Testing/Schmesting Part 1: SAT Subject Tests

So, you’ve finished taking the SAT (or the ACT), have received the scores you want’at least you’re not planning to take it again’and now you’re ready to go through the rest of the application process without worrying any more about tests. Right! Well, maybe. Before you relax, let’s talk about Subject Tests.

WHAT ARE SUBJECT TESTS?

Subject Tests are exactly as they sound; tests that focus on a specific subject. The College Board offers twenty of these tests that are broken down into five different content areas: English, History, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Languages. There are twelve tests covering the French, German, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Latin and Spanish languages. You can also take “listening” tests for Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish and Korean. Like the SAT’s, the scores for each subject test are reported on a scale from 200 to 800.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THEM?

How do you know if you have to take Subject Tests? Well, that depends on the test requirements of the colleges and universities to which you are applying. Some colleges require no Subject Tests, others require two, and a couple require three.

So how do you know whether or not to take one, two, three or none at all? There are a number of ways: individual college admission websites are one source and The Common Application website (if the school uses The Common App) is another. Two other websites that offer that information are:

Ivy West

http://test-prep.ivywest.com/sat-subject-test-score.aspx

Compass Education Group

http://www.compassprep.com/admissions_req_subjects.aspx

WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKEN SUBJECT TESTS?

So if I find out that I have to take Subject Tests for some of the universities I’m applying to, when should I take them? Here are a couple of tips: If you are taking an AP class whose content matches a Subject Test, then take the Subject Test during the College Board May or June test date, after you have taken the AP Test. For example, if you’ve taken an AP World History class, then take the Subject Test in History. You’ll be at the top of your form and will probably need very little additional preparation. Otherwise, take Subject Tests in course areas in which you have excelled.

INFO ABOUT SUBJECT TEST

You can find a lot of very useful information about Subject Tests on the College Board website at

http://professionals.collegeboard.com/testing/sat-subject/about

Here are some generally useful pieces of advice:

1. November is the only date when Language with Listening Tests are offered

2. If you’re a senior and plan to apply Early Decision or Early Action, you need to take any required Subject Tests by October test date.

3. To avoid getting overwhelmed during first semester of your senior year, try to get all of your Subject Testing completed by the end of your junior year.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS RE SUBJECT TESTS

Can I take a subject test and not report it?

It used to be that you determined which schools, if any, got the results of your Subject Tests, but as of fall 2002, all Subject Test scores are automatically displayed on your College Board test report with your SAT scores. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can retake a Subject Test if you don’t feel you’ve done as well as you like.

How well do I have to do on the subject tests?

Well, the distribution of scores is similar to the regular SAT’s. If you’re applying to an Ivy League or other very selective schools, they like to see test scores in the 700′s. Less selective schools look for scores in the 600′s, and even moderately selective schools want to see test scores in the 500 range.

Should I prepare for the subject tests

Absolutely! Among college admissions professionals, there is general consensus that preparing for Subject Tests is a good idea. Since these tests are based on specific content, you really can study for them. More importantly, there is a positive correlation between how much you study and how well you do on the test.

Knowing what to do, when and how makes it more likely that you are going to hit a homerun with Subject Tests! And that can only help you with your college admissions.

PostHeaderIcon 3 Easy SAT Writing Tips

3 Easy SAT Writing Tips

Okay, this is the guide to getting a perfect 800 on the Writing portion of the SAT. These simple but easy SAT writing guide will put you well on your way to getting that perfect SAT writing score that you want.

1. First and most importantly you must write an essay with a score of an 11 or 12. The essay is the first part of the test and is about 1/3 of your Writing SAT score. How do you do this? First of all ignore the SAT writing rubric that the collegeboard provides. This rubric is highly inaccurate because it does not take into account that the graders do not follow it word for word. For example, it says perfect score essays must have near perfect grammar; however, I have seen numerous 12 essays with grammatical mistakes. So how do you do well with ignoring the guideline? These are tips that will really help you get that perfect essay.

a. Your essay should be a full 2 pages. Studies have shown that longer essays receive higher scores. (Generally above 10) This does not mean you can write fluff
b. Have a solid and direct thesis
c. Have a conclusion that brings your essay together
d. Include three relevant examples in the body of your essay that reinforce and prove your thesis statement

2. For the grammar questions there are some simple rules that can help you improve your score

a. In the fist 11 grammar questions of the long writing section, the shortest answer tends to be the right one about 50% of the time
b. However, this is not always the case, so use and trust your basic grammar instincts
c. In the sentence error, sections make sure that tenses, and nouns, and pronouns, and verbs match up with their counterparts. This can guarantee you 75% of these questions. For the rest, use your intuition.
d. For the paragraph sections look for the simplest ways to change the sentences and follow the standards the SAT likes to use

3. Practice! Practice! Practice! The best way to study for the 800 is to take numerous practice tests

So that’s the basic SAT Writing Guide to Getting a perfect SAT writing score. Good Luck!!!

Burning A Downloadable Audio Book To CD

You can only burn (or copy/write) a downloadable audio book to a CD if either it is for your own use, or you have copyright over the contents.

Any audio book purchased for your own entertainment or enjoyment is normally subject to copyright and cannot be copied other than for your own use. Violating this law can get you into serious copyright infringement problems and potentially subject to very substantial fines or even imprisonment.

Downloadable audio books are still under copyright, even after paying to download them.

The only instance where audio books (or other publications) are no longer under copyright is when the authors or translators have died over 70 years ago. There are also certain publications by government that are not under copyright.

The rule of “only for personal use” is however still ultimate when it comes to burning any downloadable audio book to CD or any other such formats.

There are even a small number of audio book publishers that won’t allow their audio books to be copied to CD. Audio book publishers can and sometimes do disable the ability to burn the files to CD.

Be sure that your audio book publishers allow copying for personal use: do check it out before going ahead to buy.

Some audio books last for several hours so if you wish to burning your audio books to CD, you will often need more than one CD per audio book. For example, an audio book of about 10 hours can take as many as 7 CDs.

That being said below are the steps you need to take to burn (or copy) any downloadable audio book into CD:

NOTE: The below instructions are based on Windows Media Player Version 10. If you are using an older version, you can download the latest version from Microsoft’s website. Here’s the exact link -

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download

First, the computer you want to use to burn the audio book to CD must be equipped with a recordable CD drive and CD-burning software.

It is this CD-burning software that burns the audio book to the CD using the recordable CD drive.

Second, play the audio book on Windows Media Player. Ensure that you choose “Full Mode” when doing this, not “Skin Mode”.

Third, you will notice the “now playing” information displayed on the right-hand side of your Windows Media Player. If it isn’t displayed, you should click the “Restore the Video and Visualization Pane” button to display it.

Fourth, you can now click the “Library” tab. You will notice the “Start Burn” button displayed.

Fifth, at this point, insert the blank CD into the recordable CD drive.

Sixth, click the “Start Burn” button. Your Windows Media Player will begin burning the audio book to the CD you have inserted.

Lastly, if the audio book is larger than the CD (most always are), Windows Media Player will prompt you that it requires a new CD. You can remove the one inside and insert another blank CD.

When the entire burning process is finished, it will display the status as “Complete”.

Take your newly copied and try it in your CD player. Then you can play it in your car CD player when on your way to work or, more likely, when sat in traffic. Or, in your portable CD player where ever you are. You can even download it to your iPod (you can download it to your MP3 player without having to burn it to a CD first). You are then free to enjoy you audio book wherever you choose.

PostHeaderIcon Sat Under Observation: Test Format, Sat Study Plan, And Strategies

Sat Under Observation: Test Format, Sat Study Plan, And Strategies

SAT is an interesting and impartial test. Another thing less known about the SAT test is that it does not reflect the sum total of a student’s academic skills. Rather, it’s a platform that tests students on the basis of their reasoning skills. The SAT score is not the only thing that you need to get admission in a good college- past academics, recommendations and extracurricular activities are also important. However, most reputed institutions consider the SAT scores for admissions.

The SAT test format

There are three main sections in the SAT- Math, Critical Reading and Writing. These sections are further subdivided into eight sections with questions on reading comprehension, grammar, arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. A 25-minute essay is also required to be completed. The essay section appears first on the SAT. Including breaks, the SAT becomes a four hour and ten minute test. It is therefore important to get a good night’s sleep on the night before the SAT test day.

SAT Test Preparation

SAT, being a standardized test, requires a systematic study plan. No one book can guarantee you a good SAT score. Therefore, you should familiarize yourself with the test through SAT practice tests. By taking a number of SAT practice tests, you can develop a better idea of the test pattern, difficulty level, and time management. The SAT test is designed keeping in mind an average high school senior. This is the reason why topics such as trigonometry, advanced geometry, calculus and higher level math functions do not appear on the test.

Test preparation should begin with revising the concepts that you would have studied in high school. Next in line are untimed SAT practice tests. Finally, you should start solving timed SAT practice tests. Attempt easy questions first and then move on to difficult questions.  If you are stuck with a question, skip it. Move to the next question. Hours of study and solving SAT practice tests could help you develop a winning approach for the SAT test.

Learning Center, Private Tutor or Online Assistance

To choose from these, parental involvement is a must. Let your parents decide whether they can afford the fee structure of these tutoring methods. A learning center, for instance, might charge a few thousand dollars for SAT test preparation. A private tutor, on the other hand, would charge less, but might not be available as per your convenience.

Cost Incurred in case of Learning Center: test prep fee, commuting costs, commuting time
Cost Incurred in case of Private Tutor: Tutoring fee, commuting cost and time (if not a home tutor)
Cost incurred in Online Tutoring: Tutoring fee

Before choosing a SAT test preparation institute or tutor you should look into four things- teaching methodology, syllabus, cost and convenience

Prepping for the SAT calls for a well laid study plan that incorporates all aspects of the SAT- concepts, vocabulary, grammar, elimination, guessing, and reasoning. It is good to start early. Consistent study is crucial to cracking the SAT. Burning the midnight oil is not necessary. Cramming a week before the D-day is not suggested.

The Author brings over 6 years of e-learning and online tutoring experience. Having a deep understanding of pedagogy and child psychology, the writer has developed numerous strategies to improve e-learning and online tutoring for Grades K-12 and higher through various techniques that question the conventional ways of instructing.

PostHeaderIcon Things To Keep In Mind While Preparing For The Sat Exam

Things To Keep In Mind While Preparing For The Sat Exam

Our assumption, at the start of this discussion, is that you are preparing for the SAT exam. In all likelihood, you are considering enrolling for college, and you have been informed that your SAT score is one of the (main) things that will be looked at, in determining whether or not to admit you to college. So, in a bid to improve your SAT scores, and thence increase your chances of gaining admission into the best colleges, you are now proactively preparing for the exam.

That being the case, there are a number of things you need to keep in mind, whilst in the course of your SAT exam preparation:

- The SAT tests a specific skill set: it is up to you to research and find out what that specific skill set it. What we can say, in general terms, is that the SAT exam is all about checking out your critical reasoning capabilities. There are papers for math, comprehension/critical reading as well as writing, but what the examiners are really checking out, through all that, is your ability to think critically in fluid situations. That is the skill you need to build if you are to ace the SAT (and if, by extension, you are to subsequently succeed in college).

- Your confidence, as you approach the SAT exam, matters: often, what makes the difference between students who score highly on the SAT and those who basically flunk is not just their innate abilities, but also the confidence with which they approach the exam. So how do you build confidence? Well, one way would be by building the relevant skills and then practicing on past SAT questions, so much that you eventually build in yourself the idea and strong belief that you can easily attain a decent SAT score at any time. If there is somewhere the adage that ‘practice makes perfect’ applies unerringly, it would be in this sort of thing.

- Shock on first encountering your SAT exam questions can hurt your score: the way to avoid such shock would be by checking out past (but contemporary) SATs. In doing this, you would be trying to see what format they employ, what questions they involve, what the expected answers (and manner of answering the questions is), and so on. You may even take these past SAT exams in conditions that simulate the real test situation, so that when the time for you to do the real exam comes, it turn out to be something you are completely used to.

- Expert guidance can significantly increase your SAT score: there is a group of educationists who have come up offering ‘SAT guidance’ as a service. Their help, provided the ones you work with turn out to be genuine experts, can make a great difference in terms of what you attain, as a SAT score. Of course, as in any consultation, what will make the difference is not just knowledge of the ‘SAT-acing method’ your chosen expert shows you, but its implementation and proper practice in the period leading to, and during the actual SAT.

In our world today we always seem to be busy. Finding time to relax with a good book is getting harder and harder. Audio Books are a great way to make some of the more mundane tasks of your day more enjoyable.

How many times have you been driving and had to turn your radio off or at least right down so you would not have to listen to a song you hate? Other times you just want something different. Listening to a new novel by your favorite author is will make sitting in traffic much easier to bear.

For those of you who use public transport, reading could be difficult sometimes. I know myself that reading whilst in motion often made be dizzy and this is a common complaint or trying to hold a book whilst be jostled by other commuters, poor lighting and jerking motions of bus or train also made concentration an almost impossible task. Listening to an audio book on a plane is a wonderful way to relax, just put your headphones on, recline your seat, close your eyes and listen whilst the speaker takes you on another journey.

Maybe you are one of those people who want to read but can’t find the time, when asked by a friend have you read a certain book have you heard yourself replying “When would I have time to read?” or have you sat down to read only to find yourself looking at the windows which badly needed cleaning or remembering you have to pick up the dry cleaning. Imagine listen to those books whilst you cooked the dinner, exercised on the treadmill, vacuumed the living room, etc.

These audios are also a great way of encouraging the children to open their minds with books to suit all age groups in many fiction genres including animal, adventure, mystery and comedy etc. There are also educational books on history, geography, etc., which can stimulate the inquiring mind.

Adults can enjoy novels of all genres, nonfiction on a multitude of topics and adult educational themes including interesting topics for today such as our changing environment, news items, politic, basically anything that takes your interest or full tutorials on selected topics. All of these books can be obtained in many different languages. Audio books can be borrowed from your local library, bought at large book stores and some music shops. A search of the internet will give you unlimited suppliers of these books and links to sites where you can download instantly. Audio books can be used in your car CD player, mp3s or downloaded from the internet to your iPod.

Whether you listen to general nonfiction, educational material or a fiction novel of your choice you will have found a wonderful way of using your time not only efficiently but also turning the boring parts of your day into a more enjoyable times. Audio books are becoming more widely used so when you see the person sitting next to you smiling it could be they enjoying a great story.

Sat Secrets Revealed: Get 2200+ On The Sat

Is your SAT test preparation program providing you with strategies to get a 2200-plus score on the SAT? There is no substitute for hard work. But in addition to working hard, you need to work in the right direction. Strategies for SAT test preparation would be of no use if you do not implement them while writing SAT practice tests, or just solving some SAT pre test questions. Most SAT test takers aim for the 2200 mark. A SAT exam score that’s even close to 2200 is possible. And you do not need an Einstein-like intelligence to achieve that. Here are a few strategies that I find important for crossing the 2200 score on the SAT test. All these strategies help you guess smartly while saving time and preventing you from making silly mistakes.

Knowing the Test Directions beforehand

The directions on the SAT are always the same. It would be a great idea to know them from the moment you start your SAT test preparation program. This will save you time when you take the actual SAT. Let me clarify this with an example. The SAT test paper would have three main sections further divided into few subsections, making a total of eight. Now, if you spend even one minute reading the directions of each of the eight sections, you end up being eight minutes short of the total allotted time. By knowing the directions in advance, however, you could have utilized those eight minutes into solving SAT problems.

Do not be the sheep

Most SAT test preparation programs would tell you to answer the questions in order. This is totally absurd. Most scorers know the fact that moving through the test efficiently, not necessarily in the order of questions, is the key to scoring high on the SAT. If you cannot answer a question in one minute, skip the question- no need to challenge your ego there. This is because the SAT does not differentiate in terms of awarding points between easy questions and hard questions. If you feel a particular question could be solved in the next attempt, you should circle the question and move on. Circling would help you locate those questions easily.

Guessing: Forbidden or Forgotten

There is no strategy more debatable than guessing. Most people would ask you to never guess an answer. What they do not understand that guessing is a strategy, which if properly implemented, can maximize your SAT score. The SAT does not penalize you for guessing. Does it? By eliminating one or more than one answer that shouts out loud it’s incorrect you can turn the odds in your favor.

Let me explain this scenario. The SAT deducts a quarter point (1/4) for an incorrect answer. The fraction points that a student loses on the SAT actually compensate for the points that could have been won through random guessing. You should be able to eliminate one or two wrong answer choices on most SAT problems.

There are some more strategies that I would cover in the next few articles. Stay posted for some expert advice and SAT test preparation strategies.
