SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review.
It is a proven method to grind textbook analysis skills. In college,
you’ll often be assigned multiple chapters for several unique courses in books
that can be quite complicated. SQ3R helps get on to understanding purposeful and meaningful,
so that you work your time most effectively. Here’s how this strategy works.

Survey

Catch an plan of what the stage is more or less by reviewing the highlights:

* Read the title, headings, and subheadings.

* Write down all lexis that are italicized or bold.

* Look at charts, graphs, pictures, maps, and other visual material.

* Read captions.

* Read the very start and finish of the division.

Question

As you survey the text, ask a question in place of each one section.
Ask what, why, how, at what time, who and wherever questions as they relate to the content.
Here’s how you can create questions:

* bend the title, headings, or subheadings into questions.

* Rewrite the questions at the ending of the chapter or after every subheading in your own vocabulary.

Write down your questions. Questions help you pay attention, understand the text better,
and recall the information more easily later on.

Read

Read one section of a period at a time, actively looking for an answer to your question for that section.
Give attention to bold and italicized lexis that authors benefit from to make important points.
Be certain to review everything in the section, plus tables, graphs, and illustrations,

As these features can communicate an concept more powerfully than printed text.

Recite

At the end of each section, look up from the text and in your own expressions recite an answer to your question for that section.
Then note down your answer. Be certain to provide examples that support it.

Now recap the Question, Read, and Recite steps for each section of the chapter or assigned reading.
To start with ask a question for the next section. At that time read to find the answer. To finish, recite the answer
in your own words and jot it down. The on paper questions and answers will help you study in the future.

Review

Next completing each subdivision or reading assignment, review your remarks. Identify the most important points
of the reading by looking for the most crucial idea in each section. Recite, or write down, a brief summary of the section or assignment.

Look your study notes every week to help you remember the information. When it’s time to study for your tests,
you’ll find you’ve created an invaluable guide.

You will receive the My SAT Online Score Report for free when you sign up for the SAT, and all you are going to need is an online College Board account. You are still going to receive your printed SAT score report in the mail, but the online score report shows you more about how you performed on each section. The online report gives you the level of difficulty, the type of question, and how many questions you answered correctly, incorrectly, or omitted in each group.

The online score report shows how your scores compare to the scores in your school, state, and the nation, to understand specifics about how the test is structured and scored, and view a printable copy of your actual essay response. You are also given a detailed insight into how you did on each section of the test, search for colleges, majors, and careers based on your score, and work on improving your score for retaking the test in the future.

The final thing you can do is choose to pay an additional fee to send your scores to more colleges and scholarship programs than the ones you have chosen for free.

How to Get a Really Great Score on the SAT and ACT

What You Need to Know
The difference between a student’s being accepted or rejected into their favorite universities is becoming increasingly thin. Often, all it takes is a few points’ higher grade average, or another 80 points on the SAT, to make your children’s chosen future a reality.

Of course, the opposite is true as well, and those 80 or so points that he or she doesn’t get can be their worst nightmare, and change their future altogether.

No parent wants to see his or her child’s heart crushed like that. But thankfully, there’s something you can do about it.

The way I’ve found is best to do that is with SAT and ACT private tutoring. Not only can you select the type of tutor you want (even give a specific name, if you know one), but you can be there in the home to encourage your child and ensure he or she does the preparation necessary for success. It can even be a bonding expenience.

My Recommendation
The tutoring service I recommend is one that’s been around for decades. You may have heard of it: Kaplan Tutoring.

Having been a tutor myself, who has seen SAT scores go up by 50% (yes, really!), I can say that Kaplan’s tutoring service really is the best way to go. The amount of professional, back-office support and assistance you get, on top of the reasonable prices and excellent tutors, makes it a winner.

Sure, classes may be cheaper, but they force your child to learn at a higher or lower level of learning than fits him or her. She’ll either surrounded by people who learn much faster than you…or much slower than her. And that’s just frustrating either way.

Top top it off, rushing to classes, when one’s got a million other things to do his or her junior and senior years, is NOT fun.

But studies show that students who get private tutoring, no surprise, see a much bigger jump in their SAT scores than classroom-taught students. It’s no surprise, really. Compare personalized service, scheduled around your needs and your busy timetable, to rushing 3 nights a week to classes you don’t have time for, or reading out of a boring SAT book you don’t have the patience for.

Really, it’s no comparison.

Kaplan tutoring sessions last only 1.5 or 2 hours, rather than the long and boring 3 hours of a typical SAT class. And as a parent, you can chart your child’s progress with regular updates from your tutor, including regular diagnostic reports from the Kaplan Tutoring office. Not only that, buy you have a choice in selecting your tutoring, unlike with the classes. And if you’re not happy with the tutor you get, you can always request a new one, for no extra charge.

It’s that flexibility and attention to detail that makes Kaplan Tutoring a winner. I’ve seen firsthand the difference it’s made in childrens’ lives, and sometimes it can be downright emotional receiving a phone call from a student saying he got the score he needed to get into that dream university!

What To Do Next

A Good Attitude Should be Part of Your GMAT or SAT Prep

There are all sorts of test preparation services that you can invest in if you are taking the SAT or GMAT.  There are SAT prep courses that students can take, and tutors that can help provide insight into all the components of this challenging exam.  There is GMAT practice test software that includes practice questions, practice tests, score tracking systems and even timed tests that simulate the real thing.  One of the most important things you can do to prepare for these tests, however, is learning about the right attitude to have on and before test day.

Whether you are taking one of these SAT prep classes or studying from GMAT prep software, it’s important to have a good attitude throughout the whole experience.  Although a good attitude won’t make you smarter or inject more information into your brain, it will reduce stress.  Since stress makes you less efficient, makes it harder to study and makes it easier to make careless mistakes on test day, learning to retain a positive attitude is crucial.  It should be just as important as investing in other test preparation services to earn a higher score.

Many people suggest looking at the SAT or GMAT as a game, which is definitely a good attitude to take.  SAT and GMAT questions are actually a lot like doing puzzle games, just like the ones that were on your placemat in fast food restaurants when you were a kid. They are just on a higher level that should be compatible with your current level of education.  And if you are competitive, think of it as a sport.  Taking a GMAT practice test is just like practicing your swing to do better in the game of baseball or practicing to become a better kicker in a game of soccer or football. 

These tips are especially important on the actual day of the test.  When the questions get really hard, you can consider them a move in a sport or a game of chess, as opposed to a difficult question.  With help from ongoing study and investment in some sort of test preparation services, this sort of attitude will ensure a winning score on test day.
