The days the films have eclipsed the James Bond books in terms of popularity and it is easy to forget that it all began with Ian Fleming.

Fleming used the experience he gained in Naval Intelligence during the Second World War and his flair with words, honed as a newspaperman, to great effect when he sat down at his winter hideaway in Jamaica started to write a spy novel. The first James Bond book was “Casino Royale” and its success in the United Kingdom paved the way for further adventures featuring James Bond.

Having gained success with this first book, Ian Fleming sat down and produced, without fail, a new James Bond book each year until he died at the early age of 56 from a heart attack brought on by heavy smoking and drinking.

Most of the James Bond books are straightforward adventure novels, but he did vary from the formula on a couple of occasions. The first was with “For Your Eyes Only”, which included five short stories. Although three of them encapsulate an entire James Bond adventure in a few pages, two of the stories are quite different in nature and readers at the time, used to a new full-length novel each year, voiced their disapproval. However, it did allow Fleming to stretch his imagination slightly to see what else he was capable of producing.

After “For Your Eyes Only”, Fleming tried another experiment, this time with “The Spy Who Loved Me”. Rather than a traditional James Bond adventure, it was told from the point of view of the Bond girl and James Bond hardly appeared at all.

Although it proved to be unsatisfactory to readers of the time, it does at least provide something rather different from the pen of Ian Fleming and he returned to full-length novels – only after his death was “Octopussy & The Living Daylights” published, another volume of short stories. “The Living Daylights” is particularly effective as a James Bond adventure, and works extremely well.

Book nominated for “Outstanding Literary Work of the Year”

just in time for Autism Awareness Month

There Are No Words, a novel that has already been honored as “Outstanding Book For Young People With Disabilities” by IBBY and won runner-up at the Nashville Book Festival, has been nominated for the Autism Society’s coveted “Outstanding Literary Work of the Year.”

The award is given annually to individuals in recognition of their commitment to the autism community. Awards are announced each year at the Autism Society’s Annual Meeting. This year the meeting will be July 7-10, 2010, in Dallas, TX.

Respected autism speaker and author Stephen Shore, who wrote Understanding Autism for Dummies, called the book “A fascinating entry in the world of autism through an endearing character going back into time to rescue her grandfather’s best friend. In addition to being a great piece of writing, this book is for anyone wanting to learn more about autism from an ‘inside’ view.”

The Midwest Book Review says, “The most terrifying future is a future you cannot change. There Are No Words tells the story of a mute girl who finds herself with a voice, but sent back decades ago. With the knowledge of a train wreck that will kill one of her grandfather’s friends, Jaxon MacKenzie finds herself in a time before said accident. Heidi Cortner Boiesen, of the IBBY Documentation Centre in Norway said, “[There Are No Words] is a beautiful, genuine story about love and friendship, and I think [it has] captured the true hyper sensitivity to touch and sounds that so many autistic persons experience.”

There Are No Words has earned five stars from The Feathered Quill and continues to score positive reviews from both readers, educators and the autism community alike.

Author Mary Calhoun Brown said, “I’ve been having such a great time visiting with classrooms all over the place. I’ve given creative writing workshops and answered questions at author visits. The response from readers has been overwhelming. I’m just so happy to have given breath to these characters. I had no idea how much a hero like Jaxon was needed.”

 The autism classroom at Enslow Middle School have read There Are No Words and have invited Brown to visit and answer their questions Apr. 21, 2010. Brown will be signing There Are No Words at the Ohio River Festival of Books Sat. Apr. 10, from 10 to 6 at the Cabell County (WV) Public Library. She will be speaking and signing at the Southern Kentucky Book Festival Sat. Apr. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bowling Green, KY. Why do e-books take longer to read?

Amazon recently announced that Kindle sales have tripled and twice as many e-books are selling as their hardcover counterparts. iPad appears set to become a strong contender in the electronic book market and so does Barnes & Noble with the Nook.

E-books have substantially improved since the days of reading from a computer monitor. Nevertheless, people still prefer to curl up to a real book. Not a reader.

The general consensus among consumers is that reading electronic books is difficult, which has kept sales down over the last several years. Some people refuse to read ebooks because the strain to read print against a backlit screen is a daunting task, not a pleasurable past time.

Nielsen Norman Group, a usability consulting firm, conducted a study suggesting that e-books take more time to read than print. Nielsen timed twenty-four participants while they read various short stories by Ernest Hemingway. They read from print, the Kindle, an iPad, and a PC.

A Nielsen spokesperson stated that during the test, “participants simply sat quietly and read, the way most people do at home. We provided comfortable easy chairs to emulate the typical reading experience with a tablet.”

When reading from the PC, however, participants sat at a computer, similar to an office setting.

The test results showed that even though the users ranked their overall satisfaction higher with e-readers than hardbound books, they read the books faster.

Supporting data concluded that, “The iPad measured at 6.2% lower reading speed than the printed book, whereas the Kindle measured at 10.7% slower than print.”

Participants liked using the e-readers even though they did admit they felt more relaxed reading printed books. They also claimed the iPad felt heavy and they disliked Kindle’s grey-on-gray screen.

Being able to read comfortable was a key factor in the participants’ ability to concentrate.

Another issue of reading impediment, not brought up in the study, could be that the general design of e-readers display only one page at a time. When reading a book with a two page view, readers have grown accustomed to letting their eyes scan ahead, thereby speeding up the reading process.

The essential problem may be that people are simply used to reading real books and haven’t yet adapted to digital alternatives.

Whatever the reason behind e-book’s reading barrier, publishers and tech corporations will hopefully use this information to improve e-readers and create an enjoyable reading experience that better simulates what we are already used to.

Have you heard, “Practice makes man perfect” You cannot learn how to play cricket, play keyboard by reading a book and not actually practicing it, nor will you be able to master SAT without practice. If you don’t practice, then you will not actually learn how to apply the strategies you learn. We are here with Free Algebra practice questions. Practice also leads us in to the next necessary item to master the SAT.

Right now we will explain you the term Algebraic Expressions and manipulation in SAT math.

Most of the questions on SAT math test may not include numbers at all. These questions will test your knowledge of basic algebraic concepts. So you must be confident and comfortable with such questions and applying algebraic concepts to problem solving.

Numbers and variable come together to do multiplication or division are called TERMS. And an Algebraic expression is collection of terms combined by addition, subtraction, or both in which letters or variables are used to represent numbers.

For example, like(same) term can be combined :

                                                3X + 4 X = 7X

                                (a + 2) (a – 5) = a2 – 5a + 2a – 10

                                                a2 – 3a – 10

                                                12ab ÷ 2b = 6a

Some algebraic exponents are : a3 = a X a X a

                                                a-5 =  1/a X 1/a X 1/a X 1/a X 1/a

                                                x0 = 1

                                                a x/y = y √ax = (y √a)x

                                                X1/2 = √X

When multiplying expressions with the same base you can add exponents. Same rule will apply for negative exponents.

                a2 X a3 = (a X a ) (a X a X a) = a5

                ya X yb = ya+b                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             y4 X y -2 = (y X y X y X y) (1/y X 1/y ) = y2

When dividing expressions with the same base you have to subtract exponents.

                                a5 / a2  = (a X a X a X a X a) (1/a X 1/a) = a3

Multiply exponents when a number raised to an exponent is raised to a second exponent.

                (a 2)3 = a 2 X 3 = a6

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is a standardized, multiple-choice test, that is used by most U.S. colleges and universities for admissions into undergraduate/bachelor’s programs, placement decisions and sometimes as a measure of eligibility for scholarship.  It is used primarily in the US but also in the United Kingdom and Singapore.

In India the test is conducted by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in the months of October, November, December, January, May and June (6 times every year).

The SAT has ten sections. This is divided as under –
Section 1 – always a twenty five minutes essay
Section 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 – 25 minutes each
Sections 8 and 9 – 20 minutes each
Section 10 – always a ten minute section of multiple-choice questions.
While the format for the first and the last section is defined, sections 2 through nine vary and deal with mathematics, critical reading, and writing in no particular order. In fact, adjacent test takers might have test books which are entirely different in the order of their content.

It is a 3 hours and 45 minutes exam. The weightage for different subjects is as under –

Writing: 200-800
Mathematics: 200-800
Critical Reading: 200-800
Total marks are 2400. It is a 3:45 hrs exam. With breaks, the test takes over 4 hours to administer.

There is also a non scoring section of 25 minutes. This section is a common practice of test development and is used to ensure validity and fairness. It can be from one of three areas mentioned above or multiple choice and is mainly used to test run future editions of the SAT.  

On the face of it, SAT seems like a test of one’s verbal and mathematical knowledge. However, it is more about performing under pressure of an examination environment and needs an effective combination of high accuracy and good speed. This is an acquired skill and takes much more than learning the syllabus till class ten. It needs focused and informed practice and the use of strategies and techniques to build accuracy and speed.

The SAT is based on fundamental knowledge of school syllabus till the 10th Standard and tests the following three areas -

Writing
Critical Reading
Mathematics

When it comes down to getting accepted into college, nothing matters as much as the SAT. Grades and GPA vary from school to school, as do extracurricular activities. The SAT, however, is standardized, and is universally used to sift who will be accepted from those who will be rejected.

Studying for the SAT is a long-term process that should begin in a student’s sophomore year when they take the PSAT. Not only does this make them automatically eligible for National Merit Scholar, but it gives a valuable score report showing strengths, weaknesses, and projected scores. From here, decide what you need to work on.

For a few months, work just on vocabulary. It will help on both the critical reading sections and the Essay in the writing section. For those good at math, vocabulary will be the difference between a 2000 and a 2200.

Keep taking practice tests as you get closer to your SAT test date. The SAT, remember, is standardized, so you will see the same questions on the real thing. This makes taking practice tests well worth your time. You can buy a book, or find some free online (I recommend http://sat.testfrenzy.com). This website reviews free SAT study material available online and ranks the best web sites by their ease of use, quality of test, and helpfulness as an education resource. There are 14 full SAT Tests reviewed, along with 1,300 Critical Reading questions, 940 Writing questions, and 1,610 Math questions.

With each practice test, you’ll find yourself becoming more and more familiar with the questions, and you’ll find it easier to concentrate for 4 hours at a time. Be sure to review the questions you miss. If you need help in a particular category, take quizzes only on that topic. One common area for improvement is reading comprehension and passage analysis. You can find these tests all over the internet, like at English AP websites. Don’t forget your teachers too! Many school teachers keep extra resources they would be glad to help you with. And seeing your determination may help later when you have an 89.9% and they’re choosing between giving you an A or a B in the class.

Practice tests may be long and boring, but if they’re free and get you into the college of your choice, they are completely worth it.

If you take on freelance work on the side, or if that’s your main source of income, you must have felt how few the hours are in a day; especially if you’ve got overlapping deadlines. To do manage your work, play, and rest hours, you simply need an appointment book. It doesn’t have to be a fancy PDA, it could be just an appointment calendar you can buy at office supply shops. The aim is to clear your head of worries and to see the blocks of days in a week, maybe on a folder-sized appointment calendar, or a big one on the wall above your computer.

Chances are you already have one of those flip-over calendars on your work table, or one of those pull-down-today’s-date calendars on your wall. The problem with them is that either you can’t write on the blocks of days (the space is too small), or they only tell you the date today. You need space to write on your appointment book.

So, you have to get the kind that displays the calendar days in blocks, with space roomy enough to accommodate your handwriting. That way, you can see the blocks of days to come, and the days when you’ve been swamped with work, but you finished them. It’s a visual source of accomplishment to have a good appointment book.

If you hold on to a nine-to-five job, and afterwards do some side jobs, not only do you have reduced time for rest and family, but you feel bad about the extra work you’re not, but should be, doing. An appointment calendar on your wall can reduce your stress.

One way to get your worries out of your head is to write them on paper, in different sheets of paper, divided into categories. Like ‘home,’ ‘hobby,’ ‘Amanda (client’s name), and so on. That way you can pick up a piece and immediately you just focus on thoughts and worries connected with that category, with that piece of paper you’re holding.

You can then write down your actionable items on that paper, and when you think you can do them. The when and that paper’s name tag is crucial, because if that ‘Amanda’ client tag is going into your appointment calendar in the form of a neon yellow post it, you had better have that ‘Amanda’ piece of paper with your plans.

Do you see how this getting stuff done is possible with an appointment book, or an appointment calendar? If you can write deadlines on the blocks of days, you can mentally judge (because you can see the sequence of days and the load of work contained) when to adjust or reallocate hours (or if you have to ask the client for an extension). Also, since you have sheets of papers with category tags, you just have to synch up the contents of the papers and the dates when you devote time for them. With an organized appointment book, you’re ahead of your work and deadlines. This way, you won’t get as stressed as when you simply sat down and worried about deadlines.

To do manage your work, play, and rest hours, you simply need an appointment book. It doesn’t have to be a fancy PDA, it could be just an appointment calendar you can buy at office supply shops. The aim is to clear your head of worries and to see the blocks of days in a week, maybe on a folder-sized appointment calendar, or a big one on the wall above your computer.

Chances are you already have one of those flip-over calendars on your work table, or one of those pull-down-today’s-date calendars on your wall. The problem with them is that either you can’t write on the blocks of days (the space is too small), or they only tell you the date today. You need space to write on your appointment book.

So, you have to get the kind that displays the calendar days in blocks, with space roomy enough to accommodate your handwriting. That way, you can see the blocks of days to come, and the days when you’ve been swamped with work, but you finished them. It’s a visual source of accomplishment to have a good appointment book.

If you hold on to a nine-to-five job, and afterwards do some side jobs, not only do you have reduced time for rest and family, but you feel bad about the extra work you’re not, but should be, doing. An appointment calendar on your wall can reduce your stress.

One way to get your worries out of your head is to write them on paper, in different sheets of paper, divided into categories. Like ‘home,’ ‘hobby,’ ‘Amanda (client’s name), and so on. That way you can pick up a piece and immediately you just focus on thoughts and worries connected with that category, with that piece of paper you’re holding.

You can then write down your actionable items on that paper, and when you think you can do them. The when and that paper’s name tag is crucial, because if that ‘Amanda’ client tag is going into your appointment calendar in the form of a neon yellow post it, you had better have that ‘Amanda’ piece of paper with your plans.

Do you see how this getting stuff done is possible with an appointment book, or an appointment calendar? If you can write deadlines on the blocks of days, you can mentally judge (because you can see the sequence of days and the load of work contained) when to adjust or reallocate hours (or if you have to ask the client for an extension). Also, since you have sheets of papers with category tags, you just have to synch up the contents of the papers and the dates when you devote time for them. With an organized appointment book, you’re ahead of your work and deadlines. This way, you won’t get as stressed as when you simply sat down and worried about deadlines.

Are You not Selling Used Books?

After watching John Stossel’s Stupid in America, I’ve come to the conclusion that entrepreneurship, especially starting a home or small business, is discouraged in American public schools.

Why are teachers discouraging our children from learning the principles and action needed to start home businesses? From the research I’ve done, I believe it’s because they want a dumped down population that’s ignorant of monetary and fiscal policies, and how to handle their money.

Almost everyone in the 20th and 21st centuries has gone to high school and remembers those confusing years. Dissent was always discouraged; and anything other than going to college and working for somebody else was the only true path in life according to our higher ups in the school system. Inventing and coming up with new and interesting ideas, it seemed to me, was frowned upon as well. Being free and independent individuals was also looked down on from the teachers and bureaucrats that ran the school. You couldn’t go to the restroom unless you raised your hand and asked, you couldn’t do the math work your way (even if you got the right answer!), and at least in my school, we were all forced to follow a certain dress code. It also seemed to me that everything we did in high school was just a test for what was coming next, but whatever came next was always just another test! I seriously didn’t feel prepared for life after high school.

That’s because they wanted us to be obedient, non-determined workers with no goals or ambition. If a country has a non-questioning, non-thinking population, they can get away with anything they want and keep the entire country in a stupefied daze (that’s what happens when you live paycheck to paycheck). Self-help Book Teaches Old Lady Some New Tricks!

Helen was extremely old-fashioned. She was so set in her ways that her children and even grandchildren teased her about it. You know those old rotary phones that you have to dial by sticking your finger into a little wheel and spinning it around? Helen still used one! And she still used a record player from the 50s to listen to music! Helen’s family and friends would joke about her probably having a horse and buggy in the garage to get to the grocery store. 86
