PostHeaderIcon How to Prepare for the College Entrance SAT

How to Prepare for the College Entrance SAT

Many people are afraid of the dreaded SAT, the longest, most comprehensive test most high school students will ever take. If they do poorly, they fear they will never be able to go to college.

Although the test scores are a very bad judge of your actual intelligence or ability to succeed in life, your SAT scores unfortunately have a disproportionate impact on your college options. The good news is that it is easy for which to prepare.

Most colleges take your SAT scores into consideration. Many indicate that they will not accept students who score below a certain level on the test. Colleges know that it is not a measure of your I.Q. or a real measure of how likely you are to succeed; however it is a measure of the level of one’s discipline to study and, frankly, an easy screening method for applicants.

It takes a lot of preparation time to review all the material that will be on the SAT and, most importantly, to familiarize yourself with the way the test is given. If you don’t understand the format, the test can be very confusing and intimidating. Below is a list of steps you can take to prepare for the SAT.

1. Take practice SAT’s

There is no better preparation than taking practice SAT’s and carefully reviewing your mistakes. You can find practice tests at book stores and online. For every time you take a practice test, your goal should be for your test score to improve by several points.

2. Brush up on Old Math

Much of the math on the SAT is from earlier level high school material, so even if you’re good at math, you might not remember it. You need to re-read your old geometry and algebra books to do well in this section of the test.

3. Practice Your Vocabulary

Most of the verbal section of the SAT is based on vocabulary. The SAT frequently presents unusual words that sound like simpler words but have different meanings. If you have a limited vocabulary, it is very hard to expand it in a matter of weeks, but it can be helpful to try.

4. Become a Writer

Writing is a skill that only gets better with practice. Try writing a few SAT-style essays every day and you will soon be able to do them quickly and without being nervous.

5. Be Well Rested and Fed

Make sure you get a lot of sleep the night before the test. In the morning, eat a huge breakfast of something that won’t bother your stomach. Definitely get to the test location with plenty of time to spare.

6. Don’t Guess

If you read a multiple choice question on the SAT and have no idea of the answer and are unable to eliminate any of the choices as incorrect answers, your odds of guessing and getting it right are low. You are better off skipping the question altogether. Skipping a question will negatively impact your score less than getting the answer wrong.

Having said that, if you have a multiple choice question and are able to narrow down the correct answer between one choice or another, that would be worth making an educated guess since then your odds are much better at getting it correct.

The SAT is a long, dull test, so don’t be nervous. Also, try to take the SAT early so you have time to take it again if you are not happy with your score. Regardless how many times you take the SAT, colleges accept your highest score for their consideration of admittance to their school.

Get Into That Dream School with a Great SAT Test Preparation Course

Most colleges and universities in the United States accept the SAT as a primary means of evaluating an applicant’s potential. Performance on this particular test also influences universities’ decisions regarding the conferral of merit-based scholarships or fellowships. In short, the SAT is one of the most important tests of a high school student’s life. As a result, SAT preparation is crucial for success in the college application process. Without a decent score, an applicant can forget about getting into his or her dream school. That is why SAT test preparation is so important. Without the guidance of a good SAT prep course, a student has a greater chance of doing poorly. Because of a poor score, the student might not get a scholarship, which could help him pay for a large portion of his education. These scholarships are becoming more crucial to students as higher education expenses continue to rise. Many SAT test preparation courses are available, but a student must take great care in choosing one that has earned an excellent reputation. Sometimes, spending a few extra dollars for a great course can mean the difference of several hundred points on a student’s SAT score. Students who want to earn a degree from one of the country’s best colleges or universities should make sure that they take an SAT prep course. The right SAT course gives students a greater sense of what to expect on the big day of the test. Ultimately, practicing for that very important test through some means of SAT preparation helps boost students’ confidence levels and test performance. Overall, taking a preparation course prevents students from getting blindsided on the day of the test. Instead of entering a testing center with no idea as to what the test structure is like, students with a great deal of test preparation will score higher than those who did not prepare. As a result, students who take a prep course for the SAT are much more likely to achieve their ultimate goal: earning a degree from the school of their dreams.

PostHeaderIcon Startling Confession By a College Planner – SAT Tutor Scams and Rip-offs

Startling Confession By a College Planner – SAT Tutor Scams and Rip-offs

Earlier this month I traveled to New York because I’m opening a branch office there.  I had occasion to speak to two successful SAT tutors/instructors about a variety of subjects related to the SAT, the College Board (who administers the SAT) and parents.  I thought I’d share some of that info in this article.

First, if you or your child is a Junior or going to be a Junior and not taking at least at online SAT course, you’re behind the eight ball.  Here’s why.

Assuming you live in an affluent or upper-middle class area, your SAT (and ACT) scores are graded differently than if you lived in a less desirable neighborhood.  How?

Because college admissions officers will assume that you’ve prepared for the test because you’re likely to have enrolled in an SAT prep course – like Kaplan or Princeton Review -  or hired a tutor. Even if you haven’t!

In other words, kids from less affluent areas who don’t score as highly may have their scores “grossed up” to be on par with students likely to have taken SAT preparation classes.

So an inner city student who cracks 1100 could be as impressive as a high schooler from Long Island with a 1400.

Now, say what you will about the SAT and other standardized tests – the fact remains that they are critically important to admissions officers – even though they’re flawed.

The next thing I learned is how much money parents in affluent areas will devote to college prep. Granted, Long Island is not exactly Boise, but it is similar to pockets of Miami, Boca Raton, Newton, Mass. (my hometown), the North side of Chicago, parts of L.A. and other affluent areas around the country.

So I’m sure there are thousands of families shelling out ,000-,000 just on SAT prep!  One private tutoring company charges close to ,000 to sign up, then 0-plus each session. And the sessions are generally weekly – so it’s easy to drop 0 per month for several months!

Do they get value for that kind of money?

Of course the answer is “it depends.”

I believe that the tutors that College Pete and I recommend are all top-quality, results-driven educators.

But the other half of the equation is that no tutor can get blood from a stone – if the student doesn’t follow the plan, it doesn’t matter how much Mommy or Daddy spent on test prep.

Which brings me to my third point – its seems that the kids whose parents were shelling out the upper end of the spectrum in tutoring fees tended to be highly motivated.  In other words, they respected the investment their parents made and were forced to be accountable by their instructors.

So that bolsters the argument that you ‘get what you pay for.’

If you’re looking to hire an SAT tutor, here are a few questions you should ask, especially if they charge a high fee.

What is your philosophy?  Meaning, are you the same as all the other options, like Sylvan, Kaplan or Princeton Review or do you do things differently?
What characteristics do your most successful students share?  In other words, what are you looking for in a potential student?
Who does the instructing?  How is he or she trained or qualified?
Why would a student be unhappy with his or her results after you work with him/her?  Give examples of students or parents who were not pleased with your services and cite reasons why.
Do you offer any type of guarantee? Why or why not?

Then, go with your gut feel.  If you received reasonable answers to the above questions, use your instincts to make a decision.  Then get your little student crackin’!

Andy Lockwood and Peter “College Pete” Ratzan are certified college funding experts.  They counsel hundreds of students and their families on how to pay for college, and how to get into a top college that will be suitable and train them for a fulfilling, and lucrative, career!  For more free tips on how to “smoke” the SAT, visit:  www.SmokeTheSAT.com.

Crack The New Sat Test: Simple Strategies Great Results

The score reporting policy of College Board makes it important for SAT applicants to work on new techniques to get decent SAT scores.

Three factors are involved in college admissions- Academic record, personal records and standardized test scores. While the first two factors require years of consistent hard work, the last factor asks for smart prepping.

Though the SAT test is really not a very complicated test, the hype surrounding it makes students taking the test nervous. Therefore, it would not be a bad idea after all to follow proven strategies to crack the SAT with ease.

Start Early

Students should take the PSAT to acquaint them with the SAT test. It would be a smart move to take the PSAT in the sophomore year. Visit the website of College Board to see the test dates.  Chalking out a plan for SAT test preparation a year in advance can help fetch high SAT scores. Students should make sure that the SAT test date does not clash with their midterms or baseball championship.

Time Management

The SAT does not judge you on your strengths; it equally keeps an eye on your weaknesses. That is why it consists of three sections with questions of various levels of difficulty. Even the simplest question in the SAT can be tricky at times. Plan your study schedule in such a way that all the sections of the SAT are dealt with properly.

Analyze your Weak Areas

Some students are good at math, while others struggle with the Reading Comprehension or vocabulary. It is important to build on your strengths while eliminating your weaknesses. You can take free SAT practice tests and analyze your scores to find out which areas require more efforts.

Diligence

Parents and teacher s might have told you on numerous occasions- There is no substitute for hard work. The bad news is that they are right. Hard work really pays. I, however, believe in smart work. What I mean is that you should spend your time in such a way that you get the most out of it. Sitting for hours and not focusing on the test paper is certainly not going to help you fetch good SAT scores.

Keeping a Notebook

In my teaching experience, I have seen that students who note down important formulas (for Math) and important words (for English) in a notebook perform better than those who rely only on their memory. What I mean to say is that you should jot down all necessary math formulas and word meanings so that you can go through it and cover the entire syllabus of the Sat before the D-day.

I must unveil a secret about the SAT test. Hold your breath. Here is the secret that most test preparation institutes hide from you- SAT is not a complex test; it’s a simple test designed to access your reasoning skills. And as the saying goes “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”, the hype pertaining to the SAT has created a monster-like image of the test in our minds!

The Author brings over 6 years of e-learning and online tutoring experience. Having a deep understanding of pedagogy and child psychology, the writer has developed numerous strategies to improve e-learning and online tutoring for Grades K-12 and higher through various techniques that question the conventional ways of instructing.

So, the january SAT scores are out! I took my test January 23rd @ Robinson. Here is the College Board site: www.collegeboard.com This is a link that shows how VA seniors did (Look at page 5) professionals.collegeboard.com Info on the reduced price lunch waiver : sat.collegeboard.com

Sat Nav Devices

Many people rely on their sat navs to get them to where they want to be and have come to rely on them a great deal, perhaps a little too much. We’ve all heard the stories, the man who followed his sat nav into a lake, the woman who was led onto a train track and the German who was led into a toilet, well maybe that was a one-off, but people have become very dependant on their sat nav and they have become a way of life for many. There are many sat navs available on the market but finding the best one, or the one that’s best for you may seem a bit of a task when you look at how many there are to choose from. The sat navs available all do the same job but there are some that do it better than others. The Garmin Nuvi 660 features integrated Bluetooth which allows you to make and receive hands-free calls, a real benefit in the car and any in-coming calls that you receive whilst driving will automatically mute the voice-guided directions. Other options that this sat nav has are the abilities to send text messages and also to synchronise your sat nav to your phone’s address book which you can choose to connect to via dialling or by voice recognition. The only thing you will need to check out for is whether or not your phone is supported as not all are, but you can find a list of all compatible mobile phones on the Garmin website. This is a Garmin Nuvi sat nav that is WAAS – enabled (wide area augmentation system for better position accuracy) and comes preloaded with maps of all of Europe. The GPS on this unit comes with all of the usual features and abilities that you would expect a GPS to have today and a few extras as well. The 660 includes; voice-guided directions, automatic rerouting, turn-by-turn text and also a text to voice functionality that enables the device to actually speak the names of specific roads as well. The Garmin Nuvi 660 is able to find the fastest route, the route with the shortest distance or off road and if you would like to stop getting lost when you’re on foot as well as in the car then the 660 can help you out there as well as it also has the ability to be used by pedestrians, cyclists, lorry drivers or even on the bus.

There are many sat navs available that all basically do the same job but there are some that do the job better. The Garmin Nuvi sat nav can be hooked up to your mobile phone via Bluetooth and this sat nav can then sync to your phone’s address book. This is a Garmin Nuvi sat nav that is WAAS – enabled. This stands for; wide area augmentation system and it means that the device will have better position accuracy. This unit also comes preloaded with maps of all of Europe.

Get a Higher Test Score with an SAT Test Prep Course

For years, opponents of the SAT have argued that it is culturally biased and that it does not accurately evaluate a student’s overall knowledge and level of intelligence. Adjusting to meet the diverse needs of high school students across the United States, the SAT’s format has changed over time. As a result, finding an SAT test prep course that has also evolved with these changes is now crucial for the college applicant. Regardless of the controversy surrounding it, the SAT is an important part of a student’s application. Admissions committees throughout the United States use SAT scores to measure a student’s academic potential. Doing poorly on this very important test could spell disaster for even the best high school students. That is why serious students across the United States spend a little extra money on a good SAT prep course. Because of the test’s importance, students who want to gain admittance to the best schools often take advantage of a reputable SAT prep course. Students who complete the best SAT test prep courses will often score much higher on the test than students who simply studied on their own. That difference could be a few hundred points, which could decide whether or not a promising student earns a scholarship to her top school. Many times, high school students are involved in many activities and do not have the time to attend formal SAT preparation classes. An SAT online course is a convenient way for these students to prepare for the big day. Instead of having to worry about squeezing in formal lessons at some faraway location, a student can choose to take an SAT online course that will ultimately allow him to prepare in his own time. Overall, SAT courses allow a student to take a more active role in test preparation. As a result, the student that participates in prep classes is far more likely to get the score that he needs to start his education in his school of choice.

by avlxyz

Why should you take the SAT Test?

The SAT Test finds its roots back to the early 1940’s when Henry Chauncey, an assistant dean at Harvard, convinced the College Board into using the Sat as a uniform test. Since then this exam has had numerous changes. Interestingly this exam, during its early years, aimed at eliminating bias between applicants belonging to different social and economic backgrounds.

Today, however, the scenario is quite different. On an average, over two million US students, and thousands of students from different parts of the world take the SAT to seek admission in the top notch colleges in the US. While college admission is the most important reasons for students writing the SAT, there are some rather uncommon grounds for applicants to take this examination. Let us explore them.

The SAT Ghost

College is not the only place that you should aim for. Life does not end after college. After graduation, when you apply for a job, your learning experience and qualifications would come handy. When you prepare your resume or curriculum vitae, you would surely like to add professional certifications and industry expertise. It might surprise you but more and more employers are showing interest in the SAT scores of the applicants. Why? The reason is simple- SAT scores measure your reasoning ability as well your intelligence. Therefore, you should take the SAT not only to get admission in the desired institution, but also to impress your potential employer in future. In other words, the SAT Ghost is going to haunt you even after college!

Save Money

In almost every college, students come from two major families in terms of financial background. The first type of family can afford the rising college fees. The second family-type, however, does not have the resources to pay for the annual fee of the top institutions. With a solid test preparation you can get decent scholarships, and thus save your parents from unnecessary financial burden. Even if you belong to a rich family, it would not hurt to save your family a few thousand bucks. Isn’t it?

Test preparation for the SAT Test is generally expensive. Most institutes charge thousands of dollars for this. However, with help of an online math or online English tutor, you can crack the test with ease without having to spend a lot of money. You can find the right online tutoring company to help you prepare for the SAT Reasoning Test. A good tutoring organization would offer some Free SAT Practice Tests and SAT Test Practice Questions.

Get the Right Exposure

There is a famous English proverb that says “A person is known by the company he keeps”. If you get good scores in the SAT reasoning test, you would get admission in one of the top colleges.
