subject to copyright and cannot be copied other than for your own use. Violating this law can get you into serious copyright infringement problems and potentially subject to very substantial fines or even imprisonment.

Downloadable audio books are still under copyright, even after paying to download them.

The only instance where audio books (or other publications) are no longer under copyright is when the authors or translators have died over 70 years ago. There are also certain publications by government that are not under copyright.

The rule of “only for personal use” is however still ultimate when it comes to burning any downloadable audio book to CD or any other such formats.

There are even a small number of audio book publishers that won’t allow their audio books to be copied to CD. Audio book publishers can and sometimes do disable the ability to burn the files to CD.

Be sure that your audio book publishers allow copying for personal use: do check it out before going ahead to buy.

Some audio books last for several hours so if you wish to burning your audio books to CD, you will often need more than one CD per audio book. For example, an audio book of about 10 hours can take as many as 7 CDs.

That being said below are the steps you need to take to burn (or copy) any downloadable audio book into CD:

NOTE: The below instructions are based on Windows Media Player Version 10. If you are using an older version, you can download the latest version from Microsoft’s website. Here’s the exact link -

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download

First, the computer you want to use to burn the audio book to CD must be equipped with a recordable CD drive and CD-burning software.

It is this CD-burning software that burns the audio book to the CD using the recordable CD drive.

Second, play the audio book on Windows Media Player. Ensure that you choose “Full Mode” when doing this, not “Skin Mode”.

Third, you will notice the “now playing” information displayed on the right-hand side of your Windows Media Player. If it isn’t displayed, you should click the “Restore the Video and Visualization Pane” button to display it.

Fourth, you can now click the “Library” tab. You will notice the “Start Burn” button displayed.

Maximize Your Time with Audio Books

In our world today we always seem to be busy. Finding time to relax with a good book is getting harder and harder. Audio Books are a great way to make some of the more mundane tasks of your day more enjoyable.

How many times have you been driving and had to turn your radio off or at least right down so you would not have to listen to a song you hate? Other times you just want something different. Listening to a new novel by your favorite author is will make sitting in traffic much easier to bear.

For those of you who use public transport, reading could be difficult sometimes. I know myself that reading whilst in motion often made be dizzy and this is a common complaint or trying to hold a book whilst be jostled by other commuters, poor lighting and jerking motions of bus or train also made concentration an almost impossible task. Listening to an audio book on a plane is a wonderful way to relax, just put your headphones on, recline your seat, close your eyes and listen whilst the speaker takes you on another journey.

Maybe you are one of those people who want to read but can’t find the time, when asked by a friend have you read a certain book have you heard yourself replying “When would I have time to read?” or have you sat down to read only to find yourself looking at the windows which badly needed cleaning or remembering you have to pick up the dry cleaning. Imagine listen to those books whilst you cooked the dinner, exercised on the treadmill, vacuumed the living room, etc.

These audios are also a great way of encouraging the children to open their minds with books to suit all age groups in many fiction genres including animal, adventure, mystery and comedy etc. There are also educational books on history, geography, etc., which can stimulate the inquiring mind.

Adults can enjoy novels of all genres, nonfiction on a multitude of topics and adult educational themes including interesting topics for today such as our changing environment, news items, politic, basically anything that takes your interest or full tutorials on selected topics. All of these books can be obtained in many different languages. Audio books can be borrowed from your local library, bought at large book stores and some music shops. A search of the internet will give you unlimited suppliers of these books and links to sites where you can download instantly. Audio books can be used in your car CD player, mp3s or downloaded from the internet to your iPod.

Whether you listen to general nonfiction, educational material or a fiction novel of your choice you will have found a wonderful way of using your time not only efficiently but also turning the boring parts of your day into a more enjoyable times. Audio books are becoming more widely used so when you see the person sitting next to you smiling it could be they enjoying a great story.
