Book nominated for “Outstanding Literary Work of the Year”
just in time for Autism Awareness Month
There Are No Words, a novel that has already been honored as “Outstanding Book For Young People With Disabilities” by IBBY and won runner-up at the Nashville Book Festival, has been nominated for the Autism Society’s coveted “Outstanding Literary Work of the Year.”
The award is given annually to individuals in recognition of their commitment to the autism community. Awards are announced each year at the Autism Society’s Annual Meeting. This year the meeting will be July 7-10, 2010, in Dallas, TX.
Respected autism speaker and author Stephen Shore, who wrote Understanding Autism for Dummies, called the book “A fascinating entry in the world of autism through an endearing character going back into time to rescue her grandfather’s best friend. In addition to being a great piece of writing, this book is for anyone wanting to learn more about autism from an ‘inside’ view.”
The Midwest Book Review says, “The most terrifying future is a future you cannot change. There Are No Words tells the story of a mute girl who finds herself with a voice, but sent back decades ago. With the knowledge of a train wreck that will kill one of her grandfather’s friends, Jaxon MacKenzie finds herself in a time before said accident. But a twelve year old girl can’t do much to stop a government train…can she? There Are No Words is a charming story of determination and friendship, highly recommended.”
Heidi Cortner Boiesen, of the IBBY Documentation Centre in Norway said, “[There Are No Words] is a beautiful, genuine story about love and friendship, and I think [it has] captured the true hyper sensitivity to touch and sounds that so many autistic persons experience.”
Charline Ratcliff at Rebecca’s Reads responds, “I give high praise to the author, Mary Calhoun Brown, for being able to help me understand and experience life in a way that an autistic child might. How many times do we overlook or simplify what Autism is simply because we do not understand it or have never experienced its effects in our lives? How frustrating it must be to be that child. To have to wonder about life every day and yet never have any answers to your questions.”
There Are No Words has earned five stars from The Feathered Quill and continues to score positive reviews from both readers, educators and the autism community alike.
Author Mary Calhoun Brown said, “I’ve been having such a great time visiting with classrooms all over the place. I’ve given creative writing workshops and answered questions at author visits. The response from readers has been overwhelming. I’m just so happy to have given breath to these characters. I had no idea how much a hero like Jaxon was needed.”
In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Brown will donate from each book sold from her web site or personal visits to autism charities. The web address is http://shop.marycalhounbrown.com. Members of the autism community who would like to nominate their group to receive funds may contact Brown at www.marycalhounbrown.com.
The autism classroom at Enslow Middle School have read There Are No Words and have invited Brown to visit and answer their questions Apr. 21, 2010. Brown said, “I am so excited to visit Enslow Middle School. I understand they have some strong opinions about There Are No Words. I can’t wait to hear them.”
Brown will be signing There Are No Words at the Ohio River Festival of Books Sat. Apr. 10, from 10 to 6 at the Cabell County (WV) Public Library. She will be speaking and signing at the Southern Kentucky Book Festival Sat. Apr. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bowling Green, KY. More information about the author’s schedule is available from her web site.
